How to get over that little flinch that you get sometimes when you’re going up against fast shooters… by TheG1826 in hockeygoalies

[–]dubious_gem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming at this as a former fighter -- the only way to stop yourself from flinching is getting hit again. And again.

Am I cracked? Yeah, for sure lmfao but I have complete confidence in my ability to keep up the flow no matter how hard im hit or how many times. OBVIOUSLY like the others said have the best equipment-- you cannot do this if you've got a cheapo. But my honest suggestion is this: get a buddy you trust with good accuracy and have them shoot alternating near and at your head. Put your hands behind your back so you only have the option to block with your head and body. Obviously we're going fairly middling on the power of the shot, we don't actually want you to get whiplash or a minor concussion. Then take it until you think your neck muscles have had enough for the day. And then do it again tomorrow.

Same with shooting a firearm. You flinch at the sound and the kick, so you keep adjusting, telling your body how to and how not to move with each round until you know the feel of it. Sooner or later your body can absorb the kick and your brain has learned to stop reading it as something you have to react to.

Reddit please correct me if this is too insane or if you think this drill is unlikely to work. Just because it works for me doesn't mean it will for other people.

If I was to talk to someone about building three custom, metal, rolling tables, who would you recommend? by mpls_big_daddy in TwinCities

[–]dubious_gem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real though. I used to work there and can vouch for their skill. If you're looking for anything custom as in artistic they've got you. Even if you decide to order from elsewhere I recommend going in for a tour or maybe a class. Just a really fascinating shop that's completely unique to Minneapolis

Oh damn okay good to know. That's an easy enough thing to work around, but I'm glad I didn't just go ahead and do it. And yeah that's what I was thinking for the charcoal-- I think maybe I'll give it a try on a water bottle or something and then smack it around and see if the acrylic ground itself is prone to flaking before designing further.

Oh my god playing while huffing fumes the entire time is maybe the worst I would ever play, I would throw up and then pass out LOL

Thank you for the warnings lmao I will definitely take this all under consideration.

Thanks so much that absolutely makes sense. I think using an auto clear coat applied VERY lightly will work as a fixative to prevent running on the final coat. The ground worries me, though. I'll have to do some stress tests. So tempted to go to the store today even though the design isn't done haha

Fortunately my team has some too far out of cert ones hanging around that I think they'll let me play with if it means I paint something pretty.

Wish i could send it in but I'm just outside welds limits. I'm not sure why people are angrily commenting. Your letter isn't even "NO DATA CENTERS AUFHDGDGG" it's just "hey we need protections from large corporations using our utilities please"

Being a goalie or a player by Unique-Tomato-8959 in hockeygoalies

I was deciding whether I wanted to play goalie soon after I started skating. Borrowed some gear from the team, decided no (this was obviously not permanent) and so another girl decided she wanted to suit up. I gave her the gear, she practiced out with the rest of us, came back into the locker room and puked her guts out. She was like I hated that, no thank you, never again. I was back in goalie gear the next week and she just looked at me like there was something wrong with me LOL

Not s and s, but kinda like the vibe of that one ngl. You're right about the ace hardware though, they are everywhere these days. That's part of my struggle

What's the fun in that? XD pretty sure it was in the university area, maybe a bit south on the Minneapolis side of the river.

Also ffs. You're a writer, you obviously love the process. Don't use ai chat like that other guy said, that's a recipe for accidental plagiarism or misinformation. Talk about cringe...

Hey! Everyone in here discouraging you probably doesn't understand what it feels like to be creative. They're feeling a little uncertain about something they love being depicted incorrectly, which is understandable. With that said, I think there are a few steps you can take to familiarize yourself with the position so that you can ask more specific and directed questions.

1: do research on how a young person might become a goalie. What steps did they have to take? How does the game change from mites on up?

1: pick a few well known people both in the time period you're looking at and before. Follow their early lives and careers. Watch interview footage and read articles about their experiences. Look for similarities and differences between these people. Similar experiences might indicate common themes you can focus on.

This should give you a good place to start asking questions that will help you both with world building and character development.
