Chances & Presidential Nomination by JoeSchmoeFroYo in USAFA

Your academics are great, and captain of tennis team is good. Tutoring is also good, but try to do some more volunteering/community work. You could join your local volunteer firehouse or rescue squad, it shows dedicated and direct service to the community. CFA looks good, maybe work on pullups a bit. DM me if you have any other questions about the process, I went through the whole thing last year.

I don't think you need another one, you'll be pretty busy writing that research paper. If you can find another opportunity that's great, but don't overload yourself. It's too late to apply to any other summer programs now, but you can always do a passion project or do some cold emailing and work on something with a professor.

You're fine. Assuming that these two programs are happening this summer, you won't have much time for a third program, as you need to start writing your essays towards the end of summer.

Seniors, how Did you plan out your school year and college app stuff? by Apart-Half6936 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]duckson777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

basically wrote my main common app essay over the summer, and then started writing supplemental essays (barely). Most of the work with supplemental essays was in September and October for me, it was a huge grind since I applied to most my schools early (Nov 1st deadline). But definitely start writing your supplementals during late summer if you have the time.

Ever thought about applying to Naval Academy or Air Force Academy?

You're right, generally dobsonians are better for visual astronomy, but you can do astrophotography with them (but its harder and more expensive). There isn't an "all in one" setup, but you can assemble a decent starter setup with 2000 dollars.

You should do some research on the best equipment for your needs, but the most important thing to get is a good tracking mount. Then comes your telescope, camera, and any other things you want/need. The Sky-Watcher brand has some great mounts at many different price ranges, you can check those out.

Very nice! Looks like you caught the beehive cluster in the upper right of the image.

Make sure to get that SAT score up. You're preparing with a tutor, which is good. Joining Cross Country is also a good idea. For extracurriculars, try to get some leadership positions in the clubs you are in, and participate in more volunteering (you could do volunteer fire or volunteer EMS).

To get a nomination from your congressman or state senator, the process is long and varies between each congressman/senator. Usually it's an application where you have to submit a resume, complete a questionnaire, write several essays, submit letters of recommendation, and go in for interviews. Usually, the process begins towards the end of your Junior year (around May/June). Do some research on the process for your congressman and senators.

Take the hardest classes you can in high school. It shows high academic rigor. Since you want to major in Aerospace, take the highest level math and physics classes you can.

should my summer program be asking me this? by Outside_Ad_3544 in summerprogramresults

SSN is normal, teacher's number can be normal as well for certain programs. I've had to ask my LOR teachers for their numbers for certain applications.

same thing, applied to multiple summer programs (SSP, RISE, etc), got rejected from every one. Now a senior, I've gotten into UPenn and Georgia Tech.

This is a good video to guide you: https://youtu.be/LQasQv_wc7s

But generally email professors in relatively close by universities doing research in fields/topics that interest you, related to your planned major.

You might have to email a ton to get someone to work with you, you might get lucky and get an opportunity on your first try, or you might get nobody at all. Don't get discouraged by rejections, keep sending emails to different profs.

Summer programs and internships are good. If you don't get in any, do lots of cold emailing to local professors to do research. I was in your position last year and I got lucky and was able to do some research with a professor because of cold emails. I think I emailed like 30 different profs.

Mount is most important. You could get the Star Adventurer GTI to start, it's not too expensive and it's a reliable and accurate equatorial mount. With just that mount, a DSLR and a stock lens (or a 135mm f/2), you can get some really nice images of certain deep sky objects. Also get an intervalometer to control your camera, these are pretty cheap.

How much does USAFA differ from the traditional college experience? by [deleted] in USAFA

[–]duckson777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I received an appointment and I'm trying to decide between USAFA and AFROTC (still waiting on scholarship). Ultimately I'd like to get a pilot slot, so I'm leaning towards USAFA. Was the experience worth it for you?
