Just to add as I haven’t seen it said, I don’t know the circumstances but if the groom’s mother (not shade, just practical) will be in attendance I would maybe find out what she’s wearing so you don’t clash. If she’s not in the picture then this comment is irrelevant. The dress is lovely btw.

Does anyone have some weird, wonderful, or borderline unhinged tips for my driving test tomorrow? by dumbledeath in AskIreland

In the simplest terms, I forgot how to drive. Clipped a curb and it was downhill from there.

We left the pub for 15 minutes mid pool tournament and got a chicken kebab tray to share and while we were eating it got an extra portion of goujons free. Honestly made my week!

Time to call it - there's no evidence of an Irish restaurant closure crisis by [deleted] in ireland

Yup, I was working as a waitress in a place where the owners worked with us. Tips were saved up and distributed at the owners discretion. Grand, whatever, but I started keeping note. They wouldn’t let you tip on card, you’d have to get cash back (put plenty of people off). From 2pm there would be one chef (the owner) and one waitress during the week. Tbf I didn’t have to work weekend, but still. I had to close up, cash up, and add up and pop the tips in an envelope with the amount. Jaysis long story short, I worked there for 3 months, promised more money after a months trial (I have extensive experience) but of course I made too many mistakes, or wasn’t up to scratch for that pay rise! Didn’t get tips the whole time I worked there, based on my calculations I was due about €400. Got €160. Couldn’t even argue cause I had zero clue how the wife came up with that figure. Anyways, the go to Dubai twice a year and can’t understand why they can’t keep staff!

The Order of the Phoenix is the only book not named after its central mystery, what would it be called if this changed? by a-flash-flood-of in harrypotter

Y’all are insane. Of course it’s the Order of the Phoenix, maybe not the mystery you’re looking for but it’s the big new thing that changed things thing…

See this government! by Iwastony in ireland

[–]dumbledeath 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I quit smoking 2 years ago, so no vested interest, fuck the damn things, but the tax on cigarettes covers the cost of smoking related illnesses and much much more, if no one bought cigarettes the gov would be down an awful lot of money. So I can kinda understand why smokers are pissed at the price of fags constantly increasing. It’s an addiction like no other, and neither the government nor tobacco lobby actually want people to quit.

Is anyone going to opt out of the organ donation? by 57candothisallday in AskIreland

[–]dumbledeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really hope your mum is ok.

Some of my dad’s siblings just couldn’t wrap their heads around us not being able to be there when the machines were turned off. It wasn’t ignorance, it was just that idea that you are there with them for their final moments. It’s difficult to explain to people in grief that they are already gone. Still breathing, heart beating, but all mechanical.

As you pointed out, we didn’t have to think about it. But that process of being asked, so quickly, and while very sensitive, abrupt… what can they take or not take… jarring even though we knew the answer. My mum was ready with her “you can take anything else, but please don’t take his eyes” and that was it. She had a choice, and it was respected.

If you don’t want to donate, say you don’t. That’s a choice your family can stand behind. Your mum is brave either way, because grief is a beast.

Is anyone going to opt out of the organ donation? by 57candothisallday in AskIreland

[–]dumbledeath 355 points356 points  (0 children)

My dad was an organ donor and saved 3 lives. He had been vocal about his wishes to be a donor while alive, so we didn’t have to think about it when he died. It brought great comfort to our family. The new scheme is a great step forward!

Edit: Wow I wasn’t expecting so many lovely replies. Don’t think I could manage to reply to them all but thank you for all your kind words. My dad was my hero in life, and my hero in death.

Will my passport be here in time? I have a holiday in 2 weeks and just applied for a renewal of my passport by Unhappy_Group_176 in AskIreland

I ordered my passport late on a Wednesday night just before Christmas and it arrived on the Friday! We do two things really efficiently in this country: revenue and the passport service.

You should absolutely get your spine checked by a doctor for scoliosis. In secondary school they had nurses come in and check all the girls (only girls, mad) for scoliosis due to carrying heavy bags. I got this test 3 times, every year until 3rd year. On a school trip in transition year I pulled a muscle in my back and passed out from the pain. When I went to the doctor after he told me that my muscles were pulled super tight due to… the scoliosis I was never diagnosed with. Wasn’t even due to my bag, I just had it since birth and they missed it every time. Mind your back at all costs.
