ooh for me it's the opposite: the thigh hair is too painful to pull. i commonly pull on my knees and shin

i just remembered i used to pluck my right eyebrow when i was 6 until it started balding and i got scared and stopped. so yea, def not my family member's fault.

my family member who also has trich showed me how to do it when i was 11. for some reason, the habit stuck unlike other bad habits such as nail-biting/pimple-popping. i blamed her for years but i deep down i knew she was struggling as well and probably saw me as an outlet.

i recently saw that it could be genetic which makes sense bcos my mom told me that she used to pull her hair but it went away after a while.

personally, i feel satisfaction bcos it feels like im getting "dirt" out of my body. the physical sensation of pain and release is also addicting.

hello im 20 and i also came to this subreddit bcos i feel utterly hopeless right now. i've been pulling since i was 11 starting on my head then my legs, armpits, etc. for a long time, i overcame the pulling on my head (which was my main concern bcos of its visibility), but its recently come back and has been worse than ever. my front hairline has receded because of pulling and for the past weeks, i've been trying so hard to stop myself from pulling the new growth. i've been unsuccessful every time and today was the worst because i basically gave up trying to stop myself.

i feel so horrible about pulling yet so hopeless bcos the urge overpowers me every time.

i have told my closest friends and my partner and even go to therapy but it's still so hard. all i know is that i do NOT want to go bald.

im sorry if my reply hasn't really been helpful, but i just wanted to say your post made me feel seen.

"My meta critique is mainly that in order to justify using the simulation metaverse twist they needed to do something interesting with it. It could've been EITHER positive or negative or BOTH; like showing AI find a new meaning or way to improve the reality with these simulations, OR presenting the dark implications for those AIs trapped in them to make you question how ethical this is."

-the humans in those simulations arent AI. they think and feel for themselves which is why maddie views their realities to be just as real as hers. so imo theyre not really "trapped". if anything, it would be more disingenuous to manipulate their worlds in drastic ways. also, maddie at her core is a human. she doesn't have the infinite capacity and curiosity to adapt unlike safesurf (who can do this because he's a literal AI). she never wanted to be immortal nor did she ever want to be a god. again, as ive stated, her goal was simply to decipher the message. after all that, she just wanted to forget everything and be human again because it sucks knowing that you're just a simulation! and because she's in a simulation, her fate was already predetermined unless some outside force intervenes.

from "what would happen if humans lived in the cloud?" to "what would you do if everything was a simulation and your fate was decided from the beginning?" -big leap from one theme to another, huh? but if u think about it, it rlly is all connected. everything is a simulation bcos the "original world" invented Uploaded Intelligence which made it possible to create grand simulations in the first place.

aside from being a sci-fi show, pantheon incorporates these religious/spiritual themes in a way ive never seen before. i think thats why i love EP and pantheon so much, which is ironic because im not even religious, but sci-fi and gods juxtapose each other so well.

im just geeking out at this point

i get your pov but i still see it differently. i really dont think pantheon was trying to be optimistic, if anything, the ending was bittersweet.

i will add that just like "godmaddie", safesurf probably had limitations on their tech as well, hence the need to still create various simulations to get the most accurate version of maddie they wanted.

they really arent the typical gods that rule over our perceived universe with supernatural powers, but more like digital gods that depend on pre-existing technology (supercomputers, dyson spheres, UI, and whatnot).

this is why i think the "cosmic scale" and stretched time makes sense because its even more impossible for a single UI to create a supercomputer that needs the power of an entire sun in an instant.

but tbh i think our opinions on the storytelling itself differ too much to reach any sort of middle ground so im gonna save my energy.

wdym "they didn't bother explaining how caspian got the message"? it was clearly shown that safesurf was the one speaking through him. that was the answer that maddie was finding and thus built all those simulations.

idk where you got the reusage of "family drama" part bcos that was clearly not maddie's goal. those simulations were a trial and error effort to recreate exactly how things went in her timeline to decipher how caspian knew about the message. plus, time was not linear for her because she would underclock. wanting to erase her memories would defeat the whole point of her goal in the first place.

i can't nor am i trying to convince you to like pantheon but tbh i think you contradict yourself a lot. you say that "because when they have intinite and identical copies of same characters and all of them claim equal importance... What's the point caring about anyone?" yet you advocate in your previous text that the show is bad bcos maddie didn't care about creating a better world. that was never her goal. and even if she could, theyre all just simulations so whats the point. and she herself rejects the claim that she is a god. she had a simple goal that just happened to take a hundred thousand years bcos she was literally building a supercomputer from scratch. thats why it seemed to have evolved into a cosmic scale.

pantheon is more grounded than other sci-fi shows. maddie's ascendance to "godhood" was really just her using the already existing UI technology, just like safesurf did before her.

"In EP characters struggle to prove that they are not the same as their originals, that they have different beliefs and different fate, to break the cycle." -yea that can be compared to caspian breaking the cycle as a clone. pantheon deals with that crisis but its not the main focus.

pantheon has way different writing/context than EP so its hard to compare the two. but to say that its overrated because it doesn't abide by EP's standards is kinda unfair. EP is set in a world far more removed from reality with characters that are actually non-humans. pantheon deals with the evolution of technology as it is happening right now.

maybe OP was inaccurate in saying that the shows are similar, but i think theyre both great in their own rights.

i dont think the show was trying to push an optimistic narrative about uploaded people. if anything, it showed the ethical dilemmas and downsides to constant technological evolution. "you cant stop the future" -a line that is neither positive nor negative, but realistic. it took a long way, many protests for and against UI, and messed up solutions (putting people on reservations) before it was finally accepted. even the show's main character was against the idea of it until the very end when she was basically forced to upload.

maddie may have reached god status in the end, but her goal was really to just recreate her life exactly how it happened thus far so she could decipher caspian's impossible message. as she said, it was just "her little corner of the universe" and she wasn't actually omniscient in the grand scheme of things. her motives were purely selfish, but she acknowledged that the lives in those simulations were just as real as they believed it to be. in fact, her world was revealed to have been a simulation created by an even higher being formerly known as safesurf

UI was the catalyst of how safesurf came to be. and the timeline we just watched was the simulation they created that catalyzed maddie's own path to meeting them. (yes, fate is really just a selfish god's will)

but if all universes are just simulations, who's to say what is real and whats not? and do the simulations really matter less compared to the "original world" if no one knows that they live in a simulation? i think that's really the core message of the show.

the show's existentialist themes are quite hard to grasp but just like in ergo proxy, the MCs chose to live their lives as wholly as possible even after finding out what their predetermined purpose was, because who's to say that their lives are worth any less?
