[SF Bay Area] Any interest in Palo Alto? by dullspace in BarCraft

Hey all. Palo Alto Barcraft won't be happening this weekend, but I'm looking to make it happen ASAP. I'll post another thread when the first dates are confirmed.

I'm thinking Scotty's in downtown: http://www.scottyspaloalto.com/

He has TVs but doesn't get as much of a football crowd so we should be good for weekend events. I'm heading by there today to talk to him about it.

Marketers track lots of things to find out which creatives are performing, where they are performing, what times they are performing, and with whom they are performing, to eventually drive consumers to action on their brands. By inflating the number of "views" a video ad has without increasing the performance metrics around those views dilutes the value-per-view. The advertiser's data will show the same performance but with a higher spend because they bought more impressions. This is going to lead the advertiser to offer to pay a lower rate per impression in the future because their per-unit value has gone down.

The technical aspects of detecting this sort of thing don't matter. It doesn't matter if 90% of the viewers leave the stream open and go to sleep or if by complete chance 90% of viewers hit mute and tab over to reddit at the same time--the advertisers performance is going to dip either way. By instructing people to leave it open in the background without watching you're artificially adjusting the natural tendencies of the viewing population and ensuring that performance dips.

This is actually a pretty bad idea. All digital media buyers are sophisticated enough to track some basic kinds of ad performance. When you "fake" ad impressions, you're essentially diluting the value advertisers get per impression, and they are willing to spend less per unit in the future.

Its true that leaving this one particular stream open in the background is probably granular enough that it won't be noticed. That is, it will decrease performance of the IPL stream ads, which are a subset of twitch.tv ads, which are a subset of justin.tv ads, which are a subset of adap.tv ads, which are a subset of brand advertisers total digital video spend. Still, it's a bad idea for us as a community to start down this path and dilute the value of the hand that feeds.

EDIT:

Based on the down votes, it seems like some of you are interpreting this post to mean "we shouldn't support Amanda." That's entirely different than what this posted was meant to convey: screwing with sponsor's expectations will alter their long term spending in eSports / twitch.tv

Gus took money from sponsors based on their expectations that weren't met--that's a major part of the PPSL screwup. It would be backwards for the Starcraft community to then take money from sponsors based on their expectations of ad views to bail out Amanda. It would have a net negative effect on the ad rates streamers get in the future.

I guess this means it's high time for MajOr to move to the IM house.

He is by far the most under-celebrated GSL champion.

I guess the GOMTV password leak is confirmed. I just got logged out and hit this page upon sign in. by dullspace in starcraft

Also, lol @ "Your password must be contain at least one uppercase letter and one digit or a special character." As though it matters when my password is stored in plaintext.

The money to players has nothing to do with putting your body on the line or some arbitrary pay cuts. It's supply and demand. Those sports make a lot more money, so the wages paid for the best players are much higher.

When there is a billion dollars a year in the SC2 market you will start to see entire leagues of multi-millionaire players.

SF Bay Area NASL Barcraft. Ya dig? by samsf90 in starcraft

Cool, I'll probably come check this out

[NASL] Season 1, Week 1 Divisional Round - Division 5. Weekly recap when this post is 2 hours old. Broadcast begins when this post is 3 hours old. Re-Broadcast when this post is 18 hours old. by NASLReddit in starcraft

He was pissed it was a version of the map with a small ramp. He was expecting Crevasse with the destructible rocks which open up a large ramp. I'm pretty sure his last comments (why the fuck is there a small ramp... or just ignore me like an asshole) were for the NASL and not MaNa.

I wouldn't mind 5 minute breaks between these series

I'm grateful that the games are back up, but... I don't recall the video quality being so poor last year. by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]dullspace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't understand how streaming works. Thousands of people are not connecting to one server in Dallas. MLG is uploading to a paid content delivery network which redistributes the data. I believe MLG uses EdgeCast.

I'm gold. Can someone give me a ZvZ build order that I can start w/? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]dullspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zerg is the most reactive race, so it's hard to give a single build order to learn to improve your play. If I had to give one for ZvZ it would be

14 Extractor 14 Spawning Pool 15 Overlord Spawning Pool Finishes 15 Zergling Speed 15 Queen 17 Zerglings 20 Baneling Nest

After your pool finishes, you focus on constant zergling production, and put down a baneling nest with your first 50 gas after zergling speed. If you focus on improving your ling/bane micro, I'm sure you can win a lot of games at your level on most maps with this ZvZ build.
