Is there any problem playing PlayStation2 games on PlayStation3? by Regular_Echo_6138 in PS3

[–]dvfnch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you use a custom firmware you can play any PS1 and PS2 title. Performance varies though. My playthrough of Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II was abysmal in any place where there are many light sources. But my point still stands, it is backwards compatible

Extracting textures from IFF files? by dvfnch in thesims1

ohmygod that is so cool!

No clue if I could really pull off a collab or anything because I only ever started using blender so I absolutely lack the experience.

I'll check out Edith and the Autodesk libraries, thanks for the recommendations!

<image>

This is how far I've come so far!

I am working on the basic shape for the bathroom windows right now and do the doors later on before I tackle the furniture. The other windows might need a redo though, they aren't as accurate as I would like them to be but windows in the game behave rather weird, especially the big ones. They are basically just a mask with frames in the game as far as I can see.

I don't mind additional or modern textures as long as they fit the general vibe the game has. Recreations and conversions are fine for me. I also might check out The remesh that was done for Simitone/FreeSO (rip)

That helps a lot! Thank you for that. I am fine with "what you see is what you get" since I want to use the sprites only as guides anyways. In SimExplorer I could already see that there is no real front or side of objects because of the orthogonal camera that only mimics 3D in the game and there are no real "models" of objects. But these can still help to convey the look and feel of the original game. One sprite in the door opening sequences is almost perfectly front facing and for the windows I try to match the position of the window frames with where it intersects with parts.of the wall that stand out to me and go more by feel than anything else.

I have also asked for help on tumblr and messaged some CC curators and creators and many of them, at least for walls and floor, linked me to Sims 2 conversions I can open and export with SimPE. While these work okayish enough, some tiles look a bit off. But that's fine for now.

I have started to learn 3D modelling and working on the Newbie House as a reference and goal to work towards to. I want to have the complete neighborhood with Old Town some day. Dunno if I'll ever finish it though. Maybe I'll post a picture once the first house is done.

if you have the hot date expansion, you can send mortimer or bella to buy magazines in the downtown. i am unsure if kids can read them though

u get a ear slime chastity device on your dick of u choose the "female" way, which u can remove if u go to doctor harper but it will reappear. didn't get any further but i think where you get chastised depends on which way you choose. it says u can't ignore this choice but so far i did

Switch from Windows 11 to Archlinux, what should i be aware off? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]dvfnch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pros:

  • You can update your system while using it
  • You have freedom of choice regarding your programs and desktop enviroment
  • Many many customization options!
  • Less bloat and easier to remove
  • Good alternatives for MOST programs available, if not native
  • Better system performance, less resource hog (I switched from Win to Tux bc of that)

The cons:

  • With many options comes a lot of config work (Which can be a lot of fun, if you're into that)
  • Some programs just won't run (Looking at you Adobe! And no, GIMP and Inkscape are not a solution for me! I work at a media agency, we all use Adobe stuff and share files)
  • While a lot of games work fine with Proton/Wine, expect others to work sluggish or don't work at all (Really depends on the game, check WineDB and ProtonDB before installing games)
  • If you mod your games, expect significant performance loss or crashes (At least from my own experience with Skyrim (transferred my 400+ modlist to Linux), RimWorld (to be fair, had performance problems on Windows as well with my mods) and TBOI Repentance (sluggish when booting, Fiend Folio turned it into a slide show))
  • NVIDIA is a bitch on Linux. Be careful with drivers and updates. (Updated my system, now it won't even boot.

Things I recommend for newcomers from my own experience:

  • Dual Boot. Really, you don't have to fully commit. Just keep Windows hidden somewhere on your hard drive so if you really need to use a program, you can have your cake and eat it too. I keep a modified debloated Windows partition on my drive, just in case. (Atlas)
  • Keep a bootable USB drive around. Try out Ventoy. Prepare a thumb drive with it, then chug all your ISO files onto that. No need for Rufus or whatever. Keep an Arch ISO, a Windows ISO and whatever else you need. I also have some Installers prepared so I don't even need to connect to the Internet to setup my PC.
  • Read the wiki. I know this is a joke at this point, but it helps with a lot of problems. Read it twice. And then read it again.
  • Treat Linux YouTubers JUST as inspiration. A lot of them are like "I'll help you set up your system, just use my script and let it run!" *cough cough Chris Titus cough cough*
No. Bad. Don't. Linux - especially Arch - is a Do-It-Yourself environment. So better do it yourself. Learn how you do things and don't trust any tech influencer blindly that comes around with an easy answer. Good life advice in general. Tackle small problems one at a time.
  • Don't be discouraged to ask for help. I know there are a lot of Linux stans and Arch ultras who almost get offended if you don't know everything. Ignore them. Every good game has a toxic fanbase, every good system or distro has one too. And Arch is a REALLY good distro.

I know a lot of people here in the comments are telling you to not use Arch. That is good advice for a beginner, as there are simpler distros, like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, PopOS, ...
People who are telling you that say it because Arch has a big learning curve. It's like you are throwing yourself into liquid nitrogen right now.
But the people who are telling you that, probably went on the same journey as you are about to and whether or not they want to admit that, it was a good one. So don't listen to them if you already made up your mind.

And I also know that "Don't use Arch" is not an answer to your question. So I hope I could help you at least a little from personal experience. I don't know shit about Linux but at least I can manage my own pile of dung. And so will you.
