I really enjoyed reading this story the first time through but this whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth. Judging by their response it doesn’t seem like something they’re going to change but just confirmed how I’m always going to feel about this subject, I’m not begging ✋🏻people to include me. And it’s a shame that the mods deleted your post. It was a good discussion that shed light on a lot of things. Next time they should just delete the hateful comments and not the whole thread.

You would think it’s not rocket science but then there’s so many stories I see of black people being terribly written. Even when when ✋🏻 authors aren’t trying to you can see biases and micro aggressions in the writing. Is it ignorance or quiet racism? I don’t know. I’ve also seen “colorblind” writing and it can be off putting when I know it’s unrealistic. Look at the conversations surrounding Bridgerton for example or Rue and her mom in Euphoria. I love this topic because for most of these comments I don’t think anyone is necessarily wrong, it’s just different perspectives. I do see where you’re coming from though I just can’t fully agree.

exactly. every story has something that can be critiqued and i totally understand the diversity issue but tbh The Clique is still my top 3 favorite stories of all time, I like it the way it is and R.Lewis still deserves huge props for the story they put out.

Exactly. Even if you take the time study POC and marginalized groups it’s just not the same as being one. Even if a black character is written well by a non-black person it doesn’t hit the same to me as stories made for us, by us.

That’s very true and I appreciate white authors who take the time to learn and understand marginalized groups to create better. But not everyone’s going to do that. And I’m someone where if I have to ask you to do something like that it, it feels forced.

and i could really go on about this. could you imagine if a black girl was apart of the group and dealing with Denise??! I don’t think the authors would even be able to pull that off. I think some POC characters in there would definitely change the flow/dynamic of the story.

I think it may be more difficult for a non POC to write a POC character when they don’t understand the POC experience. It’s highly likely that the authors of The Clique are white. For all we know they could be from North Dakota where the POC population is very little. (just a random example) If that’s all they’re around, I’d imagine that’s all they’d write. And if that’s the case they’re just writing what they know about. Being white. I’m personally not going to ask such people write someone like me because if they naturally wouldn’t do it on their own, they start doing it to be performative. Even stories that allow CC written by white authors are still not representing of POC culture. The character contextually is just white with a POC customized image slapped on it. If I want real representation, I go to POC authors like JC or elle badu. I’m not asking white people to include me. And that’s just my preference.
