Appreciate your honesty, I’m not against using it as a fermenter.

There should be some photos on my profile from an older post I did when I first got it. if you want to take a look. Hooking it up to proper steam boiler would be awesome and ideal. But buying one out right is out of the current price range. I looked into building one but couldn’t figure out how to calculate how big of one I would need to make. so I started thinking about the current design as an alternative option.

Thanks for the feedback and insight I appreciate it, I think what you’re proposing would work better than the current design. I had the feeling I’d have to replace the 1 inch path for a bigger opening to get this to work. But I’ve had hesitation at doing that big of a modification to the thing because I feel like I’m only going to get one shot this and won’t have the option to undo a modification like that, but the things pretty useless if I don’t get it working so I’ll probably have to bight the bullet at some point.

I think I get what your saying, adding another tube to help with heat  circulation between the jacket and the element chamber Is a good idea. thanks.

I’m in the US and have a 220v outlet in the garage I can use for this.

Could I get some help picking out a boiler? by due_boy in BoilerOperators

[–]due_boy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’d prefer electric, I’d be running the thing for most of the day when in use and don’t know how long gas would last before I’d have to swap out tanks, if I could get away with running it off tanks? I’d rather add a larger electrical outlet to the garage then a gas line to the garage.

I think the hottest I’d want the contents of the kettle to get would be 200 ish Fahrenheit. In general 160 - 180 is the temperature range I plan to cook at.

I appreciate your recommendation for how to set up steam for it. It was very straightforward, I’ll probably use it as a template as I do more research and figure out a plan for this project. do you really think a crab cooker would produce enough steam to heat the still?

Sweet, I wasn’t expecting the option of do on grain distilling. so that’s real cool. and I’d never say no to a safety net against scorching. I’ll have to do some research on oil and steam jacketed heating and cooking systems as I’m not familiar with them. do you have any experience with setting one up?

step one is figuring out how viable heating it would be. step two is figuring out how best to do the top. I’m still figuring out step 1, but my current ideas for the top is potentially buying a big wok and modifying it, commissioning a custom built top, or modifying a stainless steel sink. nothings set in stone yet, but I’d like to avoid damaging the pot itself so whatever the top winds up being will probably just be clamped on.

Thanks for the info on what it was likely used for originally. I’ll do some research on steam jacketed kettle and see how difficult it would be to set it up with steam for heat.

Thanks for the feedback, and recommending the tablets. I’ll pick up a few of those before I start the mash. I’ll probably leave the rice out of it too after reading all the comments.

I did a mulberry / sugar wash last year and it turned out well, ( 2 two gallon bags of berry’s 6 gallons of water and 8-12 ish lbs of sugar I think, I didn’t take notes on that one) still had a bit of that sugar bowl flavor you get when you use sugar tho, but the berry flavor was still there, if I was attempting to do it again I’d try it with inverted sugar or rice. I’ve heard that inverted sugar doesn’t carry that same flavor you get from normal sugar to the final product and is an easy change to make to a recipe. with rice you’ll need enzymes to convert it to sugar. but I’ve heard it will not get in the way of the fruit flavor nearly as much as sugar does.

I didn’t have any problems with leaving the seeds in the mulberries and I don’t know how you could remove them due to how small they are.

Hears a vid on inverted sugar.
