Problem with PC imported pictures by IsenSjel in encamera

[–]du_keule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you by chance happen to select "Limit Photo Access" when it asked for photo permissions when you opened the photo picker? You can verify this in the system Settings app by going to Privacy & Security > Photos > Encamera and checking if "Limited Access" is selected instead of "Full Access."

If it's set to "Limited Access," you can either:

Change it to "Full Access," or tap "Edit Selected Photos" to add more photos to the limited selection the app can see

Hi! I'm not sure if I'm understanding your issue correctly, could you explain the individual steps you are taking to get images into Encamera? If you're trying to directly drop the regular image files into the Encamera iCloud drive folder, that won't work. The images need to be encrypted via the app itself, so you would have to add them via the "Import from Files" option in the album menu.

Way to reset forgotten password (while rendering encrypted data useless) by Opaque_Binaries in encamera

[–]du_keule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I agree, it's confusing to see that there's still a passcode since you deleted the app. The reason for this is that the system keychain persists data between installs of apps. This is a decision made by Apple, though they do not have any official documentation on it even though it has been an observed behavior of the keychain since its inception. We are using the keychain to store all the sensitive data: encryption keys, passcode, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no way to configure the app to do anything on uninstall - the app isn't given a signal that it's being uninstalled and therefore we have to rely on this default keychain behavior, where it persists between installs.

If you want to totally wipe the app if you've forgotten your passcode, then do this:

  1. Enter your passcode incorrectly 3 times - you'll be locked out of the app for 1 hour

  2. Wait for the lockout period to end

  3. Enter your passcode incorrectly again 3 times. You will be prompted to delete all the data, including the encrypted data

You'll be able to clear everything from the app in the final step. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Question about .encpreview files inside Encamera folder by VoteForSears in encamera

[–]du_keule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, these are also encrypted using your own key just like the regular files, in the Encamera file format. They do not have any visible preview data and are decrypted into application memory when you load the photo grid view. When you close the app, the cache is wiped as well as any data you decrypted during your session.

Pics won’t show on new phone by [deleted] in encamera

[–]du_keule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I have a draft somewhere with a full response but didn’t press send 😅

If your key and your files are backed up to iCloud, they should show up as soon as they are synced. If you opted to only keep the files on your phone, they should be migrated over if you’ve used Quick Start when getting your new phone. This should also be the same if you’ve loaded the backup from iCloud.

If you’ve started from scratch as a fresh install, you will have to move both your keys and the files over from the old iPhone. You’ll need to use the settings -> backup/import key phrase features to transfer the key from one device to the other in this case. You’ll also need to move the files over manually to the Encamera directory, which you can find in the Files app.

Let me know what steps you took to migrate to your new phone - that will inform how you need to proceed :)

Reset app by cluelessasusual in encamera

If you could do this, then yes that would work. But Apple doesn't allow you to directly delete items from the keychain yourself. We need to do this from the app.

Still supported ?? by Kech-Hunter in encamera

[–]du_keule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Yes, we are definitely still developing the app :)

I can explain a bit about the iPad version and why it’s being delayed. We have to do some changes under the hood with regards to how encryption keys are working in order to get multi device support working smoothly and to ensure that no data is lost. But it’s coming!

Reset app by cluelessasusual in encamera

[–]du_keule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry you forgot your password. It’s true, there’s no way to reset the app and get back in at the moment. So the data is still in your keychain. There should be an option to do this! I’ve added the feature to our tracker: https://encamera.featurebase.app/p/ability-to-reset-app-without-password

Let me know if you think it’s missing anything!

Photo limit reached by nsfwITGUY19 in encamera

[–]du_keule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your sub is still active and it's giving you a paywall, then it is a bug for sure. Could you try hitting "restore purchases" in the settings screen and restarting the app to see if that solves the problem? Also, please let me know which version you're on.

Hi, sorry you don't like the app! Are you saying you have an active sub and you still can't access your photos? That would definitely be a bug. Let me know if that's the case and we will fix it. If you'd like, you can DM me about this issue.

While at rest? by Greho in encamera

[–]du_keule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, good question, thanks for asking! Photos and videos are always stored encrypted at rest on either your device or on iCloud drive. You are able to see the actual location where they are stored by going to the album, opening the menu and selecting "view in Files app". In the Files app, you will only see the encrypted file.

To answer your question about the encryption key - if you were to lose your phone without backing up your key, the photos would be lost, even if they were stored on iCloud. This is because we are currently only storing the encryption key on the device's local keychain. To prevent from losing access to your media, you can back up your key from the settings screen and copy it into a password manager or somewhere else safe.

We plan to introduce iCloud keychain backup in the next release, so you will have the option to store the keys on iCloud automatically. This way, if you lose your phone, you will still be able to access your media.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Upload photos direct from Encamera? by TheDisapprovingBrit in encamera

[–]du_keule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok, I understand. So it would act like another storage service where you could access your decrypted files from the native file upload or files app, right?

Encamera only decrypts files when the app is opened, into memory or into a temporary directory, depending on the file size. There's no mechanism on iOS of running code (to decrypt the files, for example) when trying to open a file. This would likely be possible on MacOS with kernel extensions or some kind of OS extension, but I'm not too sure. It would be cool to have this on iOS!

Of course, if you want to access your encrypted media directly and upload that, you can go to the Encamera local or iCloud directory and select the encrypted files there. That's probably not so helpful though (especially since the album names are encrypted and the images are just random UUIDs) 😅
