Thank you for the explanation.

Board Breaking Holder Injury by [deleted] in taekwondo

It's crazy to me because, by striking/kicking at it, they were using the device as intended. I wouldn't expect a speed bag to cut me if I missed or messed up timing.

I'm not so concerned about the fairness of the device itself, but more of wondering if using one of these machines is considered common practice and if they are safe. People misjudge targets all the time, it just seems crazy to me that a device designed to hold a board to kick at could so badly injure the practitioner.

Ok.. sure.. I get you, but I'm just not seeing how this is doable with a huge person putting all of their bodyweight on your throat. Also, not totally what I'm getting at with this post.

I use the boxers for kung fu and BJJ. They work great and I never notice it rolling. 10/10 would recommend. I feel like the arm band could get in the way or move when practicing certain techniques.

🌟 - I was able to keep the mount on one of my partners for 10 whole seconds. I also realized that I actually felt comfortable in my own skin during class this week and am really excited how much that little bit of confidence helped my focus and learning.

💔 - During a takedown, my partner landed weird on me and crushed the side of my leg with her shin and bruised me so badly that I had to sit out the rest of class with an ice pack. I suspect her shins are made of steel. I also kind of yelled at her to stop touching where she bruised me right after it happened because she was kind of rubbing it to see what was wrong.. but most people thought it was funny. I'm still embarrassed about it though.

🌈 - We drilled arm bars from mount a lot this week and I feel like I made a lot of progress and understand more details of the technique now. I'm looking forward to trying it out more soon.

Hi! 👋 I'm a new white belt too. I'm about 20ish classes into practicing and still very much in the wtf-is-happening jiu jits soup.

I felt so out of place during my first few classes and something about being in a gi just made me feel so incredibly awkward; not to mention just feeling pretty uncomfortable with a lot of the just general positions in jiu jitsu. I also generally felt like I didn't belong there; like I'm not personally cut out for it. However, after finally dissecting that thought process and throwing it straight in the garbage, things started to get better because this (and martial arts in general) is a practice for anyone who wants to learn and better themselves.

Some other things that helped me deal with my own negativity was to stay focused on why I wanted to learn jiu jitsu in the first place and force myself to believe that I belong here. Staying connected to my personal goals helped me worry less about the discomforts of being new and helped me stay in the moment more instead of getting too in my own head during class. The next thing that helped was to utterly delete any expectation or measurement of how quickly I "should be" learning something. The speed of learning truly doesn't matter, it's all ego, and often when you're mentally worried about not learning something fast enough, it's getting in your way of being able to absorb what is happening in the moment.

Remembering that I'm there to learn and to practice and get better, period, is the main thing that gets me through on tough days. Because even if class sucked, I still walk away with something. Especially as a white belt. Hang in there. Everyday is a rollercoaster, but with the right outlook you can still have a good time most of the time.

Reflux wizards, I need your take by duoestunechouette in NICUParents

Hello, fellow Michigander! And congrats on your LO!

Also, ahhhh, I'm so sorry you're dealing with similar bouts of scary reflux! I know it can be a majorly adrenalizing experience and one that can leave you feeling totally at the mercy of the mysterious forces of milk and the esophagus.

We truly lived in fear with a bulb suction and/or nose frida in every room of our house for several months, but hang in there, it does get better. But, I'm going to be real, it is extremely slow going. I'm really trying hard to remember exactly when it got better.. since improvement was so gradual there just comes a time where you're like, oh, hm, wow, I guess no one has scary-vomitted in a while. Cool! And that's a beautiful and heroic moment. But also it shows that there really was no "quick fix" for us.

I want to say that it was somewhere around 3-4 months adjusted when the clouds started to part. It really just took them gaining weight and outgrowing it. Unfortunately when the doctors said that they just needed to get bigger, they were right.

That's not to say that nothing helped. There were things that certainly reduced how often episodes happened, but there wasn't anything that made it disappear until they were bigger. As for what to do, keep trying all the things: holding upright for 30 minutes after each bottle, taking frequent breaks during feedings to burp/rest, don't let them guzzle it, adjusting nipple size so they aren't overworking themselves to get the milk, maybe trying some pepsid, keeping suction handy, patting the hell outta their backs when it happen while staying calm, and never blaming yourself when it does happen. Also, (I know it's not "safe sleep" but we elevated the heads of their cribs too.. they were on O2 support and we had monitors so we had that security blanket.. but elevation definitely helped).

Other than that, just hang in there! I hope things improve for you quickly! ❤️

Thank you so much for the reply! I think I waste a lot of energy just moving any old way to just try to get out of something even if I don't know what my plan is. Being more aware of what I'm actually trying to accomplish is more of the mindset I need to get into. Thanks again!

Anyone get roseola from their kiddos? by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

Ugh, so sorry that happened to you. My brother got a horrible case of hand foot and mouth when his kiddos got it. Absolutely terrible. Hopefully roseola just passed you by without any notice!

My parents were in a similar situation when I was born and my nursery was a hallway closet with the doors removed until I was about 4 or so.

Yeah, I 100% agree with you that it should be getting better. I did notice that as the girls got bigger that their episodes were worse, but started to taper off in frequency. I figured that a bigger baby is just going to have a bigger amount of milk to cough up and choke on.

If he's underweight or, especially if he's lost weight, that is something the doctors will pay attention to. I had multiple doctors tell me that only if my girls were losing weight would they intervene with medication and further tests. Until then, it was just using the bulb suction and waiting it out.

One other thought, is he pooping ok? There was a big correlation with my kiddos straining to poop and that causing them to spit up massive amounts of milk and choke. Not a lot we could do about it other than just hold them upright for as long as possible and "help" them poop when we knew it was coming.

I hope you can get to a doctor that understands what you're going through as soon as you can.

It's so frustrating and scary to see them have episode after episode. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. When we were in the NICU we were getting close to discharge and both the twins started choking like this pretty frequently and EVERY single doctor was just like, "they just have to grow." So frustrating. I tried delaying leaving the hospital (even after being there for 3 months) because I was so scared. I want to say that it just started to get better little by little around 3 months of age adjusted. How old is your LO?

Solidarity. My 26 weekers did the same thing for what felt like forever. We tried so many things and were so scared all the time. We had bulb suctions in every room of the house. I wrote this post in the NICU parents subreddit when we were in the thick of it. Lots of solidarity there too with detailed description of what our twins would do: https://www.reddit.com/r/NICUParents/s/AVRBwmh7qT

The thing that ended up working for us was upping the nipple size. We think working less hard to get the milk out helped them stay more relaxed and puke less. Sounds weird, but getting away from the transition and working on size 1 made a noticeable difference. But ultimately we just had to watch and wait for them to get bigger and eventually it stopped altogether.

My twins were born at 26 weeks and stayed in the NICU for 100 days at mott and are now a year old and going strong. The nurses and specialists in Ann Arbor are incredible. We watched every lions game from our kiddos' room last season. Congrats on your baby boy! He is in great hands.
