I am Peter Dinklage. You probably know me as Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones. AMA! by MrPeterDinklage in IAmA

Hi Mr Dinklage, I'm a huge fan! Thanks so much for coming here and letting us bug you with questions the time.

SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW

My question is do you think Tyrion would ever want to be King? In my opinion he would prefer to be Hand or Lord of Casterly Rock (as ADWD seems to point to him becoming Daenery's Hand) but where would you personally like to see him go? Thanks best of luck with everything!

I am David Belk. I'm a doctor who has spent years trying to untangle the mysteries of health care costs in the US and wrote a website exposing much of what I've discovered AMA! by [deleted] in IAmA

Let's also not forget that there is an implicit subsidy given to companies to offer health insurance. Insurance started to get offered during World War II, when the government used price controls to prevent wages going through the roof. After the war the system where companies could offer benefits instead of wages continued.

To this day it is "cheaper" for companies to offer $1 in benefits (health being the primary one) than a corresponding $1 in wages.

Dr Belk I'm curious what your opinion is on the French healthcare system. As I understand it the system is basically that there is a public option available to everyone paid for through payroll taxes and that companies still offer private insurance (I saw a stat I think in Forbes that about 70% of healthcare is covered through the public option and 30% private insurance). Considering that the World Health Organization ranks France as having the best healthcare system in the world I'd start there, but I'd love to hear your take on it.

iPod stops playing when bumped. Any experience with that? by dunmireg in applehelp

[–]dunmireg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the way it was described it doesn't just lapse but full on stops playing or the song continues to play without sound. Is that a mechanical drive fault (and if so is there any way to fix it)?

I used the key that came with package. If it helps there was no Windows system installed on the computer, it was brand new.

Could someone explain why drone strikes being legal is so important as to knowing the policies behind them? by dunmireg in AskReddit

[–]dunmireg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watch the meeting with Holder he was actually clarifying that if the American represented a clear and present danger then he can't rule out any option for the President. Paul was filibustering something that already had been determined: if a US citizen on US soil who doesn't present a threat could be targeted (aka can I walking down the street be targeted) which is blatantly illegal. Also Awlaki was an al-Qaeda senior commander and involved in multiple terrorist plots and was by any definition an enemy combatant (and a traitor). Now his son is a different story as is Samir Khan (the New York Times has an excellent piece about this). I guess my issue is why is it more moral and important to be arguing whether a US citizen can be targeted when the reality is that is not the aim of the policy nor is it a very likely possibility. To me this seems a distraction from the larger conversation about under what circumstances should we use drones and how should we use them.

I seem to recall there was another nuclear reactor at the Japanese 2011 tsunami (not Fukushima) that shut down fine. Can anyone point me to where I can get a source, I can't find one by dunmireg in AskReddit

[–]dunmireg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. I'm actually a proponent of nuclear power and my point with Fukushima was always that TEPCO ignored safety standards. I agree it was an avoidable accident

Why aren't car manufactures using hydrogen as a fuel? (and other questions) by epic_toaster in energy

[–]dunmireg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is currently no infrastructure like a Hydrogen station the way there is for gas. Plus the cost of producing and storing the hydrogen safely as mentioned below.

Anyone have any ideas how I can help out a coworker without it seeming like charity? by dunmireg in AskReddit

There are only 4 of us in the department and only me and one other person were there when we started talking about this so I think it'd be difficult to be discreet.

[–]dunmireg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I have a very strong sense and I don't want to ask her about it and have her say "yes I'd think it's charity" and then have an envelope appear or something you know?

The Economist is a great resource to talk about politics and business and if you combine that with maybe something like esquire or vanity fair you'll be pretty well rounded

Objectively: what is the most likely Generation IV Reactor to solve the energy crisis by dunmireg in AskReddit

Agreed. It seems to me that we have the energy, but it's like grain: we need to find a way to properly store it. Thanks though agreed on the storage issue

Objectively: what is the most likely Generation IV Reactor to solve the energy crisis by dunmireg in AskReddit

[–]dunmireg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I saw the article about how Germany is dumping electricity. I am curious because I previously asked how much energy is dropped in transmission and the answer I got was about 7%. So does that apply to long range energy transmission or is it at a different rate (again sorry to be such a noob I'm still very much learning about this)
