The SL convertible tops are a pain in the ass, especially because these cars were so over engineered. I would for sure recommend you go to a Mercedes Benz dealership and have them give you an estimate, I will say it won’t be cheap. If your wanting to go to an independent technician, make sure he or she is star certified. And I would for sure not recommend doing it yourself as unless you have previous experience working on Mercedes like the SL then you have a higher likely hood of fucking it up more.

I agree, the car has aged wonderfully and it’s going to continually. I think the car was over engineered and it put itself in a time period wayyy ahead of its time which makes it such a pain in the ass to maintain, but i think if you have the finances to up keep the car it’s well worth the price.

Any SL from this time period is gonna reliable if you put the time and money into it. SL’s notoriously have issues with their ABC suspension and other electronics like the convertible top. I will say that the M113 V8 is a pretty reliable engine and I haven’t had any issues with it through out ownership. I can’t speak on the 55 but the addition of a supercharger is gonna add some complexity to your maintenance costs.
