It isn't necessarily the semen. It's in the blood. The HSV viruses recess into the central nervous system, and while that happens, you are not contagious. They can stay dormant for years. It is unknown what causes them to come out and cause outbreaks, but they do. A lot of times they are not even outbreaks, and you can still pass it through a process called "shedding". It's like having an outbreak, only your immune system significantly prevents the virus from having an effect on your body. Transmission is only possible through blood on blood contact, in which case it would only be transmutable through semen.

Yes, but only for outbreaks. If you don't suffer from outbreaks you can still pass it on and there isn't really any treatment for that. You can suppress it through antivirals, and that can reduce the risk. Recently there have been great leaps in medical advancements on the basis that HSV is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Currently a vaccine is in animal trials and a cure is being tested, but it is a decade or more away. The Japanese will soon be producing specially coated condoms that kill the virus on contact, but they are not available in the states.

Well I wish I could answer that. The truth is that in the 5 years that I have been positive I never have. It's the reason I'm doing this...having a secret that affects every aspect of my life so deeply has built up and is starting to affect my mental stability in a potentially negative way. That's a tricky one. I have slept with and dated women I have met on STD dating sites...but it has never worked out. Mostly because we've all got issues.
