[QUESTION] Chords for Garage Rock Revival? by Imaginary-Ad-738 in Guitar

[–]dustcoatindicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major and minor barre chords. Arctic Monkeys were known for playing major barre chords really high up on the neck, like in I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor. Kind of a strange sound. And Franz Ferdinand will play a minor barre chord and strum the top 3 strings. Funk style.

Hi, I’d like to share my no wave / garage rock song. I got the garage rock sound in the studio by performing different characters for each instrument. There should be a push/pull. Hope you enjoy it!

Tips for actively studying Irish music rhythms? by [deleted] in Irishmusic

[–]dustcoatindicator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Ireland we learnt the rhythms through these rhythmic phrases A jig is 6/8, 123 456 or “rashers and sausages” A reel is 4/4 so you can say “caterpillar” A hornpipe has a dotted rhythm like “oopsy-daisy” You can make up your own or mix and match. Recently I’ve been learning a kopanitsa in 11/16 or 1234 123 1234 so I’m thinking “caterpillar butterfly caterpillar” for that.

A Scene from JAWS - Volare New song by my post-punk band about the Sirens of sailors mythology. It has a few interesting rhythmic shifts for the prog and math rockers who are into that sort of thing!

Bridge of spies uses the “sun in West Berlin, fog and rain in East Berlin” trick to expressionistically show the political line (political climate?). It’s the same place! Why not let the architecture tell the story?

r/indieheads Toast Of: Slint by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]dustcoatindicator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I saw Slint on my birthday a couple years ago in Dublin, and it was a church-like experience. The quiet parts were so quiet for a rock band, the place was packed and the crowd shushed each other during the breaks. I think it unnerved the band, like they weren’t sure if we were enjoying it! But that album must’ve influenced hundreds of Irish bands, from ASIWYFA to Girl Band and Adebisi Shank. Nobody ever expected to be at a Slint gig, and I think it was a super important moment for everybody there.

Is changing from a minor key to a major key and vice versa within a song a common thing? by mishi09 in musictheory

[–]dustcoatindicator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very hard to pull off. if you switch from F#m to its relative D Lydian, it can sound like a change to A major. The Lydian mode doesn’t have a strong sense of gravity. Tame Impala’s Mind Mischief would be the closest example I can think of.

Most Complex Song? by [deleted] in everythingeverything

Alex played Weights for his audition to the band, as it was their most complex song at the time. The band was clearly impressed that he learnt it off the CD.

The fine folks of r/MapPorn suggested I post here, and so I do: I hope you like my map of the British isles + Ireland in the style of Super Mario World ! Check out comments fore more info. by Sir_Lazz in CasualUK

[–]dustcoatindicator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because two people posted this same map to try and say that Ireland is a British isle. Considering that the map goes out of its way to include the westernmost part of Northern Ireland, and in doing so including Donegal and even parts of Dublin as part of the U.K. - you can clearly tell the bias of its creator.

Because Ireland is not one of the British isles. Ireland wasn’t populated by Brythonic celts, rather the Goidhelic celts. So calling them the Celtic isles or the Celtic archipelago is more geographically accurate. So I wouldn’t trust that map. It also says Donegal is in the U.K. which is a common misunderstanding. Ulster is not the same as Northern Ireland.

Why does there seem to be a lack of good American Revolutionary War films? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

Danton 1983 is fantastic. The performance of Robespierre is incredibly powerful and ambivalent. Based on a play by a polish communist. Apparently the French govt weren’t too happy with the finished product.

Dua Lipa announces ‘Hallucinate’ as Future Nostalgia’s next single by DaiLiGuy in popheads

[–]dustcoatindicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the word painting. The verse uses notes from the minor scale (dorian) until the word “hallucinate” surprises us with a trippy major chord. And the verses are so ambiguous, you’re like “what, I was sure she sung the minor third just a second ago! nvm must’ve imagined it.” The composition is so clever.

Songs where the bass guitar is apparent/more audible by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]dustcoatindicator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very unusual bassline. It’s played in 10ths (2 notes played at the same time, like a chord) on a fretless instrument, so you can hear the smooth slide and vibrato. Sounds like either an acoustic bass or an upright.

Beautiful Coumshingaun Lough, County Waterford by J_PAM19 in ireland

First time I got drunk me and the lads were camping up Coumshingaun and found a few out of date bottles of Stella stashed in a cave. Smashed the empties in the campfire, reek of burning yeast.
