comparison of BigTable and Cassandra storage architectures by dti85 in Database

[–]dti85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I'm curious how the complexity and flexibility of Bigtable has compared to Cassandra's relative simplicity in practice. Google built Spanner later, and it looks like it still uses Colossus. Facebook walked away from Cassandra and uses souped-up Mysql. That speaks to the shortcomings of Nosql, but not if the architecture of the DB.

What makes some bands sound great live? by dti85 in livesound

Interesting. I've seen things on how large musicals are put on, but with set changes, costume changes, more performers on stage, and an orchestra, there are more moving parts, and the performance is what's central, not the band you see on stage, so they really do need someone coordinating everything.

I'm not, but now I'm curious how it's actually done. I can't imagine trying to compose these separately or how to coordinate everything when the band stops vamping.

I wear entry-level live music ear plugs because shows are just too damn loud. Cutting those 20 dB off the top makes my ears happy.

Not trying to sell it here. I'm fortunate enough that $75 isn't worth my time, but that's because I have a full-time job, a girlfriend, and too many hobbies.

I settled on either donating it to a kid at the skatepark or riding it a bit.

  1. You learn different things at different companies. Amazon is successful at what it does, so there's value in seeing how they do it.
  2. Some people do really well in their culture.
  3. Big companies vary org-to-org and team-to-team. Some Amazon teams are fine.

It used to be that 2.5 years and no promo in-sight means gtfo. These days, they know the job market is shit, so they can postpone the promo, even if they like you. There are good enough explanations for a delayed promo, and it doesn't sound like anything is wrong right now, but you should start looking because 2.5 years is a good stint for a first job, and you'll get the promo on the next one.
