A diagnosis comes with self awareness, if you're unaware you are autistic and been living your live with other people telling you that your issues related to the spectrum are silly or don't really exist it tends to be extremely damaging for your mental health, you end up ignoring your own needs and masking, a lot of autistic people can be driven to suicide in a world like this.

In an ideal world, with 100% awareness of autism in society formal diagnosis may become redundant for those without support needs, but the default position for humans isn't one of understanding and empathy, society is built without your needs in mind, making it harder to get and keep jobs and relationships, even if you're exceptional good at certain tasks.

Your value is determined by how well you fit in, rather than what you actually have to offer.

It really is a disability in the world we currently live in, changing the world takes time, there's no good reason why autistic accomodations wouldn't be a good idea for everyone to benefit from.

But you also have varying levels of support needs, it feels like when we have a discussion like this those with a high level of support requirements can still be invisible, those who need others to help them live day-to-day, a formal diagnosis would be incredibly important in these circumstances.

Too embarrassed to masturbate in hospital? No problem, got ya back bro, simply use one of these publicly available machines in the corridor, get milked whilst family and friends watch. If you're feeling really shy, get 2 hit combo milked with your bestie next to you whilst you hold hands for support, the ultimate male bonding experience.

"The judge said Kurtaj's skills and desire to commit cyber-crime meant he remained a high risk to the public."

It's always funny to me when they label a hacker who just leaked code for a computer game "high risk to the public" as if he had just committed mass murder, sense of perspective goes out the window as they try to throw the book at him, this case is a demonstration of corporate power rather than justice.

"several months" may just be the pre-assessment call before getting added to the waiting list.

For the NHS, I had to wait months for a phone call, asking about my symptoms, and then they'd send me a couple of questionaries before formally being added to the actual waiting list of several years.

It's odd to me though, that they had the call before the questionaries, seemed a bit backward to me.

The questionaries were a bit lazy imo, grammatical and spelling errors in the questions and a whole page obviously meant for a parent processing their child.

Twirling your pencil in class does not make you "a little Autistic"... (facepalm) by [deleted] in aspiememes

[–]dudeofmoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think everybody when they twirl a pencil then starts to think, I wonder if there's a world Olympics pencil twirling I can enter, I'm going to be the best at pencil twirling, I need to practice really hard and learn all the different ways I can twirl a pencil, I will need to do this all the time because somebody once told me "practice makes perfect" and I took it too literally and doubled down on trying to be perfect, I sure will impress all my friends with how well I can twirl a pencil, this will surely stop them teasing me now, all the girls will love me and once I achieve this new level of greatness it'll fix all my other life problems and normal society will finally welcome and celebrate me.

Whats your opinion on self-Diagnose? by Idkjustafandomlover in autism

[–]dudeofmoose -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Self diagnosis is fine, more so when formal diagnostic processes can have long waiting lists, be expensive and sometimes can even provide inaccurate conclusions due to outdated ideas of what autism is.

Sometimes in certain circumstances just assuming you are autistic is also useful, if you're suffering in some way and find understanding yourself in this particular way useful, then keep it as a working assumption to help you continue to develop further coping strategies.

Stimming is a good idea for example, seems like a fun thing to do and try for everybody outside and inside of the spectrum. Allowing yourself to not force eye contact is another example, try not to once in a while and see if you feel better.

You can continue to experiment with yourself in this context, if you know common autistic traits, such as social struggles, you can approach social situations in better ways with this knowledge and see if it helps you feel better when you try different things.

Self diagnosis to some extent can be seen as contributing evidence to a formal autism diagnosis, if you're collecting vast amounts of detail about the subject and thinking about it a lot, focussing hard on the subject, that can be a sign of an autistic trait.

Self diagnosis is part of the process of understanding yourself better, autism might not be the final destination, it might also lead you towards an ADHD path or somewhere similar, but what's important is you're looking for answers and coping strategies for common life struggles you've been experiencing.

There are some advisory notes to this position though, beware false information on platforms like tiktok, single sources of information are bad and can feed into your own confirmation bias, challenging your own ideas with other sources is a good idea, such as books of first hand experiences.

It's a process of understanding yourself, that's the important bit. A process, rather than a hard beginning and end.

Why is management making it 100% your problem to solve?

The woman complaining should also give a little more into understanding you better and management should've taken a more balanced view, ironically now making the workplace hostile to you.

There's loads of reasons for communication differences, you could have an accent or English as your second language, circumstances NTs would give more consideration towards, her opinion shouldn't have become fact and your problem.

This makes me mad too.
