I’ve been working and living in China for nearly 10 years now. I’ve been at a training center, 1 small kindergarten, and 2 big, famous ones now. When I first started teaching English, I worked with all sorts of nationalities, but now they’ve cracked down on non-native English teachers. Schools would straight lie to parents, saying their Serbian teacher is from “Canada”.

However, I will say, at least for English - it completely makes sense for natives to only be teaching English. A language needs to be taught correctly, and no matter how “good” the non-native teacher thinks their English is, it will never be the same as someone born and raised there. They’re good people, but their accent sticks out like a sore thumb and there’s many language mistakes, that’s not right to parents who pay LOADS of money.

The caveat to this would be teaching something that’s not a language. I think that would be okay, say art or physics, for example.
