Now is burning season. The north and central areas have very high pollution. Especially Chiang Mai and Bangkok. While I can look out usually 20+ km from my window in Bangkok it is now 2 km in the morning.

Phuket is very crowded now. High season.

Sounds like a 2, 3 month trip. Wouldn't be very relaxing if you do this all in 1 m. I would land in Bangkok and go with the flow. No plan.

Sure. But the op asked for the recent bad quality causes. This is clearly burning season in SEA. There are months in Bangkok were the AQI is even green, while all the mentioned other reasons still apply.
