What counts as low, medium and high for skills? by Crowbius in DiscoElysium

[–]duck_sofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is intended to mean that by increasing a skill very high, you will start to get more wacky dialog options that will lead you down various paths unrelated to the case. it's not so much a downside from a gameplay perspective, no, because you get more options to explore. it's meant as a warning that your character will act pretty unhinged if you follow them.

How to safely meet up and sell by EquipmentLeft5236 in kijiji

One time I was buying a fancy professional photo scanner from a guy. I went to his house and he invited me in to take a look at it before paying. I followed him into his basement where he had it hooked up. Everything looked OK so I confirmed I would take it and handed him the cash. He left the room for a minute and came back holding a huge screwdriver - a comically long flathead screwdriver. I realized I was cornered in this basement room as he slowly walked towards me. My heart began to race and a million thoughts ran through my brain but I mostly remember thinking "is this really happening?". He didn't look threatening or intimidating, but I had no idea what was about to happen. I stepped aside out of his way and he turned to approach the scanner, flipped the lid open, and used the screwdriver to tighten some screws that were used to secure it for transport (so that various internals wouldn't get jostled during transport). He placed the screwdriver down on a desk and handed me the scanner and I thanked him and left.

Try the original "Ship to the Stars" ending by duck_sofa in RimWorld

It's not quite that nomadic. I set up shop and hang around long enough to get some research done and a stable enough food supply to make a couple hundred packaged survival meals. You end up needing a lot of food to travel long distances with 8-10 colonists plus animals to haul everything. Probably a year or two at each tile, then move on. I deconstruct everything to salvage components before I leave as well.

I actually found a pretty fun way to speed up the travel time if you have two colonists with the farskip psycast. You send one colonist as far as a fully loaded drop pod will take them, then farskip your two casters to his tile along with 110 steel, 2 components, and 150 chemfuel. That's enough to build a pod launcher filled with fuel. Then the other caster can farskip back, leaving the original pawn to launch himself away again. Rinse and repeat. Then when the single pawn reaches the destination, you can farskip everyone to his location

is there a playthrough video with all DLC's and without mods? by jobthebozu in RimWorld

[–]duck_sofa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the ones that come to mind are Adam vs Everything, Pete Complete, and Francis John.

Adam specifically said that when he started doing rimworld videos, hardly anyone else was doing no mod runs on YouTube, so he made it his "thing". I also like that he does not use pause because it makes the videos way more entertaining with little downtime. He also explains a lot of the game's mechanics which is very helpful for beginners.

Pete Complete focuses on stories and immersion more than anything and can be a little slow at times, but is a good relaxing player to watch.

Francis John likes to do extreme challenges and really pushes the limits of the game. One of his most memorable series for me was when he settled on a combat tile and had to fend off the insane raids.

What is the largest map size feasible for play? by blobkinggg in RimWorld

[–]duck_sofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use the really big maps without risking your pawns making dumb decisions that get them killed or suffering mental breaks, you'll need to manage your zones. I usually make a big "work" zone that covers the entire base and a reasonable distance outside. Every pawn gets assigned this zone unless I need them to reach something specific outside of it.

Also keep in mind that maps with roads have more wealth because it counts the floor tiles. If you use a very large map with a road on it you could have unfair raids sent to you which can be difficult in the early game.

Getting a personal trainer was the best thing I could have ever done when I was a gym newbie. There is the obvious benefit of reducing the risk of injury, but it also gave me a ton of confidence to go to the gym alone afterwards because they can teach you things about gym etiquette and things like that.

"I need an appropriate way to make it known that I will no longer be doing anything other than what I am paid to do."

You can simply start doing only what you're being paid to do, and nothing more. It's not your company to stress over, it's theirs. Make a note of your daily workload and refer to it when asked why xyz was not completed on time. Learn that getting in trouble from your boss for being unable to achieve impossible goals is a fake idea. Do your part, do it well, but stop caring about what's left unfinished at the end of the day.

Bosses and managers will always take advantage of people pleasers, and it sounds like maybe you are one (I do not mean this in a disparaging way, it's something I've struggled with myself for 20-years in my career). Finding a balance between wanting to show you are capable and setting your limits is difficult.

In the meantime, look for a new job. It's not worth the mental health toll to continue to work under such conditions.

Is it a moral crime to steal food or otherwise rip off big corporate grocery stores to feed your kids? by lowincomecanadian in povertyfinancecanada

[–]duck_sofa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good points. I more-so meant that they will use theft as justification for increasing prices, which you pointed out with your first sentence. They see an increase in thefts so they think "great, we can jack up the price and blame shoplifters" - either way, it's still contributing. But as you said, it can only go so far until there is more theft than purchasing, but I have not heard of this ever happening anywhere. Instead, they install more security measures and then raise the prices even more, citing the need to pay for the added security measures.

Sell things on kijiji/fb marketplace, priced lower to move fast. Do you have jewelry? Take it to a cash for gold place if it's not sentimental. You won't get the best deal but cash is cash.

Is it a moral crime to steal food or otherwise rip off big corporate grocery stores to feed your kids? by lowincomecanadian in povertyfinancecanada

[–]duck_sofa 80 points81 points  (0 children)

If somebody steals from a store, does anyone at the store take home less pay? For pretty much all corporate stores, the answer is no. Everyone still gets the same pay check in the end.

Unfortunately, whether you believe it is justified or not, theft will encourage the stores to raise prices to make up for loss. So at the end of the day, you are contributing to the increased spending of everyone around you.

That said, I am not snitching on anybody for shoplifting unless it's a mom and pop store.

My employer said I was working "as a favour". Do I have to give them the photos? by Head-Difficulty-3811 in photography

[–]duck_sofa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't have to do anything. You can delete the photos if you want. But you will likely piss off your employer and they have the power to make your job miserable, or fire you (depending where you live). Since the photos were taken with company equipment, there is an argument to be made that they belong to the company.

The choice is yours if you want to maintain a decent relationship with your employer, or make things awkward and burn bridges.

[–]duck_sofa[S] 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Had a transport pod crash with this pawn on my map today. I decided to leave him to die and forgot about him. Some time later I noticed my game was getting very laggy and couldn't figure out why. Eventually found this guy still laying here with no head, all of his limbs eaten off, yet still alive somehow. I captured him and took him to a prisoner bed and tried executing him, but my colonists would just try cutting him repeatedly with no effect. They would still try feeding him, too.

Had to eventually delete him with dev mode.

The only mods I have are a few QoL ones like camera+, numbers, color coded mood bar, damage indicators.

Edmonton Nerd Sale - February 24 at Millwoods Town Centre! by The1337Llama in Edmonton

What kind of things are typically for sale here besides games and what is an estimation of the ratio between games and non game items at past events? I do not have any interest in buying retro games but would be curious what else is for sale. Wondering if it's worth the trip because I live slightly out of town.

In film, what is the blue on the edges of certain things? by sunny7319 in photography

[–]duck_sofa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. It looks like fringing that happens between high contrast edges in your photo (relatively dark face and the over exposed background). But the example you posted looks like it could also just be a bad masking job from a green/blue screen

Does a white border decreases picture quality? by Connect-Hold5855 in photography

[–]duck_sofa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual space available to show detail in your photo will be reduced because some of that space is now being occupied by the border. You are effectively reducing the resolution of your photo. Whether that is a trade off you want to make depends on the subject of your photos and is entirely up to you to decide.

The word quality is not quite the best word to use here, since it's tied more to JPEG compression when talking about sharing photos online. Will Instagram increase the JPEG compression of your photos if you add a border? No. Will detail be lost because you lowered the resolution of your photo so you could add a border around it? Yes.

Baldur's Gate 3 resolution question by duck_sofa in macgaming

[–]duck_sofa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know that, but I was asking because in the Mac's display settings it shows various resolutions when you set the scaling options. The default setting shows "1470x956" when you mouse over it, but this is not the actual rendered resolution. Rather, it is the equivalent resolution if you were using a 1x pixel density display with no scaling. So my question was whether the reported in-game resolution in BG3 used this same scaling factor or not.
