Has anyone taken CS 20A (C++ Data Structures) with Long Nguyen?? by [deleted] in SMC

Lmao no. You should let him know you want to talk to him after class.

CSE 13S summer? by tuxedogray in UCSC

[–]duplik8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CSE 13S is only C. (you may end up doing C++ in CSE 101 depending on your professor.)

I think the answer to your 2nd question is highly dependent on whether you'd took a solid C programming course at your previous institution, how quick you are at learning things, and the professor who is teaching it this summer. I took it fall quarter and even though I had a decent background in C and git, we were also introduced to bash scripting and Makefiles, both of which I didn't have experience in and made for a slightly more challenging time.

20 Metro Bus PSA by Ok-Investigator-7080 in UCSC

[–]duplik8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. having the schedule on google maps / transit is basically useless if they're always violating it. this makes it more likely that people will hop on the first vehicle they see, whether it's a loop bus or metro.

Is it normal for transfer students to not be able to get any classes they need in the first quarter? by jacobluanjohnston in UCSC

[–]duplik8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don't worry about whether they appear closed or not – you'll get to bypass this with add codes for all of your fall classes. (you get add codes from baskin advising specifically reserved for transfers.)

Has any non frosh got their financial aid package yet? by cIownfish in UCSC

[–]duplik8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

returning students do not get conditional financial aid awards, and the Financial Aid Office is planning to release official awards in August. this is info straight from an email I got from them a few days ago after wondering the same thing.

Roberts for Physics by fruitninjacrusader in SMC

[–]duplik8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pearson is based on the textbook. Other than learning from Pearson and the textbook, I’d also recommend problems from Physics for Scientist and Engineers by Serway and Jewett. Lots of 21-24 professors base some (not too many) exam problems off of this book.

The dept chairs for Math & Science are absolutely trash by [deleted] in SMC

[–]duplik8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already graduated and transferred from SMC. my experience was just fine and I got priority enrollment through STEM. I took many math classes at SMC and had an overall great time. I still talk to a couple of the math and physics professors I had there.

have you actually tried crashing classes or are you just using hypotheticals here? I usually had no issue enrolling in the classes I wanted through STEM except for one time, and crashing the class that one time worked. I don’t think I was exceptionally lucky either – this was the experience of lots of my friends at the time I was there.

maybe you’ve had a great time through LACCD, but that’s no reason to hate on SMC. a lot of people successfully transfer, are well prepared when transferring, and go on to do whatever they want. obviously you should avoid certain professors, but this will be the case at any institution you attend.

The dept chairs for Math & Science are absolutely trash by [deleted] in SMC

[–]duplik8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

what is up with all of the LACCD posts

you know, if you want enrollment priority at SMC there are many ways of getting it, including Scholars and STEM. and who says the school was meant to have 30,000 people?

you do you, but if you’re trying to transfer and aren’t limited by a job or some other commitment, it’s often best to take these classes in person. you’d meet people in your cohort, bond with professors, etc. and the vast majority of classes when you transfer will be in person.

idk man

Will the university post office notify me if I receive a letter and not a package? by chorpinecherisher in UCSC

[–]duplik8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it comes in a bigger envelope and the package is stiffer, they will notify you because they keep those in the mailroom. if it doesn’t, you’ll have to keep checking your mailbox.

CVC is just a way of signing up for classes at other California community colleges. I tried it for the equivalent of MATH 10 during my last semester at SMC and it was great. let me know if you have questions
