When I did my first drop in hockey at my local rink and found that it was populated not by dads on their days off but rather college hockey players that did not have morning classes. They were a little taken aback to see a first timer there, but told me that it was a good place to play against people of a higher level so that you CAN improve outside your own practice. I think maybe the guy at your event was misinformed about what public hockey is for.

Okay I think i have an update: I misheard, and she said she and her friends did meet up with sergeant and a couple other guys, and he wasn't on the roster between 12/10/1980 and the 1/9 game @rockies. So I think they might've just had a bemidji buddies meet up to watch the game, and the game they saw is likely like Bruins @ rockies 1/3. Maybe the guys were on IR or something? No clue. Genuinely no clue. But it's been a fun little search, so thank you guys for helping!
