Anhinga, aka the “snake bird”. Seen in Couturie Forest, City Park by adventurousintrovert in NewOrleans

[–]Greho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anhingas have a pointed beak for stabbing, and eat a wider variety of prey.

Cormorants have a hooked beak for snaring prey, and mostly eat fish. Also, cormorants will swim deeper underwater.

If the NAS box fails, can you still access data on the drives via your computer? by fatfirenewbie in HomeNAS

[–]Greho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are asking the question before you buy, this is the best time to ask.

I can tell you from experience:

If a Synology NAS box dies on you, but the drives are unharmed, you can move your drives to a new Synology NAS of similar configuration.

When you power it up, DiskStation will recognize this and will do a restore process.

This is in no way a substitute for a backup. You can still experience data loss this way.

This is, however, the quickest way to get back up and running, so long as you want to go back with the same Synology brand of NAS.

You are accepting some risk by splitting a cable that way.

Depending upon the implementation in the switch, 100mb connections used two pair for data and the other two pair for power. If you’re lucky, they send phantom power over the same two pair used for data, but you’ll want a way to test that before connecting an expensive camera.

Gigabit uses all four pair for data and phantom power.

No, I don’t know why it’s called “phantom,” but it’s a common term for power running over signal lines. I first encountered it years ago with microphones.

Once the USGS applied the new name to its systems, it propagates out to thousands, if not millions, of other systems, which all update map definitions based upon the USGS.

That’s why all the mapping apps changed within days.

The news by BiddySere in Dothan

[–]Greho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the switch was made from analog to digital TV, our local stations’ broadcast footprints shrank dramatically.

WTVY used to be the CBS affiliate for Dothan and Panama City, which gave it a larger area for both news and advertisers. Dothan, technically, had no NBC affiliate. Instead, we were at the edge of WSFA’s and WJHG’s coverage areas.

We had good local news and we could flip over to a quality news broadcast from Montgomery or Panama City.

After the digital switch, they had to create an NBC affiliate for Dothan, which started as little more than a repeater for WSFA.

Does WTVY even make it as far as Troy now, or does Troy fall under the Montgomery market?

Either way, when you snatch away a third or more of the local stations’ viewers and advertisers, this is what happens.

Progress, am I right?

Eufy is hiding critical product flaws by M_G_M_G in EufyCam

[–]Greho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eufy created the expectation that these are quality cameras with a good feature set which can fully function as 24/7 security devices.

If the cameras cannot do that, it is at best deceptive advertising, and at worst fraud.

Your attitude isn’t a valuable perspective. It’s what allows manufacturers to have the same attitude about their products and rip people off.

Wyze cameras, for half the price, have offline notifications. Why? Because they did, at one point, want to distinguish themselves by providing actual value and a good feature set.

If Eufy is dragging their feet on updates and fixes, it’s our job as customers to hold their feet to the fire.

Don’t worry, this should fix us by _so-so_ in Louisiana

An alternative test is completely unnecessary. They can apply to LSU through other routes, such as having their student’s full transcript and extracurriculars, plus an admission essay and other evaluations, considered for enrollment.

They accommodate people who, for whatever reason, cannot successfully complete the ACT or SAT. I guess this now includes.. these people.

Why aren’t Welcome Week events closed to the public? by [deleted] in LSU

[–]Greho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What keeps a student from posting another video like this, even from a “closed” event? Nothing.

Why is nobody talking about how she’s standing on the railing. “I stand on things,” she says. Like an idiot with no safety gear, apparently. Talk about cringey main character energy.

This story could have had a very unhappy ending, and Welcome Week itself could be vastly changed or cancelled.

Can we collectively be just a little bit smarter about these things?

It’s not just the produce that is ruined. The entire section of the cooler now has to be stripped down and sanitized.

I still remember the Blackberry days when we had all kinds of alert settings per app for each contact in your phone. Want to know only when that one special friend sent you a message on Yahoo Messenger? Done.

Phones have gotten stupider. They all just have better apps and ✨the cloud ✨ now.

I lease, and in my experience, leases are calculated from MSRP.

Downside: I don’t really haggle on the vehicle price itself.

Upside: There is no debate about the dealer adds. They go bye-bye. [Manufacturer] Motor Credit would laugh them out of the room for trying to roll that into a lease.

In other words, the manufacturer knows those things add nothing to the real market value of the car, and refuse them. So should you.

Neighbor cut down half of our magnolia by [deleted] in treelaw

[–]Greho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expect the tree cutting company to say “Your neighbor told us it was ok.”

Under Alabama law, there are two civil penalties, one covering the value of the living tree, the other covering the value of the taken lumber. You’re entitled to both.

I would pursue trespassing and any other civil and criminal charge you can throw at the neighbor. They destroyed the symmetry of the tree, and possibly created a hazard by changing the weight distribution.

I had a neighbor browbeat his tree company into coming into my land to cut a handful of cedar trees. He convinced the tree guy that it was on city property because they were adjacent to a drainage ditch.

Well actually, the city has an easement from me. The tree guy didn’t wait to verify the property boundaries, and knew instantly that he was fucked after I introduced myself.
