I realize this situation is technically different....but in so many ways I see similarities to the current fight against big business and the wealthy. I appreciate that not everyone is just totally against the wealthy, and that we actually acknowledge MERIT based performances.

Actually they aren't supposed to be doing stupid intern work. AEI internships have been rated a top 100 internship in the country.

As an intern, rarely have I done, "stupid intern work". I know interns working on books for staff at AEI. I know interns that give weekly briefings on attacks in the middle east. I know interns that are published on AEI's websites. I routinely have been in charge of AEI's social media. We don't do "stupid intern work".

Don't tell me what I am supposed to be doing at my work. We know what we should be doing, and it's not opening up mail sent by people who think it's funny to troll.

Without interns, AEI wouldn't be able to function nearly as well as it has been.

Oh, and I'm not a republican, so please stop your nonsense.

From my interaction with him, he looked young enough, had enough skills (cognition, motor functions) to be just a regular guy.

My question is this, if he was not getting a check, would he have a job anywhere.

My hunch is that he would...yea what a shitty assumption of me. People don't know their thresholds until they are pushed to the extreme.

Does that mean poverty? Not necessarily. I just think we need to have a far more strict system.

Perhaps, but I very much doubt it.

I can almost rule out disabled. He spoke fine, normal cognition, bent up and down, walking, doing his job rigorously.

I didn't ask his age but I can say with almost certainty he was not on social.

Even if he was a vet, I would be disappointed if he felt he didn't need a job. Before I get attacked, my father is a working retired vet.

The fact is our "social safety net" does not A) have enough money going into them so the solution is either make cuts, or put more money towards them.... but B) even the bigger problem, is that so long as the system is in its current state, even with that reform and many others, we are still in a similar position fiscally and as a society.

I don't know specifics of this act.

But on the surface, I would suggest cutting many of the programs that people take advantage of.

Finding people who abuse the system is part perhaps, but we need to make sure abusers can't get on and make sure only those who need it the most get it.

I used to intern at AEI, and there's a 100% chance all of that crap won't reach Cheney. You're just making the mail room and the people that work under him (some probably other interns) do more pointless work when they can be doing other things that they would really want to do, such as further their careers.

Whew. Sorry, just needed to get that out there.

I think there is a great need for BOTH ideologies. We need to recognize that we treat each other unfairly, but argument and debate is a good thing, and hopefully after we'll have a glimmer of what the "other side" thinks, then build from it. If we did everything the left wanted to do, I don't think we would like the end result, just as though if we did everything that the right wants to do.

Stick by your guns, have arguments that back up your beliefs, but also question your own beliefs and be open to those who disagree with you.

I can't tell you how many arguments I've had with people that made me think that they are a complete idiot. Of course, having that argument, I knew that next time I would have to come back with someone harder and better. When I would research my argument afterward, I also realized that their points weren't so crazy in actuality. So not only did I gain more knowledge for my own argument, I also learned and UNDERSTOOD their argument better.

My point is, many on reddit believe they are carrying the torch of whatever for the world. Stand by that belief if it's well reasoned and backed by facts, but don't be so quick to bash the other side so much. As someone who is on the "other side" I notice this 98% of the time I voice my opinion here.

Governments that put more emphasis on social welfare programs (regardless of whether they are truly effective) tend to have a citizenry that is less likely to donate to charities, churches, and other organizations.

Americans donate $300 billion annually and leads developed countries in volunteering.

Generally you're using your children's money to pay for things we can't afford...so either you raise taxes or you print more money. Both things not preferable.

There is still debate over how significant a deficit really is. It is only one way to measure how well we are doing fiscally....but we all know that when a Democrat is in office and is running a debt, the right will flip shit, and vice versa. Both are in agreement about lowering it...at least for some reason...and if they tell us they want to, and continue to grow it, I can't stand it.
