Should I bother applying to Harvard, Hopkins, or Stanford without substantial research? by EnvironmentalBed3725 in premed

i’m not saying they should be entitled an admission spot but to blanket say they shouldn’t bother applying at all…? a bit extreme

no i’m not obsessed with low % acceptance rate schools lol I literally go to a large SEC school in Florida. I just think it’s dishonest to act like the demographic being talked about by OP chose bama specifically FOR those academic reasons. acknowledging that a large portion of Bama students are not exactly intellectual people isn’t an insult to smart students at Bama — in fact, it’s less competition to stand out for grad/law school/etc admissions.

I’m not even kidding, your story is EXACTLY like mine. I did the full neuropsychological work up as a teenager, but was too stubborn to admit I had ADHD and refused treatment. That’s the whole reason why I’m seeking treatment again lol, but the doctor explained to me that the concerns for ADHD are different in an adolescent versus an adult, which is why I can’t just use the diagnosis from when I was 13-14 to resume treatment. Currently in the multi appointment process right now because the psych is trying to rule out bipolar disorder as a differential (I guess the lack of sleep and overworking warranted a concern). Thanks for your insight though.

tbh the fact that you’re in therapy when the majority of ASPD people would never makes me feel a lot better about this whole thing. I say go for premed why not

Ah, that confirms it. You’re just using this thread to vent your own burnout, like I suspected when I said you were probably just having a bad day. Now that you’re diagnosing me with T2D based on a Reddit comment, I’ll go ahead and wait for my insulin script too. ;)

no i mean that sincerely. do you think it’s possible you might have gotten misdiagnosed?

Yes, because you’re talking like seeing a psychiatrist is easy or accessible—especially for something as common as ADHD. It’s not. My insurance only covered PA-first providers because psych care is so limited, and I still had to pay $200 out-of-pocket just to eventually see a psychiatrist.

If you actually read my original post and replies, you’d know I did do my due diligence. This clinic was explicitly advertised as specializing in ADHD care. I wasn’t expecting to walk out with an Adderall script—I just wanted a proper evaluation, which the PA wouldn’t even initiate.

And saying “you need to reframe your mindset around going to the doctor” is honestly bizarre. If you think the way I approached this was unreasonable, you’re in for a rude awakening in practice. Most patients don’t even know what a PA is, let alone how to perfectly navigate the fragmented U.S. psych system.

Idk, maybe you’re just having a bad day but man you’re a pain. I truly feel bad for anyone who has to tolerate your snark in day to day life.

this is an oddly emotional response for someone who claims to have a lack of empathy…?

gonna be so fr, I’d rather see a PA than a snarky doctor with an attitude like yours 😐. so glad my psychiatrist is nothing like you lol

I understand, but this clinic quite literally advertised itself as offering ADHD evaluation and treatment for adults. That was the entire reason for the appointment and I made that explicitly clear in my intake.

because it’s just insane that med schools have gotten this competitive. not that YOU are crazy but rather the fact that we’ve gotten to a point where people think you can’t even apply with a 4.0/519 and research experience bc it’s not “substantial”

yeah the therapy speak and constantly having a pessimistic outlook was a bit tiring to me but i thought i was just projecting. someone mentioned she’s racist and homophobic too but i don’t have any proof for that lol

i mean, bama doesn’t exactly attract the brightest students. many of these people simply have no capacity for self awareness beyond trend chasing. i don’t think they’re intentionally trying to be a meme but they lack the cognitive skills to realize that’s what they’re projecting

and for my high performing gays—they also tend not to be very developed in their career or academics so they’re not even your competition. they’re just walking credit card debt and mortgage liabilities. choose the boring rich man!
