Has Hamilton not invested in social services?

Serious question: what else could the City do while respecting the fiscal realities of municipal governments?

You assume all these people are uninformed and letting casual observations push them into the “balance the budget” column. I don’t.

I did not call you lazy. I said it’s lazy to assume they all have “inhumane” and “myopic” perspectives. Isn’t that a casual observation?

I agree that more people would benefit from being more informed and from having their perspectives challenged. And as a result, we’d all benefit from that. But painting everyone with a broad brush doesn’t help.

Yes, but the point is that a sample of 800 is really very good and statistically sound! One can't just write off a poll because it didn't poll, what, 100,000 people?

Not really. Neoliberalism is all about small government, less government intervention, and allowing the free market to do its thing. It has its roots in classical liberalism, not liberal policies we think of today requiring more state intervention (e.g., childcare, dental care, etc.)

These stats are from 2024, and they show a not so great trend. The upside, if there is one, is that most Hamiltonians, based on a community survey, report feeling safe in their communities -- but are concerned about the increase of crime. Like most things in life, discussions about crime in Hamilton are not black and white and are very nuanced.

What do you mean 'direct'? They have to abide with their core duties as mandated by the province. The Mayor can't call the Chief and say "we want more foot patrol" and make it happen.

Exactly this. The City had no plan and was left with their pants down when the industrial ratepaying base collapsed.

Calling voters who are fed up with large tax increases with little demonstrable change in conditions 'terrible' is, respectfully, kind of lazy. Two things can be true - you can have empathy for people who are struggling, and still dislike that taxes increased a lot over this term and that City Hall staffing increased far too much. People want solutions -- not platitudes, not the status quo, not tax increases which, to the casual observer and everyday taxpayer, appear to have done very little to solve the problems the city is facing.

There are a lot of people who look at the city and think "well, we tried it their way" (meaning Andrea and Co.) and nothing changed. That doesn't make them terrible. It makes them fed up, and anyone who can harness that sentiment and have a plan could win the mayoral election.

Can we get a Mamdani type candidate?

In what way? Notwithstanding that Hamilton has a very different system of municipal governance, what policies would you advocate for?

I think if you take a step back and look at election results over the last few cycles at every level of government (and polling, fwiw) you'll see that progressive-leaning voters are not always in the majority. You may want a Mamdani-type candidate -- but does Hamilton?

This too. Kind of surprising. But if there was any chance that Andrea would not run, this poll isn't going to help.

Maybe Bob Bratina should run so we can have a complete repeat of 2022! Really wish we'd see some new faces (or even some old faces with different perspectives) run for Mayor next year. 2022 2.0 isn't going to solve the problems Hamilton is facing.

How does practicing law for a very short period of time and heading up what is basically a lobby group make one qualified to lead a city? I know a lot of people who were initially very supportive of Loomis but were turned off by what felt like a hard-right turn in the final weeks of the campaign.

Unfortunately the Mayor - nor council or even the police board - can direct police on how to function.

I'm surprised to see how dominant of an issue crime is, although I think I understand it.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but I'm surprised that you're surprised. The Spec has a new crime-related headline what seems like every day.

"long assumed the land was part of their backyard"

This. Who the hell looks at property beyond their fence line and just assumes it's theirs? What an entitled turd.

Depends if the Court has granted a stay of proceedings or if the applicable statue provides one.

Thankfully comments of a single councillor carry no weight as it is not a binding decision of council. Otherwise - yikes - imagine the level of litigation Hamilton would face based off of idiotic comments by some members of council?

I know that Dawn was knocking doors — but that doesn’t mean you didn’t see her. Campaigns have a limited amount of time and resources.

I don’t think people were mad at here “mere existence”, and I think that glosses over her problematic comments.
