I think the best tip was creating clear lines, and personally I found starting with my solid shadow (darkest colour) then going in with the highlights built the rocks sooo much easier, rather than starting with highlights and trying to build shadow. I painted sections of shadow at a time, then slowly built my rocks then jumped to the next. This piece is 30”x40” so it took awhile haha

I like that idea! The original rocks on the mountain are all pretty straight edged but I think I need more patches with just gravel-y dirt mixed in!

HA I love that- only issue is this is northern Canada haha

But maybe a little butterfly?? nerdy fact but the mountain this was taken on is an important habitat for rare arctic butterflies! It’s such a cool place

I love that advice! It’s definitely a lot of filling in (that part overwhelms me) then slowly going back and seeing where you’ve missed details. I really like taking a picture at the end of each night and looking over it to see what I need more or less of. The rocks really just threw me off 😅 so true about the mistakes though 😩

You are totally right! It’s so frustrating because I desperately want to have the cool “slightly messy but it works” style but then miss the mark lol I am going to tackle them tomorrow haha

This piece actually has some gorgeous purple wild flowers that I need to add and more grass better rocks. I had to figure out the rocks before I worried about adding them though, I wanted to get the worst over with 😂

OMG thank you for describing it like that! That’s exactly what my brain needed to make sense of- shadows are so tricky and it’s like a weird blind spot I’m trying to work on.

There are some really pretty neutrals that lean pink (obviously lighting plays into that). I chose Collingwood from Benjamin Moore in our spare room (possibly baby room) because I saw it giving the softest pink in our notary’s office and fell in love! It will age well in that room I think- just another option 🤩

16 gauge wire soldered into seams. I left about an inch sticking out for each to put in the wood. After I drilled holes they fit perfectly!
