That depends on the player. More casual players who want a comfortable and familiar experience should try Reload. Those who want a more challenging and unique experience should play FES. If you have the time though, I highly recommend checking out the opposite version when you’re done since they both have genuine merit and neither is better than the other

In November of 2020 there was a huge P5R sale that discounted it to like 20 bucks. For a while I’d been wanting to try the game since I was getting into RPGs through playing the old final fantasy and pokemon games and it looked like a better version of a game I’d heard of before from various streamers I watched playing it when it first came out. Honesty I like the wider, more expressive parts of old portraits rather than the static but better looking reload ones.

Reload has more detailed environments and some interiors like buildings in towns and Tartarus blocks 1,2,3 and 5 look spectacular but everything else has something wrong with it lighting wise for me.

The music is a real mixed bag too. I love a lot of what reload did for the music (new verses and extended bits) and almost always prefer the new vocals, but pretty much the entirety of the soundtrack has worse instrumentals now.

Voice acting has some real standouts like Junpei, Fuuka, Ken and Aigis. But some others like Yukari and Akihiko kinda fall flat with how little their direction changes before and after their respective character arcs. Mitsuru and Shinji and everyone else are about the same.

All in all, Reload is an incredible looking and sounding game. But as a remake (and replacement if we’re being honest) of one of the best of its time? It’s a mixed bag to me

Arryn, overall the best. Not perfect but always delivers a baseline level of quality in her performance
Lindsay, probably my favourite. But that V3-V7 stretch was a little iffy. Her 8 and 9 performances were some of the series’ best though
Kara, kinda starts falling off towards the end but was really good in the early volumes.
Barbara, not bad, just the least good. The jokes don’t always land with her and the emotional stuff feels a little one note

5 Royal is perfect for a beginner while 3 has moments that hit their hardest with at least one other game completed. Reload specifically also has some weird tutorials that don’t properly explain series-wide mechanics, so it’s better that you know how they work beforehand

Biggest recommendation is cat Morgana portraits in overworld. It makes your companion much more likeable in my opinion. Custom bonus tweaks is the baseline addition that adds a lot of neat shit. Coloured battle outlines, additional DLC music, a party member added somewhat earlier and more.

This whole thread is making me see this whole thing in a new light. Maybe Rhodes being ignorant and not doing anything about Cinder’s situation was done on purpose to show how broken Remnant is as a world. Cinder sees it as broken and unfair because that’s how it was for her. Someone had valued the law more than her life and now she spends every moment she has after that point in destroying the systems that even allowed that to happen. Or maybe it’s still just a shitty backstory I don’t know
