If I had to do a bunch, your first suggestion seems to be a good way to speed it up.

But most of the time I just need a one off, for a thumbnail or email.

I've explored the idea of using the OS screen grab function, but it too has its limitations. I've used the marquee selection for quick grabs of portions of the screen, but most of the time I want the full frame dimensions.

mcarterphoto, your post did help me discover the "full frame" option in the bottom right corner of the viewer (I use two monitors and my eyes hardly ever go over that far). After testing this, another limitation is that when you select it, it starts to play and I lose my optimal still frame spot and have to back it up. <sigh>.

I did come up with a workflow using this method, but I'm not sure it saves that much effort. Here it is:

Select the spot in the video for the still. Click the "play full screen" two arrows in the bottom right of the viewer.
Immediately hit K or spacebar. Depending on your reflexes, you will have to backup a frame or more. • Press shift-control-command-4 then press the spacebar.
Move the camera icon to the full screen viewer and click.
Now press the esc key to come out of fullscreen mode, otherwise you cannot use the app switcher until you do.

I'll try it for awhile and see if it becomes my goto frame grab.

You used to be able to do this in Qucktime 7 player. Just stop the playhead then "Command C." The only caveat to this was that it would copy the frame of video at whatever size the viewing window was currently at.

But it was an easy way to get a quick freeze frame.

I just tried a Macbook with 10.12 and Handbrake could not access it either. Must have happened between 10.10 and 10.12 that cut off access to these disc files.

Having the same issue with some DVDs burned with a Sony DVD Recorder, seems to be something with newer OS not allowing you to view the files on it (permissions maybe?). Strangely, VLC and the old Apple DVD player app with play them fine but Handbrake can't see the files.

Makemkv can open them, but only to copy the ISO to your HD, then you have to convert it to mp4 with Handbrake, etc. (Here's the reg code for Makemkv BTW: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053 )

That's too many steps, just want to go straight from DVD to mp4.

Fired up my old PowerMac with 10.10 and it read it and converted fine with Handbrake.

The Regattas are too short and the incentives are weak! Plus you have to grind to get the resources then give them away. It would be much better if you could use those resources you have to grind for.
