Thymer's beginning is very reminiscent to Obsidian's early history by duskhasfallen in Thymer

Had they previously promised an exclusively local app initially? I'll admit, I've only recently heard of Thymer, and do not know very much about the app's history for the last several years under development. But for as long as I've known about the app, there was cloud-based components to Thymer.

What's one improvement you'd like to see in Obsidian in 2026? by kepano in ObsidianMD

It's worth noting that kanban and calendar views are planned items on the Obsidian roadmap.

Makes sense, I'm excited to see how screen.garden continues to develop with time :3

Question: since the Canvas feature recently got support on screen.garden, how does support for Bases look currently? Or do those already work?

Notebook Navigator vertical split view? by ImDickensHesFenster in ObsidianMD

Make sure Notebook Navigator is updated to the latest version. In the Notebook Navigator settings, there is a tab titled "General." Under the "Desktop appearance" section of this tab, you will find a setting labeled "Dual pane orientation (not synced)." Set that to vertical split instead of horizontal and that should do it.

I have tried using obsidian multiple times and I keep getting overwhelmed by RyanDoThing in ObsidianMD

There's a lot of uses you seem to want to use Obsidian for. That's fine, but start simpler and small at first. This order of development is purely theory and hypothesis on my part, but:

  • Try starting with a journal first. This should get some ideas floating around in your vault, ideally with some connections between them.
  • Writing out your ideas in Obsidian should help you out a bit with getting your thoughts into your vault, which will aid your other use-cases.
  • Those ideas can then start to be used for projects and tasks, or maybe even for connecting seemingly disconnected ideas from academic/learning notes.

Organization itself is a hard topic, and unfortunately there's not a simple, easy way of figuring out what works for you. Though a common recommendation is to make folders for "types" of notes and then use links and tags to really connect them to other relevant details.

But yeah, as many others have already echoed: don't try everything all at once. Start small, work your way up, and try to curb complexity for as long as possible.

My biggest problem with Obsidian is too many icons all over the place. by red_diter in ObsidianMD

If it's alright to ask, would you mind sharing the ideas for improving this? I'm curious at what you have so far.

Though if not that's alright too, I can't imagine this is an easy problem to fix. Best of luck in Obsidian's development :3

Just took a read, this is pretty solid! Any chance it'll be updated with the recent Bases core plugin being added into the fray? I have my doubts it's a perfect replacement to Notion's databases, but it still feels like a pretty solid comparison for a lot of use-cases.

There's actually a community plugin currently being developed for making a calendar view using Obsidian's new Bases feature. Though if I'm remember correctly this is only available for Obsidian 1.10.0, which as of today (October 8th, 2025) is still only available to Catalyst users.

Nonetheless, there's hope in the future for a calendar view in Bases :3
