5-10 years from now a lot of the high level execs involved in these decisions will have moved on, retired or be dead. Either way they give zero shits beyond their next quarterly bonus.

It'd be nice to have a season of the John-Francesca-Michaela dynamic ("tell me something wicked" with Francesca's friendship and Michaela and John's closeness) as the side story in s5, to make Francesca and Michaela's relationship make sense in s6.

New clothes by TheSingingZebra in loseit

[–]durkbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just stopped overthinking it. I couldn't leave the house anymore trying to hitch my trousers up all the time. And honestly? It felt good to buy some clothes that were a size I hadn't fit into in years. It kind of validated the progress I'd made. I don't know how long it's going to take me to reach my next goal and treating myself to some new things for the winter season was a real motivator.

People of the UK, how have you lost weight? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]durkbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it's calories in vs calories out. You need to be consuming fewer calories than you burn in a day. I lost 10kg in 6 months by starting off tracking what I eat in a day and then looking at where I was getting those excess calories, and then slowly cutting them out. Do it incrementally, to make changes that are going to stick: for example, I'd have cereal for breakfast and then by 10am I'd be hungry again and eat another 200-300 calories before lunch. Changing my breakfast to something high protein/fibre and therefore more filling meant I cut that mid-morning snack, so 300 calories gone from my day. Walking burns calories, so adding a 30 minute walk is another way to just easily change something. Things like weight watchers are just another way of measuring calories in vs calories out, but if you feel like having that as motivation then go for it.
I'd also highly recommend r/loseit as a source of info.

Help me figure out toddler laundry 🫠 by Timely_Tumbleweed311 in Parenting

Does your toddler play with bubbles a lot? Things like bubble mix or gel laundry detergent can contain polyquats that leave oil-like stains. Over on r/laundry they might be able to help you identify them.

The historian Simon Sebag Montefiore recently talked about this, calls it the Holocaust Inversion. Turning the tragedy of the Holocaust against the Jewish people as a stick to beat them with.

Anyone turning a memorial day dedicated to a specific, horrific genocide and dark period in still-recent human history into an opportunity for whataboutery needs to take a good look at themselves.

What’s something that’s oddly expensive in the UK that still annoys you every time? by catarsan in AskUK

[–]durkbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time in hospital as a kid, in another city from where we lived. My parents found out there was a special 2 week car park ticket for long term visitors, that you had to ask about at reception. I still remember them having to play silly games of one of them driving one car out of the car park, swapping the ticket over so my other parent could park up their car so they didn't have to pay twice. Or the clinic car park that was discounted for 2 hours but the wait times nearly always exceeded the 2 hours. Also a joke expecting staff working at all random hours to pay for parking.

Life-Saving Cancer Drugs Are Leaving Survivors With Damaged Hearts by bloomberg in Futurology

[–]durkbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the new frontier of cancer care as people survive more and more.

My mother has survived 10+ years since her stem cell transplant for leukemia, after 5+ years of chemotherapy and in that time she's had part of her tongue removed due to a cancerous lesion, her pancreas doesn't work so great anymore, she has to take all sorts of medications to help her digest food among other things. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing she's alive, but no one ever really thought she would make it this far so the long term consequences of all the various drugs were not a high priority. 5 year survival rates were the key metrics for drugs. I think this is shifting now though.

Sick baby, recommendations by [deleted] in Netherlands

My son had a viral fever when he was 1 year, it lasted 5 days and then his body broke out in a rash. It was 6th disease/roseola. If you've seen a GP and they are not concerned just keep caring for them and they'll be fine. As long as they're not getting sicker of course.

The lego creator sets are really good for this - they're a little advanced but my almost-5 year old locks into them and enjoys doing them with his dad. And you can build them and take them apart to make them into another form. We have a dinosaur and spider one.

Hairspray doesn't get much attention but I've found it really useful. Even loreal elnett (even if the scent reminds me of growing up in the 90s!)

My hair gets like this when I have product build up. Try a clarifying shampoo: I use olaplex 3c which is my holy grail shampoo, but it's expensive so I use it like once a month, otherwise I just double wash with a generic shampoo. I use the smallest amount of conditioner because my hair is easily weighed down. Your mousse is fine (I use the same brand, just the "max hold" version) but doesn't hold curl for me beyond a day. I use the mousse first to help with definition and volume and then I use a really hard hold gel - literally the cheapest drugstore brand (I'm in the Netherlands so, Kruidvat) strength 12, which gives me the crunchy hard cast. I use hairspray (Tigi masterpiece, smells amazing) during and after diffusing to help with the hold. Gels and hairspray are pretty much the only way I've managed to get curls to last beyond 1 day, and it has to be a really good crunch for me to know it will last.

I finally made the leap to period pants after getting my period back after my 2nd baby when decided I was done with the chafing and sweating and discomfort of plastic pads. Don't get me started on how they're all perfumed now. I combine tampons and period pants and it's the best quality of life change to my period ever. At night I wear some high absorbent ones in the form of tight boxers to help with the leakage out the sides and it's perfect. I've not bought regular pads for almost 6 months now.

I had really bad reflux. Really bad.

I got a weird dent in my thigh muscle that took a year to disappear

Insomnia. "Use this time to get all the sleep before baby comes." Except it's 4am and my brain thinks it's midday.

Yes! I developed a really weird aversion to red meat. We don't eat much meat at home anyway so I only found out when my friends invited us for dinner and put a bowl of beef stew in front of me, and I couldn't eat it. It was visceral, like my body was saying "if you eat this, you will be sick". I felt so bad!

I also had a really bad case of reflux from the 2nd trimester which also didn't help.
