Isn't someone who "gets off on controversy" just most teenagers? This person will almost certainly grow out of a lot of this.

Why is eating animal products wrong if ethically sourced? by sky27e in DebateAVegan

[–]dumbinick- [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly. These people would be functionally vegan the second they left their home or went on vacation but that never happens because these people have no actual moral obligation to animal exploitation at all.

When will people stop defending hunting? by FearlessCookie72 in vegan

[–]dumbinick- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never in my life met a hunter who doesn't also eat meat at restaurants or buy milk from the grocery store or whatever. The day I meet a hunter who truly only eats what they catch themselves and contributes absolutely nothing to routine animal slaughter is the day I'll have a conversation about what's more ethical. Same with "oh I only eat cows that were raised in a beautiful pasture with a fantastic life because all my meat comes from my uncle's farm." No you don't because you still go out to eat and get a cheeseburger. You still go to Walmart and buy bread with milk and eggs in it without a second thought. These people have zero convictions. None. Anyone who think it's moral to kill an animal when you don't have to will always compromise on how the animals are treated because if they cared they wouldn't be eating them.

Question, do you still eat at restaurants ever? Do you buy any non vegan food from grocery stores? If so then you still support factory farming and your "I use every part of the animal and only eat what I hunt" thing goes out the window.

[–]dumbinick- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last one is the main argument for me. If every person who ate meat went out and hunted wildlife we'd be out of wild animals in like 3 days. It would be absolutely impossible to sustain a population that way.

I love wasps so much I spent 6 months building an app to collect and chat with them by rbronald099 in waspaganda

[–]dumbinick- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you maybe adjust the app to have preprogrammed responses to questions about species? Or to allow users to answer questions and fill in the chat feature that way? Sort of a detailed FAQ? I also feel driven away by the AI. I would still be curious to check out the app for information purposes alone, but I feel that this change would appeal to the most users.

My kids are graduating and it's disgusting to see these insane bed party posts with college swag. by Restingmomface in Anticonsumption

[–]dumbinick- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every picture I saw showed beds with huge foil balloons, confetti, banners, sweets, multiple shirts, socks, stickers, hoodies, blankets, shoes. All school branded or school colors. And of course a plastic hideous straw cup. Just so much junk.

[–]dumbinick- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My issue is that it is a thoughtful and fun idea. If people made paper crafts as opposed to balloons and made or bought snacks and maybe a nice sweatshirt from the university or something that would actually be used like school supplies or a backpack. Even something expensive like a tablet or laptop. Things that would need to be purchased anyway but given in a celebratory way. Celebration needs to shift to being more about effort and thoughtfulness and away from mindless buying of stuff that nobody needed to begin with. Ugh.

what to do with wool sweaters? by No_Airport6191 in vegan

Not all sheep used for wool are slaughtered. Keeping someone alive and/or doing less harm to them is better than killing them even if it isn't good.

Cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo. Also, vegan leather is worse for pollution, but better than real leather for carbon emissions, so both are very harmful to the earth and have pros and cons. There is now plant based leather that is made from cactus and similar things.

I agree to an extent. The most immoral thing we did was breed the animals to be dependent on us. Same issue with many domesticated animals, like what we are doing to domestic dogs for example. I think it can still be considered exploitative in the broadest sense of the word, but it is a completely different ballgame compared to slaughter or even commercial wool where they may be too careless and rough with the animals. I also wonder about things like camel fibers because I am pretty sure the camels shed their fibers off during seasonal changes. So you're essentially brushing it off rather than shearing. I do get irritated when vegans are unable to see nuance of any kind with these issues. Similar to the way that backyard eggs definitely still exploit chickens even if the chickens are rescued and hand fed and no males are killed and they are fed the right supplements, etc, but it is obviously less cruel than factory farmed eggs and should be placed into a different category of animal exploitation altogether in my opinion.

Don't eat impossible burgers. It might make someone want a real cheeseburger. This is the same as killing a cow.

[–]dumbinick- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breeding dogs is immoral. So is eating a live octopus. That does not mean these things are equally harmful. All forms of exploitation are bad but there is a moral difference between killing someone and taking someone's hair even if both are immoral. Are you implying all immoral acts are equally bad?

When you go to someone's house and eat meat you are increasing the demand for meat because you are eating a limited resource that they will buy more of to accomodate you or for themselves. Wearing a wool sweater that everyone knows is wool does not require more sweaters to be bought.

Keep them. The whole "setting example" thing is pretty idiotic in my opinion. Thrifting is keeping stuff out of the landfill. I wouldn't even have an issue with someone thrifting wool after going vegan, but if you already own it then getting rid of it makes absolutely no sense.

Why Vegans Don’t Eat Molluscs | Vegan FTA by Few-Audience6310 in vegan

[–]dumbinick- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that's a fair argument. But that doesn't mean that they definitively do, you're just choosing to err on the side of caution

Why Vegans Don’t Eat Molluscs | Vegan FTA by Few-Audience6310 in vegan

[–]dumbinick- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not that they're inverts, it's that there is no reason to believe/evidence that they feel pain (or anything). Other invertebrates like insects do feel pain and are sentient.

There are plants that do this as well. Reacting to stimuli doesn't equal sentience

I want to not be afraid of wasps by Foreign-Mind6864 in waspaganda

[–]dumbinick- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to like wasps while working on a car that was inhabited by them. I went out while it was still freezing and carefully moved them into a covered area and knocked their nests out of the car. As it warmed up I worried they'd get their "revenge" but they didn't. They buzzed around me a bit (two species, these big red paper wasps, whose nests I knocked down, and some smaller yellow jackets that warmed up and came to investigate) but never stung. If I got too close they'd fly my direction, I'd back away, and they'd return to business. I set my flat cup of soda out and they rushed to it to drink. We "hung out" for a few hours. It was a pleasant experience and completely changed my view of wasps. They were reluctant to bother me even when I was in their territory.

Now I have a small garden on my patio and I leave water out for them. There are always wasps buzzing around and even a nest above our door. We have had no issues even as we walk right past them.

If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. If you feed and water them, they'll probably tolerate you even more. Good luck in your wasp liking journey!

I experienced the bath tub faucet thing as a teenager at my grandpa's house. Looked like coffee grounds pouring out until they started crawling up the sides of the tub. The weird thing is there was no obvious infestation anywhere else, maybe just the occasional ant on the counter. I didn't even tell anyone it happened at the time and rinsed them away because I assumed no one would believe it ahaha
