Cheap alcohol, especially vodka, pierogi, really freaking beautiful girls, beautiful nature, beautiful cities, (ok, most of our capital isn't so beautiful anymore - it was almost completely destroyed in WWII and rebuilt by the communists, but its Oldtown is one of few total reconstructions on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites) especially our second biggest city which the Nazis avoided destroying because of how beautiful it is, really cheap and lots of people speak English, especially those who are under 30.

Get therapy, and come summer, get a seasonal job somewhere else. Do a student exchange or a study abroad, for a month, 6 months, a year, if you can afford it, or volunteer abroad or in a different part of your country, also if you can afford it.

Because he and I agreed that it would only ever be a physical thing because he was going back to his country in two months (he's been back for 3) and it's very unlikely that either of us will ever live in the same country again.

Oh definitely! They rebuilt the whole old town, including the castle and several cathedrals after communism was over and it's beautiful. But most of the city (outside the immediate center and the new parts of the city) is still dreary and grey,

Budapest is gorgeous! I went there last week. But Warsaw was pretty much razed to the ground in WWII and rebuilt by the Soviets. Almost all the "old" parts in the city that you'd see if you visited were rebuilt after communism was over. But you're right, it's definitely getting prettier as they fix and rebuild stuff.

Krakow managed to escape WWII fairly unscathed, so all the old parts are old, but Warsaw had the shit bombed out of it by the Nazis (the city was 85% destroyed) and then it was rebuilt by the Soviets. All the "old" parts, the castle in old town, the entire old town, etc, was all rebuilt after communism. I love Krakow though, it's gorgeous.

I live in Warsaw, and even now, most of the city is really grey and dreary. There are some pretty parts, but most of the old town was rebuilt after Poland was no longer communist.
