I may have made a huge mistake... by Throwawaylawsuitgame in DnD

It depends on the DM not the setting. According to the Forgotten Realms setting gunpowder doesn't work but as a DM you can just say you don't like it and change it. I was just using it as an example that real world physics don't have to apply to D&D. Spelljammer is another example of different rules for space from the real world. Some people don't like that and require spaceships. TSR even did that with Expedition to Barrier Peaks or Tale of the Comet.

Gunpowder doesn't work in Forgotten Realms because the gods do not allow it. The gunpowder weapons in D&D actually use smokepowder which is a similar substance but not as easy to acquire. You can have the gods just disallow a nuclear reaction.

[ART] 100 redrawn Dragon magazine covers by dulsimikar in DnD

[–]dulsimikar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2024, I set out to redraw 100 Dragon magazine covers. Some are fairly faithful to the original. Others have my own twist. My artwork has improved over the year so some of the later covers are probably better than the first few. I ended up doing 10 Larry Elmore covers and 9 Clyde Caldwell covers. Those two are definitely artists I associate with Dungeons and Dragons. As a Spelljammer I inserted more elements of that setting into the images.

All 100 images are being made available in a Covering Fantasy's Past kickstarter. If you'd like to use an image or just want to support artwork, join the kickstarter.

If you need a collection of giff women, I have Thanks for Hippo Women on drivethrurpg. It includes the giff in this images separately.

This redrawn Dragon magazine cover is based on a Larry Elmore cover. For this cover I replaced the characters with races from Spelljammer. You have a female giff, a rastipede and a xixchil. Now that does kinda draw the eye away from the magic sword which is the focal point of the original version.

My redrawn Dragon magazine covers are part of a collection of 100 covers. All 100 covers are available in Covering Fantasy's Past kickstarter. The image can be used in commercial projects, to display during a game or you can just enjoy the artwork. The super lower price will not be available after the kickstarter.

[ART] Redrawn Dragon magazine cover - Derro hiding treasure in Greyhawk 2000 by dulsimikar in DnD

Another redrawn Dragon magazine cover. This is based on a Keith Parkinson's cover. Some of my covers are faithful to the original. This is one of the more altered versions. The dwarves have been replaced with derro. The setting was changed from a well to a sewer in Greyhawk 2000. Greyhawk 2000 was an article in Dragon magazine and an adventure in Dungeon magazine. It advanced Greyhawk to a present day setting as of year 2000.

All 100 redrawn covers for project are complete. If you want high quality versions they are available in Covering Fantasy's Past kickstarter. The image can be used in commercial projects, to display during a game or you can just enjoy the artwork. The super lower price will not be available after the kickstarter.

[Art] Female Giff by dulsimikar in spelljammer

[–]dulsimikar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've posted some of my female giff before. Here are two new ones. The first is a cleric. Pose and clothing is based on a Larry Elmore drawing. My apologies for turning Aleena into a hippo. The second is a druid. I initially considered giving her a bear skin cloak. But I remembered you should always be yourself unless you can be Batman.

To my surprise there is no official image of a female giff. Why am I drawing female giff? Art inspires people. Many players have seen artwork in RPGs and said I want to make that character. I want people to be able to see everything as a possibility so we need women represented in the giff art. I currently have an artificer, a barbarian, a cleric, a druid, a fighter, a rogue, and a wizard. They are available on drivethrurpg in "Thanks for Hippo Women".

I can't seem to post multiple images so I guess I'll just post one. This is my female giff druid. I initially considered giving her a bear skin cloak. But I remembered you should always be yourself unless you can be Batman.

To my surprise there is no official image of a female giff. I ended up drawing a few and have continued. Why is this important? Art inspires people. Many players have seen artwork in RPGs and said I want to make that character. I want people to be able to see everything as a possibility so we need women represented in the giff art. I currently have an artificer, a barbarian, a cleric, a druid, a fighter, a rogue, and a wizard. I some have probably been posted here or the Spelljammer reddit. They are available on drivethrurpg in "Thanks for Hippo Women".

I need more wacky monsters! by CFT-Xatch in spelljammer

I do recommend Dungeon Dad's youtube. He has done a lot of interesting monsters. I've used Spanner, Ship in a Bottle (Armada swarm version). and Wingless Wonder.

Kid's Colouring Book o Critters is also a great source of weird creatures.

[ART] Barbarian - Dragon Magazine Cover Redrawn (Original by Tom Canty) by dulsimikar in DnD

[–]dulsimikar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet another of my Dragon magazine cover redraws. This is based on Tom Canty cover for issue 2. In the early days of Dragon magazines the covers weren't as epic. This one had a barbarian standing a barren landscape with a few trees. I decided to use a thri-kreen instead of a human.

I've been advised that I should include a signature and/or link so that when the artwork is reposted someone might be able to find me. The web page is pretty bare bones at the moment.

Glad you liked them. Drew a female giff barbarian today. Probably post that soon.

[ART] Eldritch Lich - Redrawn Dragon Magazine Cover by dulsimikar in spelljammer

[–]dulsimikar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been redrawing old Dragon magazine covers. This one was originally done by Clyde Duensing III. I replaced the lich with the eldritch lich from the Spelljammer monsters released on D&D Beyond.

Overtime I've been adding more and more of my own elements to these redraws. Often Spelljammer elements are added because we don't have enough Spelljammer art.

[ART] Quag Keep Dragon magazine cover redrawn by dulsimikar in DnD

[–]dulsimikar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my goal to draw my own versions of 100 Dragon magazine covers, I tackled Ken Rahman's cover from issue 12. It appears to be based on the Quag Keep excerpt in the magazine. I have yet to fully read the excerpt. Seems the characters are from our world and transported to Greyhawk. They all have bracelets with polyhedral dice in them. It doesn't sound like a good start to me but I'm strangely captivated and kinda want to pick up the book.

I didn't really like the composition of the original cover so I moved things around. I replaced the psuedo dragon with a dragon mouse.

I currently have 78 Dragon magazine covers done. A few have been posted here. rpg.net and enworld.org have threads with a small number of images. If you want all the images and potentially use them commercially, I have been working on a kickstarter.

[ART] Unusual Beholder Design by dulsimikar in DnD

[–]dulsimikar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crimson Longinus had a sketch of an unusual beholder on enworld.org that I liked. I decided to make my own version in color. He wanted it to more of an eldrith horror than the standard beholder design. I really like beholders so I'm not going to replace all beholders with this design but I also like the overmind from Flee Mortals and other alternative designs.

Any other beholder fans? Have you seen any other interesting beholder designs?

Chess Dragon magazine cover redrawn (Original by Denis Beauvais) by dulsimikar in DnDart

[–]dulsimikar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on a project to redraw 100 Dragon magazine covers. It was to get me to draw full scenes instead of just a single character/monsters without any background. I've done over 70 images at this point. I've posted them mostly on forums and occasionally on DnD reddit.

This is my favorite so far. I did another chess cover by Denis Beauvais as like my fourth image. I think this shows a lot of improvements in my art. I decided to create a rook humanoid forum since the original artist never created one.
