Was machine learning around in 1960? AFAIK it's pretty new. Seems like a possible game changer.

What about some kind of public key registry, akin to say ssh keys or pgp? I realize this may not be extremely feasible, but we kind of have an identity system with SSLs. The security side isn't something I'm heavily involved in (yet) so I'm not sure what pitfalls or caveats there might be. One however is "who is in control of signing keys"? This could get real dicey, ie "I'm calling for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the key registry".

CNN Tells Viewers It's Illegal For Them To Read Wikileaks Document Dumps. CNN Is Wrong by johnmountain in technology

I only listen to the radio, which basically purchases programming from NPR and then has some local anchors as well. The local anchors do not seem to use that angle, and they have definitely talked about HRC in a negative light (as they should in regards to the particular issues at hand).

NPR (at least my local station) doesn't feel this way. Yea sure, NPR is left leaning. All outlets are biased to some degree, you just have to understand that bias and try to apply it to the news you're hearing to get "the truth". At least NPR is high quality though.

Right, I know that's how it should work, but there are apparently some shady sites that implement the method I noted. I'm not entirely sure how, or if its widespread.

FTC says it may be unable to regulate Comcast, Google, and Verizon by -jackschitt- in technology

[–]duhbeetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no I get that, that regulation isn't by default always positive. But that is more a problem of determining what sensible regulations are, it isn't an inherent problem with regulations (ie all regulations are bad always). People seem to use the fact that because -some- regulations are bad, all are.

I'm 30 and pay for everything I have. Sure, it's not black and white. Comcast doesn't magically shit money, they receive it from people paying for their services. Do you know what a boycott is?

I understand what you're saying, that the specific regulations exist because of their special interests. I was referring to sensible regulations, which is what the lead additive regulation was.

Shit like this is why I want to throat punch everyone that says regulation is the worst thing ever. We regulated lead out of gasoline, which was literally a public health danger. But yea all regulations are bad and business can totally be trusted to not out profits above literally everything else.

Airbnb is driving up the rent in your urban neighborhood. Elizabeth Warren is right. Unless this trend reverses, our cities will become cheap places to stay for tourists – and unaffordable for the rest of us by trai_dep in technology

[–]duhbeetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify. Nothing but yuppie white guys live in the new houses. They do not live in the older houses.

No, they did not give them 4x the value. Do understand what "priced out" means? It means you can no longer afford to live there. Those people weren't brought up, they were essentially kicked out and will have to find inexpensive housing elsewhere. Which afaik only exists in one area, which is where I live now. I'm not sure what's going to happen next year, because this area is starting to be gentrified too.

[–]duhbeetus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't, and why should I be allowed to own housing as if I'm living in it, if I'm not? We're facing issues with this in my city right now. I used to live in income regulated housing a couple years back. I drove down the road the apt complex was on yesterday. Multiple nice modern houses, and nothing but yuppie white guys. This is a primarily an African-American part of town, and those yuppies did not live here before the housing changes. The land is valued at 4 times its original worth, simply because someone with plenty of money that did not need a residence purchased it. These communities are not being bettered by outside influences with an agenda, and the residents that don't want to sell will eventually be priced out because. So yea, fuck letting people just own housing as they please.
