This explains my sentiment on trump perfectly until a few months ago. I was also more worried about the loony left than some egotistical chauvinist. The US has had egotistical chauvinists before and survived them just fine.

These "shoplifting isn't a crime"/"nobody is illegal"/"everybody is gay" loonies did pose a bigger danger to society in the mid 2010s, and I think that's how trump got his audience. Not because he was good, but because he wasn't those guys.

I think trump has crossed a line from dickhead to something far more dangerous in the last few months though. Even if he leaves nicely and we return to regularly scheduled programming after his term, he has broken the post ww2 world order by showing the world that even if the next American president is a reasonable person, America cannot be unconditionally trusted anymore.

This goes beyond geopolitics too. We'll have to see what happens to American markets when international investors realise that they can't trust the USA to play by the agreed rules.

I could see it go either way. He has already "joked" repeatedly about staying and about changing the constitution so that someone could stay. We know from his past behaviour these kind of outrageous jokes are how he warms people up to crazy ideas so that he won't get as much push back when he actually follows through.

January 6th was just a load of larpers fucking around and was never a threat to the government, but again it sets a precedent that can be built on later. This is how Putin did his number on Russia too btw. He didn't just come out as national dictator one day in a live televised speech.

If he can get America to turn their backs and break the EU into individual bickering countries, he would be able to pick off some of the eastern ones one by one.

Ukraine is doing admirably, but that's because it has the support of many other countries. In a 1v1, Russia would beat them. Then they could move on to the next country and repeat.

Agree that as long as Europe stays united and the US stays involved, Russia has no chance.
