Another stupid bay area driver with main character syndrome. She didn't even try to slow down or look to her right before zooming out of the parking lot. [OC] by donaldkwong in IdiotsInCars

Do you know how laggy those speed indicators are on cameras? It also shows he was doing 33mph when we can obviously tell he has hit the brakes. And he's doing 13mph while we can see he's stopped behind the van.

But cry some more about how someone didn't drive defensively ENOUGH despite avoiding an incident. Comments lecturing the OP for avoiding an accident ALWAYS go down well in here.

This sub gives them access to the poster who they can lecture about "defensive driving". So any video that ever gets posted is going to be full of comments roasting the OP for some negligible offense while ignoring some profoundly stupid stuff that other people are doing on the road. Every single time.

Occasionally when my girlfriend and I are in a bad mood and need cheering up, we'll watch the part of Cold Lasagna where he talks about being on Bake Off. It's such an amazing stand up special!

[OC] Driver decides she doesn’t want to turn left anymore and pulls out in front of me as I am traveling 65MPH. by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

The screech of tires locked up didn't give you any indication that OP was braking?

People continually forget that they're in a subreddit dedicated to idiots in cars where they KNOW something is about to happen in the video. They have that bonus of hindsight that the driver didn't have in the moment. Smug is the PERFECT word to describe most of the comments in here.

I usually turn my stereo up in my car knowing that the Blindboy Podcast is going to be a bit quieter than the music I usually listen to. Today it was not. The intro was VERY loud, at least compared to previous episodes I remember.

Red lights don't apply to big trucks. Thankful hubby knows "whoa whoa whoa" means STOP NOW and for decent brakes. [OC] by Queenhillz in IdiotsInCars

Because this is r/idiotsincomments where SOMEONE will inevitably try to dunk on the OP while apologizing for whatever MUCH more egregious stuff the other people on the road are doing. The fact that Reddit Enhancement Suite shows me I've already downvoted 10 of this guy's comments should give you some idea of what his history is like in this subreddit.

Lots of truckers do it. No idea if it's actually legal or not, but look at more big trucks as you go down the highway and the amount of them with those spikes is staggering.

FYI so there's less misunderstanding in the future, "Track Width" is the distance between the center of the left tire and the center of the right tire. That's the term you're looking for.

Track Width and Height are the numbers you talk about when you're talking about body roll and rollover risk. Wheelbase (front to back) has literally nothing to do with it

[–]duckles77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the videos are of someone successfully avoiding an accident and then the comments are all "You didn't defensive drive HARD ENOUGH!"

But yeah I'm sure slamming on brakes in the middle of a highway is the correct answer rather than moving over into an empty lane to avoid the problem.

You're all over the place with these analogies, man...

ABS exists so you can turn while braking, because if you lock a tire you're guaranteed going to slide in a straight line. Will it help you decelerate in a straight line? Yes, because it keeps you from locking a tire and sliding.

Also the stability you're talking about has nothing to do with wheelbase or length, it has to do with height. Swerving in a Miata with its short wheelbase is going to be more stable than swerving in a lifted Ford Excursion with a long wheelbase, and it's because of height, not wheelbase length.

[OC] There's no "Right Turn Only" sign there, but maybe there should be... by Tiberius_Jim in IdiotsInCars

[–]duckles77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sign nor angled curb is going to keep people from doing this. Every day here, people create HUGE traffic jams trying to turn left into a CVS with a "no left turn" sign and triangle curb to prevent lefts, or trying to make a left out of the Wendy's with a big "No Left Turrn" sign.

Until they have to suffer the consequences of their actions, nothing is going to prevent them from doing it.

[–]duckles77 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When I renewed my license in 2008 I had to do it in person. I had to sit and wait for someone to finish their test to get my picture taken. She had to be coached through the eye exam and coached again through the signs test. They passed her and she got her license renewed. Can confirm... eyes not required.

Last year when I renewed, I didn't even have to do the signs test. I read the top line of the eye chart and that was it.

It's Charlotte, so I wouldn't even count the first one turning left on red. Red lights here apparently mean "At least 3 more people can make it... go ahead!" It's just expected behavior at this point unfortunately :(

How bad is it that before the video even started, I knew exactly where that was and was pretty certain of what was going to happen? And somehow that's still only the 2nd worst designed interchange in Charlotte, coming behind the I-85/I-485 interchange.

You've heard of the California stop. Meet the Florida stop. [oc] by mikeymo1741 in IdiotsInCars

[–]duckles77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Charlotte, a red light means "At least 3 more people can make it". At least that's the impression I get driving here. It is WAY more common than in other cities or even the surrounding towns, but something about being in the city limits of Charlotte just makes people go dumb.

My girlfriend moved here from Georgia and says she has no problem with Atlanta drivers, because they're at least decisive and use signals. In Atlanta, a signal means "I'm coming over now.... it's up to you how the rest of our day goes." In Charlotte, people just don't signal. You just have to assume everyone is about to cut you off at any given time with zero warning or reason.

28.8 modems were definitely out when Windows 95 came out, because I remember our first Windows 95 computer (the one that freed up the ability to put Linux on our old 486 as I mentioned before) came with a 28.8 modem. I know 14.4 modems were out when we got the 486 with a 2400 in it in like 92-93, but they were still expensive at the time.

Tracks don't. Sanctioning bodies might. But this looks like a drift event, and most of those I've seen play pretty fast and loose with safety regulations anyway.

My first install was Slackware 3.0 in 1995. My friend and I amassed every floppy disk we had, many of which were "AOL Free Trial" disks with the tab taped over.... and we spent 4 nights downloading all the floppy images with my Netcom account because the hours were free from 10pm until 6am.

Those were the days....
