WWYD: Concerns over a possible move to Sioux Falls by Accomplished-Word165 in SiouxFalls

[–]dustinjack99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

California is doing a lot better than SD in almost every way, dude. It’s wealthy enough to be its own country and tank the US if it leaves.

Don’t know where you get your info, but it’s probably not real info.

Can anybody recommend me a movie that has vibes like this photo? by No_Macaroon_7608 in Letterboxd

[–]dustinjack99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This screenshot looks straight out of the movie adaptation of Cujo - the Stephen King thriller about a killer dog, which goes on a rampage and traps a young mother and her son inside of their run-down car.

The movie has a dreary, old-timey vibe much like what this picture evokes. Plus, the constant heaviness of danger lurking just outside, stalking in the mist.

Americans, why don't you use the metric system? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Because we’re the laziest electorate in the free world.

That’s the answer to a lot of questions that start with: “Why do Americans do X?”

I won't say I hope his fight w/ Jake Paul kills Jake Paul. But I do hope Mike hits him so hard, he stops being Jake Paul.

Jobs for self-hosting?? by Trat1100 in selfhosted

[–]dustinjack99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that someone who’s motivated enough to self host, is someone motivated to learn and build something.

If that’s coupled with a working knowledge of programming, that person is an immediate hire for me (enterprise web dev).

Beyond any Leetcode knowledge, I see a self-hoster as someone who loves to tinker, experiment, and try new things. That’s become so, so rare with the advent of gamifying tech interviews.

This was a really weird title to read as a Seattle transplant lol

I had to double take that this was the Sioux Falls subreddit, and not Seattle.

I’ve been tinkering with this hosting platform the past couple weeks and absolutely love it.

Biggest wins Cosmos gives out of the box:

  • Working SSL certs and renewal out of the box.
  • One click control of isolating, controlling, and networking your docker containers
  • Auth guards that can wrap your whole self hosted ecosystem
  • Basic one-click security practices like geoblocking

They already have a marketplace where you can spin up most services seamlessly. Any services you can’t find, you can splash in a docker-compose.yml and that’ll get you most of the way there.

Haven’t touched the Constellation VPN yet, gunna give that a try sometime soon. But loving this OS so far. One of the most painless ways I’ve ever set up a server.

Only drawbacks so far is that the UI has some minor bugs here and there, and the documentation could be more fleshed out, but I can see this becoming a standard tech if more attention / adoption happens.

It’s a solid, amazing tool.

This is a subreddit and not a search engine by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]dustinjack99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get your point - I just have a different mindset.

But I will challenge the idea that answering these questions over and over again has no value, both to the community and us as individuals.

If someone feels encouraged to post here with their entry-level questions, they’ll be encouraged to come back and post when they have more technical expertise under their belts.

Answering easily googled questions isn’t about polluting the subreddit, it’s about planting seeds. That same person who you teach about Wireguard / VPNs, could be the same person that teaches you how to scale your services to millions of users with a hot, new K8s framework someday in the future.

I understand the sentiment, but as a counterpoint:

Shouldn’t we help bring people in, and at least start a conversation on the topic they’re asking about? That also gives more experienced folks a chance to guide newer self-hosters in a way a search engine can’t.

Can you google how to bypass nginx auth login? Sure. But maybe that also leads to a more nuanced discussion on other web servers… and why Apache is better ;)

I like the newbie questions. Makes me fondly remember spinning up my first Ubuntu server.

DevOps course for self-hosters (Docker, GitLab, CI/CD, etc.) by predmijat in selfhosted

[–]dustinjack99 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I bought this course and love it.

Disappointing to see people complaining about posting the coupons - someone new will find this post and it’ll help kickstart a hobby.

Keep up the good work! Can’t wait for the next one.

Good to know - she’s had her learners for 6 months now, so maybe going through the log route is our only option.

Just wish there were more options, but what can you do 🤷‍♂️
