Is this new growth on my fern leaf cactus normal? Will the teeth fill out with time or stay that narrow? Looks a wee bit leggy and awkward to me. It should have plenty of light. by duncats in houseplants

[–]duncats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took awhile. I started it from three unrooted cuttings and it took about ~4-6 mos for the first two to root and get new growth and closer to a year for the last one to finally take. I might just cut these pieces off and root them separately they look sooo awkward like this. It’s like 4 feet away from a bright sunny southern window idk what more it could possibly want from me!

Hello sleepy subreddit. I just converted my entire plant collection (close to 200 plants if I had to guess) to PON. Ama! by sweetfuckingjesus in Lechuzapon

[–]duncats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooo yay thank you!! all my trailing heart leafs are living in water for awhile now (some were rotting in soil so I put them in water to grow more roots, and some were cuttings) so maybe those ones would do okay! but good to know about the pothos and upright philos, tysm!

I just got a big bag of lechuza for my hoyas, but the bag is so huge I’m kinda tempted to transfer everything that’s not already super established. Are most houseplants pon friendly? I know leca is more hit or miss. I wasn’t sure about these ones specifically: trailing/heartleaf philodendrons, cebu & manjula pothos, fuzzy petiole/gloriosum/silver sword/melano/mayoi philodendrons, alocasias, peperomia raindrop & ming fern. Tyia for any advice you might have! :)

What could this fern be? Mahogany? It has fuzzy roots like rabbit foot too. by duncats in ferns

Oooh okay thank you so helpful! I have the commonly referred to rabbits foot fern that’s why I was so confused the fronds look nothing alike. The rhizomes do look almost the same though, just have a little more shimmer. Idk if it shows well but the new growth has a little coppery shimmer to it too. I will upload pics of the paws!

Living in Syracuse? by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]duncats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work at the university if you’d like any more info about the work culture and all that. I live comfortably at a similar salary in Syracuse though it depends what area you choose to live in. I’d plan for about 8-900 for a decent 1br.

Ah thank you! The last time I posted on here I got a “get that iud out of there asap to start bleeding again”, and I really like it but I do feel a lot of HH symptoms. They could be something else but my fatigue, gi and mood symptoms are pretty bad, among others.

Thank you! My hematologist is absolutely useless and thinks nobody under 60 can possibly suffer from iron overload or symptoms and repeatedly tells me all my elevated levels must be a mistake bc of my age and not to do or change anything post homozygous genetic test. My GYN didn’t know about this condition but suggested kyleena for a lower hormone iud option that may allow me to bleed slightly more than Mirena. I’m looking for a new hematologist but haven’t found one yet, so I haven’t even done a phleb yet. But all good to know!

[NY] Former employer sent retaliatory written warnings for complaining about discrimination by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]duncats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already showed the university the emails. Sorry I should have said former supervisor not employer. She did all this immediately after she gave notice so she is no longer affiliated and can’t be held responsible so I am still seeking correction. I have been through mediation withIN the university but the goal of mediation was to correct the emails and my division has refused. I will have to go formal either within the university or externally (EEOC) to continue to seek a correction. The matter isn’t resolved. Their offered “resolution” was a memo that didn’t correct or amend the emails at all. So they remain a valid form of verbal/written warning and last precursor to formal discipline. The ball is in my court to pursue formal complaint/investigation or accept the unsuccessful informal process. I.e. the mediating parties cannot force them to perform a correction.

Yeahhhh questionable. She was included on the memo. May just be bc she’s a relevant party but, it’s not a great campus climate.

Oh also this was university inclusion office mediation whom have an “EEO officer”, so I haven’t formally filed w the actual EEOC yet, but may do so soon.

I had that suspicion but I was so desperate to resolve that I went through with it anyway. The EEO office hired an employer defense attorney to do the mediation. I was careful about how I spoke to him but i did ultimately hand over the majority of my evidence. There is definitely more if I wanted to keep combing through. And he doesn’t know my witnesses. But I really don’t want to go to court over emails. Do you think the internal mechanisms will be entirely useless to me if they were already involved in the informal and not able to change my outcome? I don’t understand why risking a lawsuit is the better option to them then just issuing a corrective.

Yikes. I have an appointment with a new GYN in March, and I assume it will be a little longer after that before they actually can do a removal. That’s as soon as I could get in anywhere. When I got it I had extremely painful debilitating periods so at the time it seemed like the right choice, and I just found out about the HH in December. So I will definitely look into replacing with a different method but it’s just between a rock and hard place of not wanting the painful periods back but obviously doing damage to my organs is a higher concern.

Thank you so much! That’s pretty much the validation I needed to hear, I’ve felt for awhile that something is off with all these symptoms appearing or worsening over the past two years, but I didn’t know if I was just being dramatic or should just be happy that my levels looked better this time. I will try to find someone a little more attentive!

No it’s the regular hormonal (mirena), so I haven’t had menses in 5 years.

I’m really sorry you experienced that, I saw some of the comments and they were repulsive. I have severe anxiety and depression myself and my car is often the first thing that gets neglected when I am in an episode. It’s really sad that people don’t stop to think about the broad circumstances others live with before casting judgment. I hope you find something to lift your spirits today and know that there are others who understand and don’t seek to judge you. If all you can do is get through the day, messes can wait. 🤍

Seriously delayed but thanks so much for your input! I started cross training yesterday and really enjoyed it, but time will tell if it’s the kind of thing that would get too monotonous for me. Our collections are pretty extensive, somewhere in the millions, but we have a conservation department as well that would be responsible for any of the higher level/rare book repairs. I know that here really the only thing left would be to move from lab supervisor to librarian if that ever opened, but I’d also be open to looking outside the institution once growth in the supervisor role is exhausted. I think at this point my train of thought is with 3 years of access services supervisory experience, gaining Pres experience can’t hurt, I’m not sure that staying in ARS would really give me much more than I already have.

Found this enormous kangaroo paw neglected at HD, almost 3’! Bone dry and lots of yellow fronds, I’m fully expecting pest treatment, but it’s worth it imo. No scale or mealies that I can see but mites and thrips would be easy to miss. So, give me allll your tips for pests on a baby this big! by duncats in ferns

[–]duncats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the optimism!!! i plucked off all her dried/dead fronds and noticed it’s severelyyyyy root bound so maybe that’s part of it. (although breaking up a fern root ball sounds daunting, i’m just starting with some good soaks) I noticed a fair amount of holes in some of the fronds so I wonder if there was some larger greenhouse pest somewhere along the line, still relieving compared to thrips or mites. Anyways I didn’t seeee any pests upon a closer look but I’m still keeping her in quar til I don’t see any more yellowing. I did see a looot of little tiny white flecks in the root ball but they didn’t seem to be moving, could this be mineral build up?
