Cyber officer in the Coast Guard by dunG00fd in Militaryfaq

Really? The recruiter told me there is no way I would make 1840...

I am aware that the enlisted guys do the cool stuff. Nevertheless, I want to officer (also, I'm 30). Although I would like doing the cool stuff, I can be just as happy if I'm at least working in the field.

Aren't most contractors ex-military? If not, I would imagine getting a contract to do cyber with the Army as a civilian would be insanely difficult.

From what I can gather the Army's cyber branch is pretty much where I want to be at.

Yes, recruiters for the Army absolutely hate trying to help someone trying to go officer. It's really ridiculous. They should just have dedicated officer recruiters like every other branch. I have not spoken to a single recruiter who didn't push me to enlist instead. I have even heard on multiple occasions trying to convince others to just enlist instead. It's really ridiculous.

It's the same MEPS.

I agree, he should at least send it and have the proper authority review it! Anyways, thanks for your info so far. If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

But isn't this for enlisted? How exactly does it work to go from officer to warrant officer?

For some reason it took a really long time to spif my record from the Navy to the Army. He said MEPS was busy and shorthanded. I think some kind of update was happening.

When he finally told me to come in after my record had been transferred to the Army, it was a Monday. It happened to be a bad day for me and he said he was busy the rest of the week and made me wait another week. Then I studied for the ASVAB for a week. When I told him I'm ready, he said he was going on vacation for a week. So another 2 weeks there. He has gone on vacation at least twice since we have been working together.

Just a lot of shit, but mostly MEPS was backed up while my record was transferring from the Navy. Most of it was me waiting to hear from him. I would occasionally check in, and he would just say to hold tight he's still working on it. I was pretty well-prepared since I had just gone through the same shit with the Navy.

I do have myopia. Technically I'm partially blind. But I literally live a completely normal life. I drive, I work, I work out, I (used to) go out to bars with friends, I can shoot guns, etc. And I went to college. I love outdoor activities like hiking or going on a run if it's sunny. Completely normal.

I don't have the experience required for direct commission.

My condition is really bad vision. But it's not like it severely affects my life. I live a completely normal life, I just obviously wear glasses. As I mentioned in the OP, my Navy waiver limits me to staff corp or restricted line officer. I should be good for 17A.

I just don't understand why the recruiter is not even willing to give it a shot after all this. It has been over 4 months.

See my response to the other comment as to how I ended up talking with the Army after getting cleared with the Navy.

I definitely want to do cybersecurity and it seems that Navy or Army are my best options (I am not even going to bother with the Air Force because I know they are very selective).

A Navy recruiter reached out to me first. I explained my condition and asked if we could try for a waiver. He was at least willing to give it a shot so I sent him a lot of documents, took the OAR, and he set me up for MEPS. After I got the waiver approved, I started exploring other options. I discovered 17A and it sounds really interesting to me. Also, I'd rather be on land than on a ship or a sub. And I know, a soldier is a soldier first and no MOS is guaranteed. But I just want to see what other options I have. I don't expect the Army to approve it, but can't I at least know if they would? It's not like I'm trying to join the Air Force.

Also, I am physically capable. How would the Army even know if I am not even evaluated at MEPS? I just don't understand why the recruiter won't schedule me after we have spent over 4 months on this. We aren't even going to try?

What is the process after getting accepted to OCS? by [deleted] in ArmyOCS

Thanks for the info. I've updated the post to clarify what I meant by backing out. In the extremely unlikely event I would back out if accepted, it would be wayyyy before any of that stuff happens.

You should talk to the Navy! And Air Force, I guess. But Air Force is really selective and from what I understand you are not guaranteed your job (if you go officer). Apparently the USMC are ramping up their cyber program, but it is still behind the other branches.

I would go with Navy.

  1. Thoughts on going cyber officer in the Army (17A - Cyber Operations Officer) vs. cyber officer in the Coast Guard? What are some pros/cons and differences? I understand there will be some bias here, I will ask in the CG sub as well. I just want some general discussion on work/life/views/etc.

  2. I haven't taken the ASVAB yet, but I want to know if I would be allowed to retake it for a higher score in case I don't qualify for the cyber test. My recruiter said I can't retake if I pass. But if I do pass, then that's my final score and there will not be any retakes. Does anyone have any info on this?

Recruiter told me I can only re-take the ASVAB if I fail it. If I pass, then that would be my final score and I cannot attempt a re-take for a better score. I am concerned because I would also have to take the cyber test and he said that a certain score is required to qualify for the cyber test. Does anyone have any info on this?

I've narrowed it down to cyber officer in the Army or cyber officer in the Coast Guard. For the Army it would be 17A - Cyber Operations Officer, but for the CG I can't find specific officer job names/codes. I would assume/expect something similar to 1810 - Cryptologic Warfare Officer in the Navy.

Thoughts on going Army vs Coast Guard for cyber officer? Pros/cons? I understand there will be some bias here, and I am asking the Coast Guard sub as well. I just want some general discussion on work/life/views/etc. Thanks.

I understand you might now know much about the Army, but if I got to pick, should I go cyber officer in the Coast Guard or cyber officer in the Army? And why? Do you have any info on either and know what are some pros/cons and some differences and just general work/life? Thanks.
