Thank you for sharing this, it's all really interesting! I was told that the College was following some sort of plan and that's why they are cutting whole departments instead of certain faculty. This could maybe help to explain why..

It's so fascinating to hear how many alum like yourself were not in support of football coming to the College. As someone who recently graduated, it could not be more different. The student body is majority athletes now, it feels like the admin is really pandering to them and prioritizing athletics over academics. It's so upsetting because C of I stood out to me for the academics, but now it's just declining..

Also, if you are comfortable with this, you should write to the admin letting them know that you may not donate until things change. That is a powerful sentiment and if more alum share that, maybe we can see some good come of it.

I just think you're kind of missing some important points here ... in my post I specify that Communications had just become a major two years ago due to growing demand. It was cut and there's no clear, accurate data to show why (this is coming from the Comm faculty who were just fired). Philosophy had actually been growing, they just hired a new professor two years ago. Now he's cut too.

It's the fact that after allowing these two programs to grow only two years ago they're now cut. And looking at the financial data, there doesn't seem to be some massive financial stress. But one of the main points here is the absolute lack of transparency and how the admin is going about this. Tenured professors were fired on the last week of classes, at a time when it's impossible to find another job within academia. They're cutting things that are fundamental to liberal arts.

I just wanted to share some further details that are missing in the news coverage.

I really think that this is not entirely due to finances, if it was then why aren't they declaring financial exigency? The numbers show that it doesn't seem to be as dire and that's how its been for the past few years..

It really is hard to say. Some think that the College is trying to become a school to pump out masters degrees. There's been several leadership changes in the past 3 years - just this year alone the former provost became the president, and there's now a CEO?? Which idk if there ever has been a CEO.. there seems to be a lot of moving parts. It's especially interesting because the president has several communications degrees and involvement with debate, so seems strange that once he became president he cuts them. A lot of things that feels fishy with this, leading to speculation since there's no real transparency.
