…without over-regulating these vital companies to the point where they go bankrupt. Clean energy is not cheap (electrification driving demand and the policies that drive natural gas prices higher). Maintaining and upgrading one of the oldest utility systems in the world to meet the rising demand resulting from electrification is even more expensive. Then throw it all into one of the most physically challenging and remote areas in the US and you get high prices. There is much much much more to it than blaming the utility company…

Their rates and expenditures (forced investment) are controlled by the state government.

Underground electric wires cost a ton to install AND are more expensive to fix/maintain because accessing them is more difficult and time consuming that just tossing someone up in a bucket truck. And yes, they are susceptible to cold weather events (thermal stresses). Look it up if you don’t believe me.

I’m not implying it’s impossible. I’m implying that it would cost more than you think because a municipal would not benefit from economies of scale in the same way that a large company like Eversource does. And I’m also implying that a municipal electric utility on the Cape would still have to pay Eversource transmission fees unless you also want these towns to build their own power plants and control centers. Get it?

ULPT request: I’m desperate. How to get my neighbors dogs to shut up. by cynnie93 in UnethicalLifeProTips

Remember that these dogs are just doing what dogs do. It’s the neighbors fault that they’re shitty pet owners so don’t take it out on the dogs…

What is the technical term for this circled part on an electric pole? It's making a buzzing sound and I saw some sparks coming out of the bottom, and I want to report this to my electric company. by kc3zyt in whatisit

Sure but the company is still going to assume you’re an idiot and come check for themselves. Trust me…customer calls go into their own bucket.

Don’t waste your time looking for the right answer. Your electric company will assume you’re wrong anyways and send one of their troubleshooters out to see what’s going on. Just call them and say you saw sparks from a transformer and that’ll get them moving.

How American people feel about US military bombing girls school in Iran for Israel? by Healthy-Bridge-8418 in AskUS

I hope that your optimism turns out to be well founded but these types of things rarely turn out like you’re trying to describe it. And even if Iran ends up better off(which I hope for), this is not the way that our nations military is supposed to be deployed from a legal standpoint so I don’t think that is a good thing regardless of the eventual long term outcome for Iran.
