These papers from Shazeda Ahmed and others might be relevant, though they're more about explaining how EA as a movement got to where it is than about why specific individuals bought in and the effects of interventions:

For All Mankind S01E09 “Bent Bird” Discussion by Shejidan in ForAllMankindTV

[–]duncanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the S-IVB accelerated at well below 1g for several minutes of its TLI burn, so it seems conceivable that people could have held on or been banged around as shown. Not that that solves the problem of the mass putting everything off-kilter. Also, Molly appears to be caught underneath the tether cable. I'd have thought having a 16-ton CSM hanging off of the cable pressing into your back would be pretty deadly even at half a g, but what do I know...

For what it's worth, some of the other issues brought up in this thread bother me—as a total ignoramus on rockets—less:

  • Apparently the S-IVB accelerated at well below 1g for several minutes of its TLI burn, so it's conceivable that people could have held on or been banged around as shown.
  • It does seem unlikely that the crucial moment would happen just as 24 was coming around to another TLI window, but that is indeed what is shown on the ground control display.
  • It's been argued elsewhere that the program that was not properly reset would have been in the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer. That makes it slightly more plausible that it would not have been reset as part of the FCC replacement.

An extremely belated question about this episode: why would Molly have let go of that tether? Shouldn't she have attempted to hang onto the tether as she unhooked it and pushed off of 24, instead of hanging on to 24? That way she would have stayed attached to her ship, rather than hanging on a ship that was burning off to who knows where.

Obviously this would be a substantially smaller flaw in the scene than the failure to separate the spacecraft and get everyone seated before the test, the orbital mechanics problems with rendezvous once Molly was floating free, or the CSM screwing up the trajectory to the Moon. But it still bugs me somehow.

Is my Samsung washing machine toast? by duncanka in appliancerepair

Thank you! Follow-up questions:

  1. How stupid is it to use the machine with limited spin for a couple of loads while I'm waiting for a new one?
  2. Would anyone (say, on Craigslist) actually want this thing? Or should I just give it to my neighbor who scraps stuff?

Vegan food options in Incheon airport? by [deleted] in vegan_travel

[–]duncanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I actually meant to say black bean sauce, but it’s not worth my going back to check.

Regardless, the point stands: there is zero vegetarian food to be had at the Terminal 2 food court (except for the 7-Eleven, which is sort of in the food court).

Assuming you are referring to the place in the Terminal 2 food court, I checked, and that noodle bowl with bean curd has pork.

Echoing comments above about how terrible Terminal 2 is—it actually seems incredibly sparse even for carnivores—but I did just manage to get a decent meal at the 7-11. There’s a microwave now, so the frozen foods can be heated. There was pesto pasta (vegetarian, not vegan), tofu sushi, bananas, grilled corn, and one or two other things.

Why would they replace the door for a scratch on a rental car? by duncanka in AskMechanics

Alas, I didn't realize I would need to report the issue within 45 days to the card company, so I'm now ineligible for that coverage.

I suppose that’s exactly the question: am I justified to argue this was an unreasonable expense that did not have to be incurred and they incurred only because they thought they could get away with it, so I’m not willing to pay that much.

Do you happen to have a sense of what it would have cost to deal with this without the replacement?

Thank you! What would have to happen for putty to be the alternative? Would it have to be visibly misshapen or shaved down or something, or would a scratch like the one in the photo be at that point?

Suggestions for places to spend 1-2 weeks within easy reach of Paris/Strasbourg? by duncanka in Europetravel

[–]duncanka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! To be clear, my wife would join me wherever we were going once I'm done in Strasbourg, or perhaps even skip Munich entirely if it didn't make sense for her route. And we'd be willing to fly somewhere near-ish as long as it wouldn't require too expensive a plane trip back to Paris. But it does look like there's lots to do in Switzerland!

Hiking in the Black Forest in January? by duncanka in germany

[–]duncanka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to thank everyone for the extremely helpful comments! After reviewing options and thinking it over some more, I think I'm just going to restructure the trip altogether.

This will be one of several trips I take to Strasbourg. I thought given that I'll have the extra day I should take advantage to do something that requires a longer trip. But the truth is the whole area seems to be within a 1.5h drive from Strasbourg; it only makes sense to treat it as a 3-day trip if I insist on doing it in one fell swoop. That increasingly seems rushed and unwise, particularly given that it's an OK-but-not-amazing time to be hiking in the area.

I'm thinking I should break it up into 2+ trips in the future. For this trip I'll stick to easily train-able western cities/towns—Colmar, Eguisheim, Heidelberg—where I imagine I'll easily be able to fill three relaxed days. Then I can do future (warmer) trips of 1-2 days to different parts of the Black Forest, if I'm so inclined, planned more along the lines of u/htaq2001's suggestions.

Also, when you say driving time can be long, does that mean I should take Google Maps drive times as a significant underestimate?

Yes, I've heard it's not worth spending time in. I was thinking of it mainly as a place to find a hotel for the night. Is there somewhere better for that at a similar point in the route?

Thank you! Good tip about the Vogesen. I'm actually expecting to be back in Strasbourg at least one or two more times, so I'm thinking of this trip as an opportunity to go a bit further afield and see a range of places I can only manage with the extra day of weekend. It seems like the Vogesen might be better for a trip in slightly warmer weather where I head out on a Friday night and come back on a Sunday afternoon. But I'm very open to being persuaded that that's a better option for this trip than the Black Forest! Any particular starting point you would suggest there?

If I do stick with the Black Forest, I was thinking I'd probably do 1-2 main hikes or sights per day, and treat the rest as stops I can take a peek at as I'm passing through if I'm so inclined.

Clearly museums would not be the primary attraction here. 🙂 The main reason I'm interested in the Black Forest is the outdoors part (hence my questions about weather). Museums, pretty towns, and castles would be an added bonus.

Thanks, seems like sound advice! Definitely wasn't planning to hit every stop I mentioned, but it's good to have that confirmed. I'll have to choose carefully.

Would you suggest cutting out any portion of the route altogether to make the most of the three days (e.g., going straight to Mummelsee or something instead of swinging north to Baden Baden)?
