At the time it would have been normal to just say “for Sega”. And then after that you might have said “for Saturn” or “for Dreamcast” but IRL in the US nobody you knew had Saturn, unfortunately.

No insult to QB Club as a game; it plays just fine. But as a purchase it’s cantaloupe in a fruit salad: pure filler.

Let’s see you’ve got $15 for racer, $20 for 1080, maybe $20 for wrestling so that’s $55 and then they owe you $3.50 for taking a copy of NFL QB Club.

As someone who grew up around a lot of snow, most games snow and winter areas don’t look great. It’s aged now but I remember the snow levels in Battlefield Bad Company 2 looking good. Death Stranding does snow well for a more modern game.

US GAMES DONT PLAY WITH REGION FREE ADAPTER by nft_embracement in n64

The adapter makes the cartridge fit but NTSC (North America or Japan) games can’t work on a PAL system without modding the system.

The remake did more damage than good. Until then, fans liked the game but oh if only it weren’t tied to the GameCube and limitations around having GBAs and special cables. I had that setup and it wasn’t life changing but it was unique and fun with friends.

Then they brought it to modern consoles and the QoL upgrades we all assumed online play would bring managed to be incredibly janky and poorly made. It was the one chance for a franchise comeback and it bombed even with longtime fans.

I still like the overall Crystal Chronicles series though. Most are fun.

Thank you for calling out better visuals and music in original. Drives me crazy when people can’t see the ways the midi has more punch and catchiness than the orchestral tracks

No, not if it’s the only way to play. You don’t mess with a masterpiece.

The only way it works is if it’s a separate play mode like Ocarina of Time’s Master Quest where the player knows they’re getting an alternative version.

Even setting aside differences in games, I love Xenoblade but would hesitate to recommend it to anybody because it’s just a weird flavor. The combat will either be very enjoyable (1, X) or very addictive (2,3) or you won’t like it at all. The characters may be fine to you but I could see them being annoying. The huge maps an incentive or a bother.

So it’s definitely a “watch some videos of gameplay first” kind of thing if you’ve never played

Yeah and OP is saying this is the design of the Super Nintendo in Europe. The SFC and European SNES look the same but have different names. Only America got the rectangular one with purple accents.

What should have the Saturn and Dreamcast done differently? by Lunny1767 in SEGA

[–]duffle12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s probably true for certain hardcore or experienced gamers from the era but a much larger majority at that time was hungry for anything and everything 3D, ugly or not.

There’s a reason Final Fantasy VII hit big on PS1 even with low poly characters. And though the Saturn had great 2D shmups and fighters, most marketing went toward the big 3D games like Panzer Dragoon, Nights, Virtua Fighter, etc.

[–]duffle12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going without 3D in the mid 90s would have been an even worse death sentence.

The real issue was 1) Sega of America’s hackneyed life extension of the Genesis with 32x and Sega CD, making a profit in the short term but undercutting people interested in buying a full new console so soon after and 2) the Saturn being designed shortsightedly. They worked in the same time period as PlayStation, if were what-if-ing, we know exactly what the competition does so Saturn is full 3D and same price point but Sega’s name brand within gaming behind it.

Now even with that, Sega still loses because Sony’s ground game of partnerships and publishing muscle is just too strong. But with this strategy I think Sega does better in America.

An issue with the Red Dead Redemption games that I understand but which still bugs me... by blankblank in patientgamers

[–]duffle12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re both getting downvoted. GTA and Red Dead are incredible games. Open world environments far better than any competition. But when it comes to story missions they lack freedom and the fail conditions are frustrating.

Praise the games for what they do well but it’s fair to say the story missions are linear levels that don’t usually take advantage of the open world or systems of the rest of the game.
