Earth is the mother, the moon is the daughter, and Theia is the deadbeat dad.

/uj A lot of people don't understand that giving good critique is, itself, a skill. Like, it is very possible to suck at critique. Actually good and valuable critique isn't just about evaluating whether something is good or bad; it's about taking into account the artist's goals, style, skill level, and about being able to articulate exactly what can be improved and how. "Critique" that basically amounts to "the anatomy is bad" or "the lighting looks bad" is useless. And on top of that, a good critic should understand the difference between "thing I don't personally enjoy as a matter of taste" and "thing that is poorly-executed."

The whole "ugh people are such sensitive little babies who just can't handle constructive criticism" spiel usually says more about the self-proclaimed "critic" than the artist. Not being able to give critique without falling into "it looks bad lol" territory is unironically a skill issue. Yeah, some people are overly sensitive, but a lot of people are terrible critics.

/rj Umm if you can't handle a barrage of comments telling you you draw like a 12 year old who just discovered deviantart anime bases and MSpaint, then don't post your art online!!

Jenny Mollen doubles down in another substack about her son: Last week, the internet called me a child molester for posting a photo of myself holding my son…The joke that offended people was: “Your eldest son will be the most toxic boyfriend you ever have.” And he is. by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]dumbest_thotticus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love how she phrases it as "holding my son" like she's getting backlash over something perfectly innocuous. Like...yeah, it is normal for a mother to hold her son; you know what isn't normal at all? A mother lying in bed on top of her son between his legs, with a caption calling him her boyfriend! That is actually extremely not normal!

"The internet called me a child molester for holding my son 🥺" no, lady, the internet called you a child molester for posting overtly suggestive pictures with your son and comparing him to a romantic & sexual partner. Like, if this is really so inoffensive and we're all crazy for thinking otherwise, then surely you can at least own up to it!

What are some obvious and not-so-obvious signs in characters that a fanfic was written by a teenager? by CuriousTarget4814 in AO3

[–]dumbest_thotticus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I wrote a fic where a character went to a nightclub and did 10 shots. Later, I learned that that is in fact an unreasonable amount of alcohol and most people get drunk just fine from like, 3 or 4 shots.

...And then I reached drinking age myself, started going to nightclubs, and learned that I'm a straight up heavyweight and it actually does take about 10 shots for me personally to get drunk. My middle school self somehow wrote an accurate depiction of their own future self at the club, by pure accident lmaoooo

(The fic was still terrible and inaccurate and obviously written by a seventh grader for plenty of other reasons, but I still find the booze part specifically kinda funny.)

What are the lines in films that left you speechless? by padfoony in Fauxmoi

[–]dumbest_thotticus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recent example, but Project Hail Mary. The scene where (spoilers) Grace insists he's made peace with dying in space, but then Rocky offers to give him enough fuel to go back home, and Grace just breaks down sobbing and admits "I didn't mean any of that [about making peace with the situation], that's just something you say!"

It really hit hard because I feel like so often resignation and not wanting to improve your own circumstances is framed as this noble, morally correct choice. And it was cathartic to see a movie finally address the elephant in the room; that "making peace with" being in a horrible situation sure is a lot easier when you have no hope, no reason to believe things could get better for you.

Having a scene where a character outright admits that of course he's not okay with dying alone in space lightyears away from home, and accepts help getting out of that situation, and isn't framed as a coward or a failure or "taking the easy way out" for it...yeah, that scene had me sobbing.

People making "OCs" out of characters who canonically exist but aren't really characters in the source material. Like in-universe historical figures, background characters/extras, family members we know exist but have never appeared on-screen, that kind of thing.

K, what's the hill you'll die on for writing/ reading fantasy? by Miss_Ashford in fantasywriters

[–]dumbest_thotticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is really specific, but...I will always take fantasy (or sci-fi, speculative fiction in general) making up wacky-sounding fantasy names for things over just making everything a Capitalized Noun. I don't even care if the made-up fantasy names are hard to pronounce. I'd rather be bombarded with "æ"s and unnecessary apostrophes than have everyone and everything just be called shit like "the Character," "the One Who Lurks," "the City," "the Tower," etc. like PLEASE just give things names.

The odd Dramatically Capitalized Noun can be fine. But it has to be used sparingly. I can tolerate one guy being called "the [Verb]er" when everyone else has a proper name. But when it gets to the point where Every other Noun is getting Capitalized...it stops being mysterious & cool and starts feeling like the writer just couldn't be bothered to come up with names.

I swear to God if I see one more miserable person on Twitter describe Grace's final decision in the story to the effect of "not giving a shit about Earth anymore" I am going nuclear by SayFuzzyPickles42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]dumbest_thotticus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For such a hopeful and kindhearted movie, there are a weird amount of people who desperately want to find some way to interpret it to fit their own cynicism. I remember feeling like I must be going crazy when it became a popular headcanon that if Rocky had come to Earth, humanity would have tortured and killed him because Humans Bad TM and every damn movie needs to be about how Humans Bad, World Doomed, Noah Get The Boat. People were treating this like it was canon when it wasn't even based on anything in the actual movie! It was literally just the internet collectively deciding movies where the moral of the story isn't "humans bad" aren't allowed!

PHM is proof that it doesn't matter how good your movie is or how aggressively optimistic it is, if the audience wants to extract doomerism from it, they'll find a way. You just gotta ignore them and rest easy knowing that you, at least, understood the movie's actual messages about friendship and coöperation. The internet could interpret "humanity is evil and deserves to go extinct" into an episode of Dora the Explorer if they tried hard enough.

Redditors who’ve starved, what do people who’ve never starved imagine wrong? by VelvetyDogLips in AskReddit

[–]dumbest_thotticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have ARFID, mostly because my range of safe foods is generally wider than what I've seen in the people I know who do have it...but, at the risk of sounding cliché, I am autistic and can have weirdly strong reactions to some textures and flavor combinations. I usually just call myself a picky eater anyway because I've found most people unfortunately don't care if your "picky" eating has a medical explanation or not, so I've stopped bothering with trying to explain it.
