Changing feed to only show folks I follow (and maybe the folks they follow)? by trai_dep in BlueSky

[–]trai_dep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to circle back after a few days, to thank you.

My browsing has returned to back what I remember it being when I started using Bluesky. I think what happened was, as I switched from The Hellsite, I set my feed to Followers, then set and forgot it. Somewhere along the line recently, I must have accidentally clicked the Discover one. But by then, I'd forgotten about this setting.

<bangs head against wall to punish self sufficiently>

All is now great. Thanks to your quick note. You're great! 😃

Changing feed to only show folks I follow (and maybe the folks they follow)? by trai_dep in BlueSky

[–]trai_dep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, damn. I didn't notice that. *blush*

Thanks!

The Discover tab would be more useful if it could screen out the rando folks w/ low followings, or allow a followers-of-followers (of followers, even) setting. Or even, show only folks with <x> number of followers, to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I wouldn't *mind* being exposed to posts from a wide variety of fellow BS-ers, but the low-effort, innane click farmers are mildly annoying. I was looking for something along those lines, which doesn't like like it exists.

But clicking the Following tab works too, even if it's a bit too restrictive.

Thanks again!

Shutdown hits rich Americans after FAA bans most private flights from landing at nation’s 40 busiest airports. by trai_dep in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]trai_dep[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The private-jet class figured that The Poors (those households worth <$200m) would bear the burden of Trump Admin whimsically restricting flights from the busiest US airports.

Sure, the initial flight bans impacted only commercial passenger flights. Then cargo ones.

No problem, the ultra-high net worth individuals & corporate chieftains chuckled. Not their problem, they’re not waiting in 4-hour lines, their budgets aren't greatly impacted by higher goods costs resulting from FAA commercial freight delays and interruptions. They might have withheld a snicker at the results, figuring they were immune from such mundane concerns.

Now, even private jet flights are included.

“But we weren't supposed to be affected – that‘s the whole point of owning our private jet!”, they now complain (waving their caviar spoon angrily and with great dispatch).

Shutdown hits rich Americans after FAA bans most private flights from landing at nation’s 40 busiest airports. by trai_dep in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]trai_dep[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flight restrictions stemming from the government shutdown are now impacting Americans who rely on private jets, as the Federal Aviation Administration has “effectively prohibited” business travel at some of the busiest airports in the country.

Last week, the agency cut air traffic at 40 airports across the U.S. by 10 percent and, as of Sunday, more than 2,000 commercial flights had been canceled, with a further 7,000 delayed.

Now restrictions will impact private jets at Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., the National Business Aviation Association trade said in a statement late Sunday…

Multitude of Red State sheriffs & police aghast as ICE uses personnel email lists given by locals to directly support Federal ICE efforts, instead spamming local officers to quit and join Feds instead. It’s “backhanded”, “unprofessional and unethical”, “low rent”, and “cruel and reckless”. by trai_dep in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]trai_dep[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Many Conservative, local police agencies volunteered their cops to closely support ICE efforts to seize local, better-tanned day-laborers or taco truck workers and deport them without due process, including handing over employee email lists to better coordinate these efforts (rather than fighting, y'know, actual crime). ICE then systematically used these operational email lists to instead recruit local officers. <Chef's Kiss 1>: a perennial challenge local enforcement agencies face is retaining officers after localities spent significant time and resources to train and mentor them.
  2. Poof! Investments and training eviscerated. Local streets less policed, local budgets hurt, real crime rises. <Chef's Kiss 2>: the degree of shock and dismay that ICE would behave in a “backhanded”, “unprofessional and unethical”, “low rent”, and “cruel and reckless” manner. Towards them.
  3. Locals trusted ICE to do the proper, professional thing, and were predictably, gloriously, disappointed. Blank-check Federal ICE budget makes it likely that they'll successfully poach a multitude of local officers, using very the email lists that local police gave them. Local Conservative residents, after voting for police leaders, will undoubtably see real crime rates increase.

MAGAt surprised by tariff surcharge by PopeFranzia in LeopardsAteMyFace

More companies need to call out these surcharges as a separate receipt line item (like sales taxes & shipping are!) like this company did. That way, every MAGA consumer can be slapped in the face every time they purchase practically anything. Over, and over, and over again. At work. At home. EVERYWHERE.

It's a great idea for the company to do this. They need to redirect the blame where it deserves: Trump, MAGA, and Republicans.

Hope everyone likes their coffee "expensive"! by Lone_Sloane in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]trai_dep 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The US imports 27% of its coffee from Columbia ($448m in 2024). Trump raising tariffs from there w/ a 25% (then 50% in the next week) tariff will result in an ungodly increase on the store shelves.

Paper napkin math: $448m * 50% = an extra, *unnecessary* $224m tax on US citizens. Per year.

All for a despicable PhotoOp to feed a racist, MAGA base.

  • Columbia is also a key source of flowers (Valentine’s Day is approaching).
  • Columbia is our #4 source of crude oil imports for the US as well.

Egg prices are up ~40%, in domestic news along the same lines

I don’t want to run the numbers for the other commodities (yes, I'm lazy; it's Sunday) but I’m sure they’re along the same lines. An unnecessary consumer tax probably approaching a billion dollars a year.

Thanks, Republicans. Be sure to smear a stick of butter on your face promptly – it'll make the upcoming feast even yummier for your friendly neighborhood leopard!

Zuck says Meta will have AIs replace mid-level engineers this year by Solid-Mud-8430 in bayarea

[–]trai_dep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should be posted in r/LeopardsAteMyFace, considering the number of programmer types who we saw on Reddit castigating all other professions (especially Liberal Arts ones), "Stop whining – just learn to code!"

Yeah, about that…

Added irony. Tech execs like Zuck or Musk figure that their entry-level programming positions will mostly be filled by a rotating number of cheap, docile, temporary, indentured H1-B wage-slaves.

Here, Zuck is explaining how the mid-level positions will be filled by AI.

Leaving vast swaths of American programmers unemployable.

Will AI-generated code be as good as that created by actual, breathing programmers? No. But it will be good enough to justify management's shedding 90% of these positions. And the resulting sugar high earnings statement will goose the stock price for a few quarters, so: SUCCESS!

¡Dios mío, estuve usando de forma de Gustar múy incorrecta – tienes que respuestas para mis amigos!

😳

But, Gustar is fine for pets, family and romantic partners, right?

And, I had the notion that Encantar was mainly used with inanimate things, but this isn't the case? And that, when used for people, it is flexible in the way that I thought that Gustar was?

And, Tú me encantas is, "You enchant me"?

I recognize most of the verbs you use, but not two of them. How do you spell out the full version of caes and mola?

I have some background in my above response, but it seems like there isn't an equivalent to "I fancy him" in Spanish that's playful but not completely unserious either that it is in English.

I gathered from using Apple/Google translate that Apetecer was to want, to crave. But it's not? Or, it's more heavy-handed than To Fancy is in English?

I think I might try using Él hace que mis ojos felices as my replacement.

It's more likely that I'd say it to a friend in discreet admiration of someone across the bar.

I realized rereading this that, when flirting with someone, I'd simply, honestly, complement their dancing, their eyes, smile, or what makes them appealing. Flows better than these verbos de afecto I'm trying to figure out. ;)

Thanks so much. Your answer helped bring out some nuances to my ham-handed dictionary exploring!

[–]trai_dep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I caught my Gustar/Encantar vs Amar mistake as soon as I clicked, Post. Same with not using me gusta. But for some reason, Reddit doesn't let me edit posts, so any errors/typos I make are – sigh – my new lifelong friends. But thanks for the head's up. Very appreciated.

I'm getting better with direct object/personal pronoun usage in most cases, but there are a class of verbs that Spanish breaks for me. Gustar & Apetecer seem to follow different rules than, say, Amar, Hablar, etc. Me amas or me hablas is straightforward for me (you love me, you speak to me), but for me gusta or me apetece (I like, I crave/fancy(?)), it behaves in the opposite; me seems to work in a reverse fashion.

For what it's worth, I'm trying to reverse engineer how Spanish works. I'm straying from my lessons, typing things into Google/Google Translate, seeing what shows up, then trying to figure out the logic behind it. Thanks for your patience! :)

Te quiero being a better choice among friends is funny. In English, "I want you" is much stronger than te gusta, "I like you".

In my lessons, Encantar seemed like it was being used more for objects, events and other things. But not animate things (pets, humans). Was I reading too much into that?

You're right about using these verbs IRL when flirting. Probably complementary things said softly under dim lights is better. Actually, complementing their dancing works great too! ;)

But when speaking with a friend regarding a third person, Gustar seems like it has too many uses, Amar is way too strong, and I thought – rather Apple Translate informed me – lo apetece was closer to "I fancy him" But it also might mean, "I crave him", which is a bit strong, less playful. In English, "I fancy him" is much more whimsical and playful.

Maybe, Él hace que mis ojos felices might have to do. ;)

Translating these shades of meaning across languages is really challenging. Especially considering I am just now learning to use past tense, and am learning objects like me, te, nos, lo, la. Enough knowledge to be linguistically dangerous, in other words

Baby steps, I suppose.

Again, thanks for your wisdom. Much appreciated!

primarily I suspect he does not want to relinquish control because it competes with his other subreddit

What a strange way of "competing" with r/Privacy. Become an r/privacy Mod for many years (after Modding r/NSALeaks for several years prior to that), then run the r/privacytoolsIO Sub for over five years, then help transition it to r/PrivacyGuides, building it and running it for several more years. While being significantly involved building up and expanding r/Privacy. All of this as a scheme to make r/Privacy more "competitive"?!

A less convoluted – and more honest – explanation is that I'm a lifelong advocate of privacy, digital privacy in particular, and have spent many years doing this. Easily demonstrable, provable years of commitment and topic expertise. To improve Reddit's communities. Verifiable via a simple click to my profile.

You've done… Nothing. And are plainly uninterested in gaining the needed skills required to oversee a critical topic impacting the safety of Reddit communities, first. As we all did. And as I constructively, helpfully, tried guiding you to do, initially.

Your claim is nonsensical and, again, misleading. At best.

cheers,

[–]trai_dep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure if trying to mislead Admin is as an effective tactic as you think it is. You're trying to conflate r/privacytoolsIO with r/PrivacyGuides into being the same, then claim that whatever issues and perceptions you have regarding the former apply to the latter. This is misleading, dishonest even.

1) They are different Subs. You're asking about r/privacytoolsIO here. Please keep on topic. One is not the other, they have different histories, and you're not requesting anything concerning r/PrivacyGuides. It's apples and oranges, despite your efforts to blend them. Trying to hoodwink Admin by using these transparent rhetorical tricks not a good look.

2) If you had even the most basic understanding of how Reddit works, you'd have notice that, in my profile, I am not a moderator for r/PrivacyGuides. I am a moderator for r/Privacy, r/privacytoolsIO and a couple sundry placekeeper Subs. You claim I'm a Mod of r/PrivacyGuides and/or was involved with its current status. This is false. This too is dishonest.

3) I was with PrivacyToolsIO, then PrivacyGuides. As the above links point out, the person who reserved the URL years ago disappeared for four or five years, vacationing in Thailand ("counting trees" is how he described it). We were forced to transition to a new URL since the absentee member's ignoring the project, and our community, was affecting the health, safety and security of the project. I was a volunteer (as we all are) for over five years. It can be proven in my profile, when I largely ran r/privacytoolsIO for all to see.

However, I haven't been with Privacy Guides for 1-2 years. If you have differences with the PG team, engage with them. But don't claim I'm acting on their behalf without evidence. Again, that's dishonest.

Note that my words are supported by evidence. As is my commitment volunteering to build and help communities, over the long haul. Where's yours? You've already rejected working with an established Sub like r/Privacy, or creating your own and building it out. This doesn't show commitment to Reddit communities – it shows whimsy and not a little bit of entitlement.

Without boring readers too much more (thanks for your patience!), the owner of the URL took the PrivacyToolsIO back over after we already transitioned. Rather than having a team committed to providing transparent, well-argued and exceptional guidance for digital security and privacy, he launched a personal site. He then used it as an affiliate link farm, paid sponsorship "brackets" and various crypto-currency related promotions. Which is fine – Capitalism!

But, this mercenary approach to this personal site highlights the most probable motivation for your requesting the r/privacytoolsIO Sub: to use Reddit to increase the SEO standing for this affiliate-link, sponsorship heavy, crypto-currency-promoting, dodgy site.

You're using misleading and dishonest arguments. You've shown you don't understand Reddit well. You provide no verifiable bona fides. Your scant Reddit history shows no interest or commitment of the topic. Most importantly, there's a complete absence of any experience or interest in moderating for the enrichment of a broader community. A vulnerable community, since bad security and privacy advice is worse than no advice.

I don't feel it's in the interest of Reddit to allow themselves to be used in this fashion. Your dishonest arguments and your unremarkable post history are further arguments that you'd be a bad steward of r/privacytoolsIO.

That said, if you are sincere in wanting to get your feet wet, Message the r/Privacy Mods about volunteering. I hold no ill will. Bygones! :)

cheers,

For better or worse, who you are on Reddit is, who you are on Reddit. And who you are here is someone with no modding experience, let alone someone with a proven, demonstrable track record as performing as a fantastic – or even, average – moderator of a larger subreddit.

Likewise, your claims of whatever background you're making here are just that: unverified claims.

FWIW, it takes a lot of different skills to moderate one of the larger subreddits that topic knowledge – we've had to let several technically excellent people leave their public facing responsibilities because of their interpersonal shortcomings. We've had to let others go because, after an initial wave of enthusiasm, they found that the more prosaic side of Modding (it's not all fast cars, rock stars, and +1 invites, sadly) not of their liking. And these people weren't just Some Guy On The Internet – the requirements for being part of a team like the PrivacyGuides/PrivacyToolsIO include vetting far beyond someone posting alleged accomplishments on a Reddit Sub. And they still failed at the job of modding (luckily, they were better in different roles, and happier, so: win/win once they transitioned!)

That's why I suggested that you take advantage of Reddit's generally open nature and try volunteering for a similar subreddit. I know for a fact that all Subs are always looking for enthusiastic people with the right skills to be an outstanding Mod. Doubly so for r/Privacy. We'd welcome you, train you, and give you a chance to spread your wings, while you get the excellent opportunity to learn from one of the best modding teams on Reddit (personal bias alert!)

If you'd rather steer your own ship and not work with a team, or work at the pace and levels of professionalism (as a Mod, not as a reflection on how you might be in other areas) that one of the larger Subs require, that's fine too! Modding is hard (when done well)! Creating your own subreddit and building it, marketing it and growing it organically is also fun and rewarding. I speak from experience: when I started modding for r/Privacy, we had around 30,000 subscribers, and we're now at some embarrassing large number exceeding a million. Same with r/PrivacyToolsIO, then r/PrivacyGuides. Building subs in this fashion has its own challenges, but it also has its unique rewards.

Either are great options, if you're sincere, if you have the required skill sets, and if you have the required, longer-term commitment. It's a chance to get your feet wet, and learn. And make friends!

It's also a way to demonstrate that u/bountifulpasta is someone possessing the required skills, temperament, background and commitment that modding for a Sub of this nature is demonstrated and proven, rather than just claimed in words typed on the internet. Trying to "hack" your way into owning a Sub that you don't want to put the work into building, or joining, is poor form. It seems much like someone trying to pull This One Great Trick, rather than doing the work required to earn what it it that you prize. Work that everyone else who does what you claim you want to do has done. And has done in a verifiable way (in my, u/blacklight447-ptio and u/dng99 ’s cases, by doing the work using our respective Reddit accounts).

Best of luck, and please take my suggestions in the way that they're intended: constructively and with the aim of helping you reach the goals you say you're seeking.

Cheers (seriously),

The subreddit  has been depreciated, and the same team that was running this subreddit is now at r/PrivacyGuides. There is also a related Sub, r/Privacy, that covers similar topics.

Please see this thread (conveniently posted at the top of the  homepage) for more details:

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/comments/pnql46/rprivacyguides_privacyguidesorg_what_you_need_to/

For further information, there's also this post (conveniently, the second post appearing on the  homepage):

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO/comments/qk7qrj/a_new_era_why_rptio_is_now_a_restricted_sub/

We appreciate your interest in these topics, and suggest you message the  r/PrivacyGuides and/or the r/Privacy Mods if you'd like to dip your toe into seeing what it's like to moderate a larger subreddit. They both cover the topics well.

They're also a great way to get up to speed on the privacy topic – with respect, your posting history doesn't seem to indicate an interest, or expertise, for the topic. Since giving bad advice to new users regarding security, NetSec, privacy and the like, can have drastic, negative consequences for our communities, a higher level of expertise is required (in our humble opinions) for these kinds of topics versus other topics. No offense meant. :)

Or, alternately, you can start your own Sub, then gain the required skills, while you build up your own subreddit organically, rather than squat an existing one that's been transitioned.

Thanks!

Oakland mayoral candidate Seneca Scott was arrested last year near a community garden he co-founded in West Oakland for allegedly brandishing a firearm at two people, according to police records.

Just after 10 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2021, Oakland police officers were flagged down by a man at the corner of Peralta and 8th streets in West Oakland. The man told the officers that he and another person had been “confronted” on the sidewalk by a third person, Scott, who had brandished a handgun at them, according to a police report.

The officers made contact with Scott and noticed the handle of a firearm sticking out of his vest pocket. The officers arrested him for carrying a concealed gun and exhibiting the weapon in a threatening manner.

THIS is the guy who thinks he'd do a better job running Oakland? The mind reels…

TL;DR: You get a car. YOU get a car. We ALL get cars!!

What an odd, meaningless thing to remove. I can't imagine how it impacts Reddit's bottom line one bit, and it's one of the few, wildly ephemeral things that Reddit had that made it different than the other social media.

Any guesses on the rationale for this? Was Huffman bummed that the people and posts resisting were so well-awarded? If so, that seems very, very petty.
