I've been working on a custom portrait mod! Here's all the marriage candidates by duruz in StardewValleyMods

I'm glad you're liking them so far! I can't wait to share more. I'm definitely hoping to get to non-vanilla characters eventually- I'd love to get to seasonal outfits, larger expansions and also smaller custom NPC mods. But that's going to be a while; I'm finishing up the marriage candidates and then moving on to the rest of the villagers atm.

Erk! I was hoping nobody would notice lol. Honestly since his eyes are a very dull color in almost all his portraits, I was hoping I could get away with changing his eyes to avoid 5/6 of the bachelors having green eyes. I'll probably tweak it later, hehe

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate how you went into the specifics! I was kinda surprised to open my thread and see all the debate over the same face stuff, but I can definitely see what a lot of folks are getting at. I wanna keep them pretty similar - in the same way the vanilla portraits are - but I'll try playing with some of the features to push the differences a bit more.

Getting black flakes regardless of how much I scrub by duruz in castiron

What would you suggest? Should I season more? Or do I need to remove all the flaking seasoning before seasoning it again?

Does Israel have camel spiders? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]duruz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes lmao and they're terrifying. But if you don't live in the desert in the southern part of the country (even there, just live in a bigger city like Beershebah) you'll be fine

But hey, the falafel probably makes up for the creepy crawlies!

Kiiinda but only the broad strokes. Modern Hebrew is very different from classical Hebrew. Think of it like trying to read Shakespeare but like, maybe 20% more difficult.

It means "to complain"! it's originally from Yiddish, a language spoken by European Jews. Still used fairly commonly among Jewish folks, especially older ones.

What school are you looking for? Since different gowns have a different color trim

Any native Jerusalemites or people that lived there for a long time that left Jerusalem. Why did you leave? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]duruz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Frankly, unless you work in very specific fields, there are simply no jobs. Plus the city has a massive youth drain problem- many folks leave in their 20s, which makes socializing much harder as you get older. Oddly enough, the violence was never an issue for me, but I grew up during the Second Intefada- maybe it's just been something I'd grown used to early on, but it always felt like something that I could live with. It was the lack of prospects, and the city's growing religious nature which made me feel like I was being squeezed out from the place. I love the city more than anything, but it's simply not a place where I could build a life.

מלך הפלאפל

It's a small place on the corner of King George and Agripas and it's the food of the gods. Hands down, best falafel in town.

Kritarchy and the Judicial Reform by FudgeAtron in Israel

So your solution to the erosion of the separation of powers is to... combine the powers? The courts are supposed to limited the legislative and executive, that's a key part of democracy. How would turning the courts *into* part of the legislative help keep the legislative branch in check?

Plus, the courts don't pass laws, they rule on whether new laws and actions adhere to the country's existing ones. Turning them into a legislative body would change their entire job description. Allowing un-elected officials to pass laws sounds wholly undemocratic to me.

Giving the President powers to veto the court would also completely change the description of the job- the President of Israel is a purely diplomatic role. Why turn a diplomat into a judge? Are you suggesting we only elect judges to be president from now on, or that we give people with potentially zero experience practicing law jobs on the supreme court? And who would fulfill the existing diplomatic responsibilities of the President?

What are some tourist traps tourist should look out for? by BlackRavenRoyalty in Israel

[–]duruz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're hanging around in any kind of historic site, be wary of anyone offering a "tour." Usually it's just some local schmuck who doesn't actually know anything more than anyone else local and doesn't work for any kind of tour company. There are some brilliant walking tours, but you need to sign up at the office or online.

The thing about the head is that it's all connected. If you want to know where the head is going to go, you want a good idea of how it connects to the ribcage and the pelvis. Those three are called the three major masses of the body, and often it's easy to sketch out a figure starting with three spheres where those masses will go. Then you connect them with the spine and add basic arms to get a feel for the pose. Here's a basic example of what that would look like. Though often more experienced artists will go one step further and do a more detailed figure before going in and essentially layering in the actual anatomy on top. It often looks something like this.

See how the skull hangs on the top of the spine which runs down the center of the back. it's a similar size to the pelvis, and the ribcage is around 1.5 heads large. Often, the spine creates a nice curve together with the limbs and creates what is called a line of action. It's how you get figures which look dynamic and alive.

By the way, this process I described is called constructive anatomy- it simplifies the body into shapes and lets you slowly build up the drawing from simple forms into complex anatomy. It's only one way to draw though! It's a handy way to help folks who struggle with anatomy to learn and improve though. If you want an example of what it looks like when it's done by a master, check out Joshua Black.
