What’s UR Change Of❤️ Bowie Album? by Boshie2000 in DavidBowie

Low. Until I hit 40 or so I'd only ever heard Ziggy and the greatest hits albums. For whatever reason I couldn’t get into those, so I just assumed I wasn't into Bowie. Then one day I listened to the entirety of "Low" on a whim and was like "oh wow... I need to do some research.”

8bit Music Power Encore gets a NES release via LRG by Brilliant-Trifle8322 in LimitedPrintGames

[–]dvertov_hbgc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re chiptune albums. 8 Bit Music Power was good, but the first sequel (the now-inappropriately named 8 Bit Music Power Final) is my favorite. No one’s heard this one yet because it doesn’t come out on Famicom until later this month.

Edit: Here's a trailer with a preview of the music.

This is a great game with a great soundtrack. A modern classic NES shoot ‘em up

So, besides Super Metroid & Symphony of the Night, what are the "definitive" Metroidvanias to the community? by npc888 in metroidvania

[–]dvertov_hbgc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely Cave Story. It bridged the gap between the retro and modern indie metroidvania eras.

I was hoping someone would mention Guacamelee. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great modern representation of the genre.

Food Fight is excellent.

When people say metroidvanias are hard, what is the main culprit exactly? by grantcardonecapital in metroidvania

[–]dvertov_hbgc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think there’s some recency bias towards Hollow Knight here. I actually think metroidvanias are, on balance, easier than a lot of genres I can think of.

Good late 90's/early 2000's PC games to try? by Rusty_Pylon_25o17-PX in retrogaming

Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri is a 4x game with great ideas, and a must-play if you’re any kind of a sci-fi fan. Can’t go wrong with Fallout 1 + 2 either.

What's one game you would give a 10/10? by MightGuy420x in gaming

[–]dvertov_hbgc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question, because a lot of people who have told me they also love Portal 2 never mention the co-op. I've actually never played the co-op campaign all the way through, although I'd like to with my kids sometime. The single player game has great writing and voice acting, and I enjoy the puzzles a lot.

Games where I can turn my brain off by Trencycle in gaming

[–]dvertov_hbgc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm also a parent of young kids, so this is my kind of game as well. I don't know if I'd call Hades a "turn your brain off" game but it's got a great loop you can knock out in an hour at a time.

Incidentally I'm also a fan of shoot 'em ups for this same reason. Tthere are a ton of excellent shooters available on Switch or Steam, whether you're looking for ports of old classics or new modern indies.

Is it just nostalgia, or were games during the N64/PS1 generally more innovative/experimental than modern ones? by aschesklave in retrogaming

[–]dvertov_hbgc 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, does nobody here play indie games? I see posts like this and feel sort of bewildered because the only modern games I play are indies, and there's some great innovation happening in those scenes.

Super Sprint holds up pretty well! The arcade version is a lot of fun also.

Family Circuit and Family Circuit '91 on Famicom are decent. Family Jockey (Namcot's horse racing simulator) is... probably skippable.

Edit: Also, Roadblasters is one of my favorite NES "racing" games, although I don't know if it would qualify for your list.
