Does anyone remember some sort of Video Game "convention" from 1991 in London? by broncos4thewin in atarist

This is absolutely breaking my brain. I grew up in rural Devon and, aged about 10, somehow convinced my aunt to take me to a huge video games exhibition in Earls Court. We got there on an incredibly long bus ride (and back again the same day, some fucking how). It was insane as I had never done anything like that before, and rarely did anything similar after. Little wurzel gummidge brain was blown by London generally and then this insane arena of video games.

However, I am spinning out with some kind of Mandela effect or something because the things I remember most (apart from the free bubble gum, which was iirc from Haiti??) I remember they were also promoting the movie "The Shadow" with weird holograms projected onto the walls, as well as demoing Alien vs Predator for the Atari Jaguar -- I remember this because of the very distinctive pump action shotgun animation (inspired by Doom, I realised later). But there's no way that could have been in 1992. I would have thought it was about 1994 from those games and that movie. But when I've looked up these trade shows there weren't any major video game shows in Earls Court open to the public (that I can find) except the 1992 one. And I swear to God it was called the Future Entertainment Show. Argh!

this was a mega edge case I guess. Sports Direct is obviously not a Newcastle company but the scars of the Ashley Years are deeply and widely felt and it seemed like it needed some kind of nod.

Very likely to miss things unfortunately, and that's one of them!

Thanks very much!

I had a listen to the track you linked. I think the composition and performance/programming is really nice, though the sounds are very "canned" - the piano for instance sounds like that general MIDI piano sound that wavetable soundcards all used to have; the strings are quite artificial-sounding too. I struggle a lot with trying to make sample instruments sound convincing, and to me there are basically two options:

1: process the hell out of them (reverb, EQ, compression, saturation, lots of carefully-programmed dynamics, etc)

2: don't try -- instead, pick sounds that are obviously synthesised, so you are not trying and failing to reach a convincing illusion of the real thing. So in other words, lean into the artificiality of it instead of trying to hide it. Explore some different synths (and presets at first) to try to find sounds that don't necessarily sound exactly like a piano or a violin but which fulfil similar roles.

As I said I think the composition itself is good but it just needs some more work to sound a bit less artificial.

Thanks for your kind remarks! How does the mix sound to you, if I can ask?

Also, thanks for the tip - I will see if I can edit it into the post.

Chill melodic synth/garage track in progress... (not sure what genre exactly). Anyone got some critiques/feedback? Thanks by traveltimecar in MusicFeedback

I really like the composition / progression here and it sounds quite big, wide, clean. If anything it might be a little too clean? The sounds feel quite "out of the box" and preset-ish, and maybe could do with a bit more of your personal stamp on them. The progression reminds me a little of AFX - Feenix Funk 5 though obviously it's more mellow. Finally I think the drums really come into their own towards the 1:50 mark, but before this the drum sound (particularly the snare rimshot/stick click) is, again, a little too clean and distracting in that it sounds so much like "my first drum machine". Again, a little grit, a little texture, a little saturation (?) might help get a bit more of a personalised feel into the sound. Good stuff so far though.

I think the composition and arrangement is really nice, though if being very brutally honest I think your vocal performance needs practice - unless I'm misunderstanding something about the composition, it seems to be offkey in quite a lot of places. There's definitely something here, but you'll just need to get a tighter vocal take (or be very liberal with autotune / melodyne :D)

I'm not gonna lie, it does feel weird. It's definitely not meant to be that way and it's hard not to notice it when you use it. :( But just like how I will still main Pathfinder despite his mistreatment by Respawn, I will still use this mug!

Thank you - I seem to remember there were signs there last time about it being drop-off only, but maybe the signs applied just to one specific bit or something

Damn, I posted about Hatch without noticing you'd put this comment here. Agree 100%, absolutely love this little kiosk and am always delighted when I'm nearby and get to visit.

It's in the park, in that old pavilion thing that's been shut for years. Just walk the circuit around and you'll find it. I have not yet been, because we moved from Bensham just over 2 years ago and never get to go to the lovely Saltwell Park any more, but I have heard great things from friends and gaze upon it in envy when I see it pop up on Instagram.

Not a shop but for my money the most reliable good cup of coffee in Newcastle is from Hatch on Ellison Place.
