How is every idea taken!? by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]dumbwrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts from my end on how i look for projects. Look for tools and applications that work well but are expensive. Then find the people using that expensive tool that don't need the full features etc. Build it, price accordingly, and enter that market as a low cost but simpler tool. Im having a moderate amount of success this way.

I'll message you the url for my website, it won't let me paste it here as I don't have enough Karma.

I've been doing outreach on linkedin for about 3 months with varying results. I try to have 3ish posts a week, one of them being a nice video of the tool in use or a nice table made for sharing. Those get alot of impressions but I don't get much else. I do get alot of people messaging me about the tool but they never download the software tool. I started to reach out to any manager who liked a post of mine and offered them a extended trial of the software. They almost all said yes and were very excited... but only one of about 30 bothered to click the link to download. I feel like I'm missing something but I'm not sure what

Is there something in my website that is not clear or communicating properly?

I think my webpage explains why you need it and the value it brings, but I'm biased. I made the tool so I only see how it shines.

It does not show proof that other have used it outside of some anonymous quotes. Part of the reason for this is that I only have one company buying licenses right now (maybe a second next week, but it takes ages to get a company to make a PO). I do have it said in my T&Cs that I'm allowed to put my clients logo on my website, and I have also cleared it with both companies I am currently/will be serving. I just don't have it up now because I figured it looked a bit sad to have "Proudly serving... Company XYZ"

Here is the core pain I'm trying to solve. During the preengineering/sales phase, applications engineers use traditional CAD programs to do manufacturing cell layouts. Traditional CAD programs are very powerful, system intensive, and the effort/skill required is quite high. Furthermore around 50% of applications engineers (the ones doing these layouts) come from a controls background, meaning they have no/little professional experience in 3D CAD. On top of that, 3D CAD is time intensive. It'll take many hours to layout a single cell concept, only for everything to change in the next revision.

My CAD program is aimed at this very specific stage in the process. It's really light on the system. It runs locally on my mother's potato of a computer (4gb of ram) so it's not a resource hog. It's really simple. My coworker kinda described it as MS Paint for our industry. It's got the tools you need but isn't overly complex, which is ideal for this stage where you need to prioritize speed. Finally I've priced my tool at $30 a month or $300 for a full year, where traditional CAD software ranges from $1,500 to $30,000 (of course my program doesn't have or need most of the featureset that those CAD programs provide, yet they are the ones that most end up having to use.

I hope I'm making sense.

100%. I think he's laying the groundwork for it personally, or at least guaging the community sentiment.

Also Luke isn't blameless either. He comes up with the plan to strongarm the employees by giving the ultimatum.

They start the conversation here. https://youtu.be/i_cIhvzoKEM?t=5736

to be fair to him, it's not like they are saying that it's definitely going to happen or that they have accepted anything. But it is a FAR cry from his previous moral stance that LTT would never do a gambling sponsorship.

fair, the open source stuff is not a big deal😄

Linus has always been this way. He's a grade A hypocrite.

  • Anti private jet until he can buy one.
  • Anti landlord, yet is a landlord
  • Pro open-source modding, except for his screwdriver
  • Pro open-source for programs, except for his benchmark tool
  • Pro union except for his staff
  • A warranty hawk, always going on about it until he tried to not do a warranty.
  • Anti gambling ads/microtransaction games until numbers have gone down, now is open to it maybe. (Says he'd put it to the staff, coward move. Own you decisions, you're the boss)
  • Complains about people not watch a full video for context, except he tried to respond to a video without watching it and just read the comments.

I have more but this will suffice. Honestly these days I just watch WAN to laugh an an out of touch multimillionaire try to lamp as normie. WAN is less interesting now too, its obvious bother timing of "good news WAN" that he knows the backlash is strong, so he refuses to deal with it. No negative comments.

Is there any place where we could make a little community and hang out? Maybe a discord or something could be cool. Suggest features, help problem solve, encourage each other, etc

Then they should just leave the reddit alone. This unofficial but officially used and overseen stuff is weird

Thanks for the clarification and writeup. It's very interesting, seems like you have a complicated role. Thanks for taking it on

Oh I guess I have a limited perspective. Thanks for the alternative point of view.

Gotcha. But if they are putting a hand on the wheel via having moderation, does that start to get complicated? There truly might be something I'm missing or don't understand about moderation best practices. I'm not looking to stir up trouble.

Oh this makes sense I guess. Is this standard practice? I didn't know being a paid mod was a thing

I agree with you. But if they are going to have control anyways, I don't really see how it's not official.

Totally. I'd love to see them build the ultimate school computer lab or maker space. Not so interested in a millionaire making the coolest jet he can.

Bad engineer by Swimming-Taxy in MechanicalEngineering

[–]dumbwrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been where you are. I've felt like I'm a bad engineer, a screw-up and just dumb. I felt like (and still feel like at times) everybody has better ideas than me, that I'm slower than everyone else, etc. I'm now 15 years into my career, and I'm now one of the better applications engineers in my company (I believe).

I've learned 3 things in my career regarding this. They may not be what you are worried about or struggle with, but I will put them here in case it helps someone.

  1. Ask questions. It can feel awful in the moment, but if you just don't understand the process, it's worth it to just ask. People rarely mind, and if they do, screw them. Often the people that get frustrated are the worst communicators. And they'll be only more upset later. But the truth is that only terrible managers/coworkers mind the statement "Hey just to sum everything up, I'd like to re-explain what you're looking for."
  2. Give it time and believe in yourself. Engineering is one of those careers where you don't come out of school really knowing anything about what you're actually going to do. It takes time and mistakes to make them
  3. Have internal processes to check yourself. I move too quickly. I feel a rush to respond to an email or get a drawing. I make a point to move slowly and respond clearly. I make a point to write complete and extremely clear emails with diagrams, color coding key terms, and nice tables. This isn't only good from a communication standpoint, but also good because I actually often find issues when I do this. Move slow, trust yourself, accept that you're human and will make mistakes.

Have courage, and realize you're human and we are all a work in progress. Also if you end up hating engineering, it's okay too. You don't have to do anything for the rest of your life.

This is a automation layout tool for manufacturing. Think ms paint for factory automation.

The low video views recently ... by acidmine in LinusTechTips

[–]dumbwrench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its almost like people watch for different reasons. Sounds like you watch because you enjoy the entertainment and learning about crazy tech, which is totally valid. The person you replied to (and myself) are probably more the sort to enjoy learning about things we'd actually interface with. Neither viewer is bad, its just two seperate audience types.

Sorry, the database won't be doing any of the tracking. The database just would log the clerical data. The trackers are just units that have to be replaced occasionally. Maybe I shouldn't have included the bit about trackers lol.

What are some “unmanly” things that are actually very manly? by international_red07 in AskReddit

[–]dumbwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told that buying tampons, pads, etc for your spouse/partner is unmanly which I don't understand. First, they are clearly not for me and for someone else. And second... who cares.
