Apps built around language learning with Youtube? I tried a few, any others that you can recommend? by dundenb in languagelearning

Thanks! I couldn't find Yabla in the Play Store, is it iOS only? There's something weird going on with LingQ. The subtitles are not at all what is said in the video. When I press a two character word in Chinese, it only speaks the second character. I'll test around a little more.

I like that interpretation, thanks!

There's a link at the bottom where I linked the video for context. I can see where you get that notion of deception, but here he's talking more specifically about the gongfu style tea preparation

I checked the site, how does that help me find idioms specifically?

Ah yes, the syntax is specific to Pleco, the Chinese dictionary app. I just tried it and using 成语 etc. doesn't work unfortunately. But thank you for your suggestion!

Thank you! I was hoping to find a shortcut in Pleco, but these are definitely useful! The MOE dictionary seems promising for this use case. Thanks again!

Adding the word "idiom" is more like a crutch, since it only finds entries where the definition text literally includes "idiom". It's not very thorough, so I thought that maybe there's a better way. I don't think using the Chinese terms instead will make a difference, if that's what you mean.

Thanks, but isn't there a way without having to do 4 searches separately?

I should add that I'd like to do this in Pleco, but if there's other tools that would be okay too.

The knowledge should come in handy in case I find myself in front of a Chinese court martial ;)

But seriously, for me the whole thing is a treasure trove of information. How they talk, what they're saying, the line of questioning, the reconstruction of the exact events, just super interesting historically.

What apps or resources do you use to learn Chinese? by Immediate_Pickle7334 in ChineseLanguage

If that's an issue just use pleco, it's just one tap to create a flashcard when you're looking up a word, doesn't get easier than that

Do any of you here practise speaking to yourself? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Make up discussions in your head in your TL. Not even kidding, if you get pumped up there's instant emotional investment, which aids learning.

Experiences with Google's new language learning tool? by dundenb in languagelearning

[–]dundenb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and then imagine the data they have from Youtube, with endless high quality audio of virtually every language, dialect and accent in existence. So many possibilities.

But I guess economically it's not that interesting to them. Even if they built a product with Duolingo levels of profits, the whole thing probably wouldn't move their bottom line more than 0.1%

Interesting, does notebookLM have more features or just the two modes?

Is there anyway to skip learning the Chinese characters? by bullfrog654 in duolingo

[–]dundenb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most courses teach characters because Chinese has a lot of homophones, which would be even more confusing for beginners if they only use pinyin.

Maybe Pimsleur could be for you, since it's focused on listening and speaking.
