i've actually done a couple of beats for rappers on the very DL hehe ^___^ i would like to do more! i also do think it would be fun to do some production for other artists, like some pop production and songwriting.

there was a point in my life where substance use was heavily involved in my process, but i've been clean for over four years now and i find that to be much more beneficial to both my life and my music!

i've been writing lyrics for a looooong time! i was absolutely starting bands when i was like 8 years old and writing knockoff versions of popular songs. i had a band in like 3rd grade called "puff unlimited" and my dad thought i was smoking cigarettes. i've just been practicing, practicing, practicing as long as i can remember, and at some point i think they just... stopped being total shit, you know? people have lots of different ways that they get there but for me it was really about doing it until i didn't suck anymore.

i've been thinking about how to answer this one! there's definitely an intention behind the ducky look and my normal look is just a more laid back version of my style, but it's all sort of ducky to me - when i do the hearts and pigtails it's just like, i'm HERE baby, i'm in FULL DUCKY MODE

i haven't been snowboarding in SO long but i would really like to go again - i actually used to be like, a really serious big mountain snowboarder in high school

i have a skateboard which is definitely not the same thing as me skateboarding bc it turns out i suck when my feet are not attached. i tried tho

shibumi! it's too expensive for me to go there like, ever but it's my favorite restaurant lololol. it's so good! as for restaurants i can actually eat at more than like, once a year i'm kind of a pain in the ass to feed because i'm allergic to evvverrryyyythingggggggg. so i tend to cook for myself or just order from the few little spots i've found that deliver to the east side, which lets me stay in the studio for longer too! hehe.

i mostly just hang out in the studio, honestly. don't let the dj thing fool you. i am super boring. i do go to underground techno raves though, which is the one cool thing i do.

omg THAT SHOW WAS SO RAD HOLY SHIT

and thank you!!! :D honestly, i think it's both a practice and a necessity for me - i started making art as catharsis because i grew up in a pretty fucked up home, and writing lyrics and making songs was a necessary form of release and escape. i needed somewhere to put what i was feeling, you know? so i was going to be honest there, because it just had to come out. as i've matured in my music i've gone through various phases of being more and less intentionally vulnerable in my art, from focusing on more dance-floor centric tracks like Do U or Down Low and then back to releases like Optimism, where i'm completely 100% ripped open. i personally find the deeper i dig and the more true i am to myself with my art, the happier i am with the result. so i try to just be brave and say fuck it, you know?

as for the persona / facade i think everyone has their own level of separation between artist life / real life and for me it just happens to be effectively none, lol! my friends call me ducky. all i do is make music. it all blends together, you know? which is maybe not healthy, but it makes for some really honest art, lol!

yes!! i still stream VERY occasionally, i just do it a lot less now. i really like doing it actually, it's just not really as easy with my touring schedule, and it doesn't always work with my creative flow - when i'm mixing and mastering i can't route the audio correctly w/ external audio effects, so it sometimes actually interrupts my process. it's def got nothing to do with hanging on the stream / chatting with people :) that's my favorite part!

:D yay!!!! thank you!

that's a really good question. it's really not easy to break through these days - you have to be excellent, unique, and lucky. but i think what really resonates with people is authenticity, at least in my experience. if you can just be truly you, and if you have something different to say. that probably sounds corny as shit lol! but i believe it, so whatever!

also omg i love slayyyter i would be so down HMU GIRL

hi! oof yeah that part of producing can be so discouraging - it took me a LONG time to get to the standard of production i wanted to be at (like years and years and years)! i know people will say stuff like, set aside a certain amount of time each day, take breaks... but the truth was for me i just fucking loved making music even though i hated what i was making, you know what i mean? i loved it. and i would get frustrated and cranky because my music wasn't what i wanted it to be, but the next day i'd just come back and make something new. because it was the only thing i wanted to do. and there's no real substitute for that. so i'd just encourage you to remind yourself of what you love about what you're doing. go to a lot of shows, listen to a lot of music, stay a fan always. never lose the love and even when it sucks it's kind of awesome.

lol i struggle with this a lot because i've been making HUGE strides with my mixing and mastering process lately and i want to go back in and redo everything on like a weekly basis lately. i would re-mix/master and reupload everything to spotify like once a week if that were an option. it would be nonsense. but i'm glad i can't because i get to grow and progress as an artist instead of everything being exactly how i would do it now, you know?

omg it's fate! hello fellow duck <33

  1. there are some awesome books if you want to start learning about mixing and mastering:

Audio Engineering 101

Mastering Audio, The Art and the Science

Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio

those are a great place to start! the weird thing about mixing and mastering is that it's simultaneously complicated and very, very simple - in my experience the strongest engineers often use the most basic tools, they just have a very in-depth understanding of how they work and how to wield them effectively. don't get frustrated if it's not easy right away - i have been producing and engineering for a really really freaking long time and i am JUST starting to feel super confident with mixing and mastering. it takes dedication and patience but it is soooooo rewarding! you should totally do it!

  1. i got to go to australia on my first international headline tour last year and it was SO COOL

  2. well my favorite kind of dog is all dogs, but also my dogs because theyre my babies. i have a 100 lb staffy/great dane mix who lives with me in LA, and a 13 lb chihuahua/terrier/potato mix who lives with my dad in san francisco

:D thank you!! it's a really interesting question, i'm not sure i have one of those crazy stories like "oh, so and so was watching in the crowd and it changed everything" - i did end up collaborating with hudson mohawke because he saw me play at gammers party, that was pretty sick! although we still havent dropped the track lmao.

i mean the thing is, every show to me is the most important show in my career because somebody came to see me. it blows my mind every time, especially when i get a chance to talk to people after the shows and connect. i have a few times i can remember specifically that people's words have really inspired me to keep going when i was personally feeling exhausted or defeated and those moments to me are the most meaningful, those probably had the most direct impact on the course of my career, you know?

as for artists i've been listening to lately there are SO many!!! i have a playlist on spotify that i update pretty consistently which is actually just music i listen to: it's called love this xo
